Indeed. It's a relay that whitelists who can post to it based on your web-of-trust. In most cases, that is defined as the nostr:npubs you follow + the nostr:npubs they follow.
The one I am running is @npub1utx…50e8's WoT Relay that can be found here: https://github.com/bitvora/wot-relay
This implementation has the advantage that it can aggregate notes from those within your web-of-trust by pulling from the relays they write to. You can also limit the amount of time they will be stored on your relay and exclude certain users' follows from your web-of-trust if you notice that they have been duped into following bots.

I'm into my second cycle, and I'm feeling it. I also feel like there are depths I haven't reached yet, so I think your right.
The only way around a "pay here and there for the services you use" is some centralized option that all users pay into, regardless of what client or relays they use or don't use, unless I am grossly misinterpreting what you are talking about. The reason you have to "pay here and there" is because the protocol is ACTUALLY decentralized, so there is no single entity providing all of the services to you. God forbid that ever changes and there is one entity through which all monetization flows.
@npub10pe…n34f is actively supporting Nostr development. We could definitely stand to have more similar non-profits that support Nostr devs. However, grants are not a sustainable way to keep Nostr going.
The way non-Nostr apps generally make money is via advertising. Most around here want to avoid that model like the plague because, while easy to make profitable, it creates perverse incentives for developers to harvest user data and make their apps addictive to keep people doom-scrolling. I am very interested to see how @npub17vs…66ne may bring us an advertising model that bucks this trend. We'll see.
Another means of monetizing for client devs is paid subscriptions for premium features. The tough part about this one is, a lot of those "premium" features are often available for free on other clients, so you end up getting undercut by devs willing to provide the same value for free. Nevertheless, there are clients that are trying to make it work, including #Damus and #Primal.
Value-4-Value is really popular here on Nostr, so it shouldn't be surprising to see that there are devs testing out if they can support their work in this way. #Amethyst, for example, displays a donation card at the top of your Notifications each time you install a new version of the app. It also displays the profile pictures of all the folks who contributed to that version of the app. The hope is that users will choose to support the clients they use voluntarily. #Coracle does something similar, very occasionally showing an opportunity to donate to the continued development of the client in the user's main feed.
Any app, Nostr or otherwise, that is on the @npub10r8…t2p8 has the opportunity to receive V4V zaps each time they release a new version of their app.
An interesting method of having ongoing passive income for your client that I have seen a couple of them implement is the option to have a percentage of your zaps go to the client dev as a zap split. Say you regularly zap 21 sats, you can have 10% go to Coracle each time you use that client to zap someone. The user you zapped still receives 21 sats, but you pay an additional 2 sats to Coracle, for a total of 23 plus Lightning fees. You can also adjust this higher if you want to give the dev more support. Obviously, this is barely anything if you aren't a prolific zapper, but it can add up quickly if you zap a lot.
A couple other client devs are building their clients with the ability to have a custom instance, such as #Ditto and #Flotilla. There is an opportunity for monetization there for offering to host that instance for those who don't want to or can't host it themselves, but still want a custom version for their community.
The same could be done by relay devs. They could offer hosting services for their relay implementations, similar to what @npub10np…tl5h has done with relay.tools, for those who want to have their own relay, but don't know how to set one up to host themselves, or don't want to host it on their own device for privacy reasons. They could also provide easy means of exposing a self-hosted relay to clearnet for those who don't own a domain and charge for that service.
Clients could also charge a small amount for a NIP-05 service and the ability to turn it into your Lightning address via Nostr Wallet Connect.
So yes, there are a ton of ideas for monetization out there, and many more I haven't listed, I am sure. Moreover, client devs are not sleeping on them. Many of them have implemented a means of receiving income for their work in some form or another, and some of them are using more than one. Therefore, I think it is a mischaracterization to suggest they aren't taking this challenge head on. Many most certainly are testing out various ideas to monetize their work, including simply trying to build apps that folks would be happy to pay for, or at minimum donate toward.
I am not sure I entirely agree with that, but I see your point. Not everything needs to be motivated by profit to survive. A lot of devs are scratching their own itch with the things they build on Nostr, so they are happy to plug away at it in their spare time, because they get value out of what they build just as much as we do as users.
Also, profits can easily corrupt products, depending on the business model, because they can create bad incentives. I think Primal is an example of this. They clearly want to be profitable, and it has led them to make some choices in how their product works that are distinctly antithetical to the Nostr ethos.
That said, I think the clients and relay implementations that are most polished and user-friendly will likely be built by those highly motivated to be profitable. They just need to be very intentional about finding ways to make a profit that don't skew their incentives. What exactly will properly compensate devs for their work without creating bad incentives around how they iterate on what they are building? That's a really tough nut to crack.
I would love to hear your suggestions in that area, particularly around how client devs ought to monetize, and how relay implementation devs should monetize. Those who run relays can obviously charge for write and/or read access to their relay. Those who host media can do the same for their Blossom server. Heck, @npub1utx…50e8 built Aegis specifically for that purpose. But how client and relay devs get paid for their work is a much harder problem to solve.

