I dropped my mother off at the airport this morning. I love her, but I am so, so relieved for her to go now. This isn't her fault, she is who she is, but I have never met a person so pathologically self-centered that she doesn't even know the harm she does. She acts as if whatever is happening in her head must be happening in everyone's head. Does she not have a theory of mind? I'm not always good and calm, but it is so difficult when someone interprets everything you say in the most uncharitable possible way. I think she might be the only person in the world I cannot regularly get along with. This is a confession.

In part, but the European Convention on Human Rights requires that when there is a question of punishment for a crime where laws of two different jurisdictions might apply, the general rule is that the more lenient of the two should be applied. Under Tito in Yugoslavia they had the death penality, but prison was max 20 or 25 years (i forget) at the time I was there, bosnian law was i believe max 40 years in prison but no death penalty. I talked to an old friend yesterday. He hasn't outgrown eat the rich mentality yet. Turns out he is also poor, barely employed, and couch surfing lonely older lady couches (by his own admission) so that makes sense. His thesis is that there shouldn't be billionaires because they dont use their money. I tried to explain that having a lot of equity in a company you built is not the same thing as a dragon sitting on a pile of gold coins. This is really hard for people to understand. (without addressing whether the dragon has done anything wrong in any case). I worry about him, and love him, but I think he's obsessed with the romantic poverty of victomhood.

This isn't legal advice, but generally speaking, the statute of limitations for IRS-related taxes is 10 years from the time the tax is assessed, but you have to have filed a return for that tax year and not fraudulently omitted taxable events. If you fail to file a return or commit fraud there is no limitation and they have eternity to smash you. Probably because I became a lawyer by accident in the first place and job one was to get a job, and then that leads to another job, and then just do what you do and follow the money. I didn't become a lawyer for ideological reasons that had me aiming at a certain path, but I certainly respect all those lawyers who were called to the bar to defend our rights.
