Nostash is a Safari browser extension I created that stores your Nostr private key and signs Nostr events with it per the NIP-07 specification. It’s a fork of Nostore, which is no longer supported by the original developer, @npub19pw…jtwk , and no longer on the Apple App Store. Nostash is currently in beta on Apple TestFlight and I’ll release it to the Apple App Store soon. Please try it with your favorite Nostr web apps and let me know if you have any feedback. I’m only maintaining Nostash as the sole NIP-07 solution on Apple platforms and do not plan to add new features. I will be putting most of my energy into Yeti, a better native iOS signer app, which will hopefully supersede Nostash once it’s ready.

It’s a new bug that was known to me only recently (thanks to Marie shaking things up with the hellthread) and we’re working on it. I have a pull request open to fix Iris to not break future threads when replying (it erroneously drops metadata on the floor about which event is the root), and we’ll need to add a workaround to Damus to attempt to find the root event in the thread so that it can still mute all the replies underneath it (even if other clients break threads due to bugs).

People who were bullish on Nostr and are suddenly feeling a bit bearish about it should consider resetting their expectations. Nostr moves as slowly or quickly as it needs to. Everything that needs to happen will happen on its own schedule. It’s easy to compare with VC-funded companies who are building alternatives and features on a much quicker timeframe and in higher quality. However, if you believe in the core tenets of Nostr, then have the conviction to stick with it. This is a strong grassroots community with a vision that has continued to develop even after 3+ years, and has only gotten stronger over time. I love Nostr.

I think it may be possible to do something like what NIP-55 describes with nostrsigner:// deep link URLs which would in theory allow us to switch between native Nostr iOS app / Nostr web app to signer app, and then back to the Nostr client using callbacks. It might be janky and disorienting with all the app switches, but that’s the most seamless experience I can see.
The alternative is the approach I’m taking now in my design, which is using action extensions to bring up a sheet to sign an event without needing to switch apps, but this requires one too many taps from being ideal.

Apple’s Secure Enclave supports only P-256, not secp256k1. It’s not compatible. I’m no cryptographer, but I believe the only solution is to have a separate dedicated Nostr signing app that you bring to the foreground when you need to sign an event.

I agree with you. However, iOS has technical limitations that prevent background apps from running. In order to be an effective remote signer, you would have to open your iOS signer app to the foreground each time you want to sign a request. There might be a possibility of using a centralized push server to wake up the signer on iOS and show a notification to the user when a signing request comes in. But it seems much more limited than what Android is capable of doing.

To be clear, my priority is building a native signer similar to NIP-55 and also support NIP-07 as an extension. I don’t think a remote signer is the best solution for iOS in this case.

1. “Tied” to your public key
2. Accepts reads and writes from you and (optionally) your follow list
3. Configured to be your read and write relay for the outbox model

There aren’t many. @npub1jlr…ynqn recently opened a pull request to update NIP-52, so I guess it’s either Coracle or Flotilla that he’s working on that supports calendars.

I haven’t used Hushmail, so I can’t comment on your situation. For Proton Mail, I pay for a custom email domain but I use SimpleLogin to proxy emails through an email alias so that my real email address doesn’t leak as easily, and I can identify the source of the leak if it does happen (and easily cut it off). Most web services have no issue with the simplelogin.com alias, but there’s a small number that do denylist the domain, so I need to use some other email address instead (either a throwaway or a dedicated address from my real domain). If you use the free Proton email domain, I doubt anyone would block it — it’s too widely used and trusted.

Nothing is wrong with nsec.app, but it’s suboptimal. It requires a server. iOS is sandboxed and only one app can be in the foreground at a time, so push notifications are needed when a signer request comes in to be able to switch to the signer each time to approve it. It requires nsec.app to be up all the time to be able to sign your events, unless you self-host. One benefit is that you can use nsec.app to approve signer requests that didn’t originate from that same device. @npub1xdt…ntxy Please let me know if I interpreted how nsec.app works incorrectly.
My proposal is to have my signer be operational offline, and not need you to switch from your Nostr app to the signer. Everything can be done through the signer action extension in the sheet while the Nostr app is in the foreground the entire time. This would work only for same-device signer requests. It’s a non-optimal UX to do this for each action, but I would also argue that the nsec.app approach is also non-optimal in slightly different ways.
Anyway, iOS makes it difficult to have an on-device signer if you want it to work on the same device as your Nostr app, regardless of approach.