If Client A puiblishes a NIP-22 events without a root event tag, then Client B (and perhaps event Client A) won't be able to find it. Schemas can catch this error either in production or in a CI/CD pipeline. It can also detect these issues by fuzz testing events.
I would personally consider that QA, but maybe not?
It's for validating data, in general. A huge percentage of interoperability issues between clients relates to missing tags or missing data within tags.

Amethyst already supports DVM-based algorithms. We just need more good options there.
What @npub1utx…50e8 has built is a relay that allows you to tweak the algorithm it uses to feed you notes. But this only works in clients where you can display notes from a specific relay.
Sounds like Amethyst will need some work under the hood to make that a realistic option, but it's coming. Can't wait to be able to see a feed from my WoT relay, and then switch to Algo relay, then to a private community relay in Amethyst!
Not enough clients support relay-based feeds for it to have a meaningful impact. I LOVE it on Jumble, and @npub1syj…f6wl has wisely made it one of the default relay feed options. I also use it on Coracle, but you have to know how to add a relay-based feed there for it to do you any good.

It makes it very hard for me to say which is more important. Bitcoin still likely edges Nostr out, because it relies on Bitcoin for much of what it could accomplish to even be feasible, but they are neck and neck in my estimation.

i went to a lot of extra steps of work to build an objectively faster library implementation than what he used and i was in the process of building a simple 2 level WoT whitelist for nip-42 based auth access control
what was different that UTXO did was he just made it work without auth
the clients are all very inconsistent in their parsing of the text of the NIP-42 spec and even just three days ago nostrudel broke the auth flow that was previously working with #realy
so, yeah
not allowing people to post who aren't in some distance of the social graph from designated lists of npubs is really simple
making it work with clients, with auth, and making it with an efficient json codec
i did a lot of work to make all that happen
but it helped him at that time during the replyguy fiasco
i literally don't get spam on my wss://mleku.realy.lol because it only listens to my follows and follows of my follows and whoever i mute is blacklisted from publishing events... as clients have finally got a bit more sophisticated, i can see these other shits that are publishing (and some do, some don't) with their bot spam "news" and other nonsense
my solution works better, but i've had no augmentation to my funding so i can defer my fiat mining work to do it better, but my work is better

the reason why progress towards real features has been so shitty is the cargo cult of strfry, and the freedumb of publishing spam to free relays that nobody who actually isn't a spammer wants
it will be very easy to build tools that can be given a moderately long expiring token from one tool and used to activate another tool, mainly for read access but if the device can handle using a standard JWT secret key and sign stuff it can create data that is certified to that identity
it does occur to me that this is something like a revocable scheme for nostr identities that allows you to publish that a key has been updated and/or breached for security reasons
i suspect that even though i like the schnorr stuff that i will probably end up using the JWT cryptography for the alternative HTTP/plaintext data format for nostr events using the ES256 (P256, aka secp256r1) just as a fuck you to the edwards curve nutters - and the odd thing is that these signatures as i have been using them with JWT, produce a 64 byte consistent length, and the public key is also 32 bytes long, in its primary form (the encodings are all crazy shit, but i can ignore that)
making a form of nostr that actually uses standart http JWT crypto would open up the gates to all kinds of apps using the event/subscription model of nostr without needing the retarded bespoke, and mostly ... retarded... protocol design that is based on sockets, sockets are only useful for subscriptions, otherwise it would be a LOT easier to get these low-skill web devs to build nostr clients
that's really my goal here too, to open this wide and make it into something as simple and integrated with HTTP W3C standards that they will just allow it and people will really start to make use of it
the sockets and the cryptography and the badly designed protocol make it of limited interest to normal devs

There's also a cool workflow that @npub1wqf…qsyn dreamt up, as an alternative way to AUTH over HTTP, using NIP-86 and nsec bunkers.

