Careful with that ncryptsec “login” … nsec encryption is only as strong as WHO YOU GIVE YOUR PASSWORD TO.
As it is … there isn’t a client side library for decrypting without revealing your NSEC to the client.
Indeed, many clients supporting ncryptsec “login”, only need your password once … cause they store your decrypted NSEC on the device.
So there’s that…

Thanks for sharing, Adam. I’m not at all convinced that “bitcoin fixes” human greed for power (over laws) or human desire to be protected and provided for (by these laws). These pathologies are inherent in society, and will be so EVEN IF all humans are “free” to do as they wish “without” (or with less infrastructure for mandating and enforcing) laws.
While more laws are never the answer (to anything), white washing the problems of human nature with a magic orange pill does us no good either.
OK fine.
Freedom money is an easy on-ramp for building out freedom culture. It’s a good start. But there is a LOT more to this equation that Bitcoin cannot address. Let’s explore these also…

Either the Nostr protocol will be adopted (and Nostr “relay data” will be incorporated) into “regular” HTTP web apps, or Nostr will forever be niche. Because this largely depends on how easy it is to integrate Nostr… and Nostr integration is becoming easier and easier… these “hybrid” Nostr apps will only become more and more common.
While this path MAY be inevitable, it MAY ALSO be at the cost of online sovereignty, and what makes Nostr “freedom tech”.
These “black box” hybrid apps (which is how the BIG players will adopt Nostr) will end up using Nostr as little more than a “login protocol” and the actual user data will STILL BE INACCESSIBLE from outside their walled gardens.
While a “universal login” (where actual user accounts are not owned by a single platform and may be accessed across ALL platforms) MAY SEEM attractive to many users and businesses, convenience does NOT equate to sovereignty.
Relays are the backbone of freedom technology. Without a decentralized network (where user data MAY be stored and accessed across ANY number of independently owned servers at the whim of the END USER) freedom tech WILL DIE.

Problem is, it’s NOT OPENSOURCE. This matters MORE than you think.
Because native clients can READ AND STORE YOUR PRIVATE KEY (unlike web clients which leverage a browser extension for key management), having their source code available for audit is ESSENTIAL in keeping these companies honest.

Free market solutions are great… but without valid (and accessible) choices for individuals, there is no free market. As such, a “free market where some places allow and others don’t” really is borderline NOT a free market.
While it’s one thing to say “states should have the right” to legislate … the size of jurisdiction (and one’s ability to immigrate and emigrate and feel represented) REALLY does matter.
If freedom to choose actually matters (as people on all sides of this issue say that it does, for different reasons) maybe divisive issues like this should really be legislated at the municipal level.

I disagree, @npub1n0s…lahe, but I may be blind also.
The way I see, people are used to muting (and reporting) spam from their messaging threads and email inboxes. This feature is well used across many platforms.
The nature of WoT filtering means that each dataset is pulled from a given user’s entire network (of follows follows or whatever) to provide an even richer dataset than the user alone has created. Even if one user is a bit “lazy” in muting or reporting, blacklist spam filtering can still be effective.
Am I missing something?

This is what I’ve been on about for months … WoT filtering (of bots and bad actors) is too much work for clients to handle and unnecessary burden for relays to deliver all the spam. The bulk of WoT filtering NEEDS to be handled “server” side.
The “only” problem with “smart relays” is possible lack of choice and transparency for end users.
Now we have WoT relays … Soon we will have “smarter” WoT algos (as @npub1xts…kk5s and @npub1gcx…nj5z mention bellow) using more than just follows follows. These algos will be accessible to end users (in any client) via relay feeds, custom nip51 list feeds, and via DVMs. In addition, clients and relays themselves will be able to access algo APIs directly, to offer their own white labeled solutions.
I am currently working with @npub1u5n…ldq3 and @npub10np…tl5h on My Grapevine (https://grapevine.my), to spearhead open source development of WoT algos and user centered WoT services.
In the end, we envision an open and accessible market FULL of WoT solutions that end users can choose from (and recommend and share with each other).
But yea, @npub1r0r…q9ac , WoT filters on the relay is still well within the scope of “pure” old skool nostr.

“Webs of Trust” (AKA : a user’s follow network) is an effective and useful tool for relays to use in this filtering process.

- Relays that don’t implement filtering algos are lazy.
- “WoT algos” that ONLY filter for “follows follows” are lazy.
- Relay operators that think “let the clients filter out bots and bad actors” are lazy.
Your argument is lazy simply because you didn’t take the time or effort to clarify. In so doing, you sacrifice the benefit that “follow networks” actually present for relay based filtering.

Went pro while back. UX is awesome, except for lack of volume control. The noise cancelation is nauseating so I never use that. Also … not good mic for phone calls… at least since they were washed. Lol. They came out of wash/dry cycle once with water still in the case. Pried it open to drain and dry with hair dryer for a few hours. That seemed to work. I’ll never pay that much again for ear pods, but so far so good for almost two years.

Prolific following is a common practice on Nostr, as a way to increase the diversity of one’s “algo free” feed.
But the more prolific followers I follow, the more likely it is that one or more of these “follows follows”are gonna be a bot or bad actor … or generally someone I just don’t want in my own feed.
Blocking helps. Reports help. Other stuff helps, but (so far) these WoT relays do not calculate for these to help prune my “follows follows”.
Nostr needs smarter webs of trust, using opensource algos that people can freely choose from.

No, and maybe.
“Censorship resistance” qualifies anyone’s ability to publish anything at anytime, without concern of being “banned”.
“Spam proofing” refers to an END USER’s ability to filter their OWN feed as per their OWN content wishes.
Nostr, as freedom tech, needs to shine in both of these abilities.
MAYBE proof of work solves for spam resistance, but maybe sometimes it doesn’t. There is no silver bullet, and the best (open source and client agnostic) WoT algos will incorporate many user configurable filters in order to accomplish this task.

Yea… this is not spam proof. There ARE prolific followers on Nostr. Everybody’s list of “follows follows” can (and prolly does) include any number of bots and bad actors.
Without filtering, a bare minimum WoT list is not actually trustworthy. Not now, and definitely not as Nostr scales.
WoT relays are a great idea. But WoT itself needs better algos.