The more I refine my model the more confident I am in this.
1.002046 is my current daily average growth rate calculated over time, refined further from my earlier calculation of 1.00203, this is constant outside of major macro events. Using this daily growth rate starting at a trend line bottom price of $50 in July 1st 2013 and simply shifting the trend line down 10% in March 2020 and down another 72.6% in May 2021 and we have an incredibly strong bottom that is only broken 130 or so days out of the last 4300 days since July 2013. With the price living within 60% of the trendline 53% of the time.
Once people understand that the system is fair even in when you get in, that you'll experience the same rate of growth as those who joined in 2013, there will be no resentment like with housing. Their savings all also grow by about 110% a year if they simply purchase when it's close to the trend and they hodl long term. 😊

I've unfollowed several people lately because of this exact problem. I'm starting to think that WoT needs an ownertrust level similar to PGP. Maybe a config file mapping pubkeys to trust levels:

As the relay owner, I have "ultimate" ownertrust, meaning if I follow someone, they get write access to the relay.
Everyone I follow directly gets "marginal" trust by default.
If someone I don’t know ("untrusted") is followed by three people I marginally trust, they get write access to my relay (which is basically what you’re already doing in Haven and WoT).
It would be nice to have a couple of additional trust levels though:
Full: I trust utxo not to follow spam bots, so whoever utxo follows gets write access to my relay.
Never: I know someone follows bots, but I don’t want to kick them out of my relay, so their follower data isn’t used for trust calculations (positive or negative).
Reports could work the same way for blacklisting:
Anyone I report as the owner is automatically blacklisted.
Anyone reported by someone I marked as fully trustworthy is also blacklisted.
Anyone reported by three people I marginally trust is blacklisted.
If I mark someone as never to be trusted, their reports are discarded.
What do you think? It sounds more complex than it actually is, and it works well for PGP. Shouldn't be too hard to adapt Haven and WoT to read a new file with custom trust levels.

Running a node is easy. Holding your own Bitcoin keys is the critical part.
Running a Nostr relay is worthless the easy way, and I haven’t bothered with an effective way that’s harder. Yet, I hold my own social keys and use Nostr on the backs of others. This is fine until my speech is infringed. Then the hard way is available to me if projection of my voice is important enough.
I thought about it and it's kind of hard because you can't whitelist the client and wallet service in advance. Neither of them use the owner pubkey to communicate

I was talking to a friend about this recently.
The "don't invest more than you can afford to lose" catchphrase is a catch-all statement that basically just means:
Look I know this thing has monetary value and seeing things with monetary value go up and down can motivate you illogically.
So don't invest more than you can afford to lose before:
- You need to evaluate your own reactions and feelings as the value changes over time. Condition yourself to realise the short and long term consequences of your actions without gambling all of your money first.
- You need to evaluate the barriers in your way. How easy is it to deposit funds and how easy is it to get then back out. How long does it take and are there ways to get it out faster. What other risks are there?
- Identify your misunderstandings by practicing. Don't realise that you didn't know what "liquidate" meant after putting all of your life savings into a long trade.
The same applies to Bitcoin. Figure out what you don't know and learn about it. Gain confidence and conviction. Until you are confident that you have that, and you have spent some time practicing that, don't invest more than you are willing to lose into a technology that is new and unfamiliar to you.
TLDR; it is solid advice, but not permanent advice. It's more like "don't invest... until...".

Try holding <tab> at power on to get to the Grub menu. If that works, you can hit <e> to edit your boot settings.
There is a line that starts with 'linux' followed by some options. Add a space and "pci_aspm=off" to the end of that line, then press <F10> or <ctrl>+<X> to boot. If that doesn't help, try again with "pci=noaer"
If you get into the menu, but neither of those help, try going to "advanced options" then selecting an older kernel version or the recovery mode, if you're comfortable on the command line.
This can be caused by a bad upupdate, so if you system boots, go ahead and install any pending updates.

I’m really not concerned about using a custodian for smaller balances that are meant for spending. I am concerned about people getting priced out of self custody of a UTXO at all though. I really hope that is solvable somehow in the future when it becomes a problem.

First, use Handbrake to optimize your videos for the web. Will save folks watching your videos on data usage and save you space wherever you decide to host them.
Next, go get a paid account at nostr.build if you want a convenient solution. Just upload your videos to your account there and copy/paste the URL to your favorite Nostr client when you are composing your note.
If you want a less spendy option that is a bit more complicated to set up, you can run your own hosting service via spinning up a Blossom server. I am partial to the one built into @nprofile…8ykj 's Haven relay, because you get some very handy personal relays along with it, but there are other implementations, too.

- one that used all kind of nodes, wallets and apps from the beginning and knows how to manage them. Not those that were keeping their BTC in MtGox, those are not even Bitcoiners.
- one that studied Bitcoin in details and never was tempted to play around with shitcoins.
- you can still be an OG even after the 2nd halving (pre-LN era). All those joining after LN era, IMHO are NOT OGs.
