Isn't immigration already coming down rapidly? Aren't the most unpopular taxes already being cut, like the carbon tax? Tougher on crimes by injecting more into police departments? Police spending is already the biggest budget item across all Canadian cities, especially Montreal at ~18%. Second biggest is interest payments on their debt. Montreal spends ~16% of its budget on interest alone.
Deficit spending is clearly a bad thing. Using more natural resources is probably the only thing that can help in the short term. As for the handouts, are you referring to the 2021 handouts that everyone got from the government? Like most countries did? Current handouts basically go to seniors (the second biggest budget item at the federal level), and a tiny amount to EI and other special cases. Seniors also consume the most in medical services so net net they are the biggest budget item at the federal level. Carbon credit handouts essentially cancel each other out. That said, the operating costs at the federal level have sky-rocketed, on paper it's the biggest budget item. Canadians could do with fewer CRA agents, and a number of other things but it likely won't fix the ~80B CAD deficit blowout once the capital gains inclusion rate gets rolled back. PP wants to fully cut CBC funding, which currently gets a total of $1B CAD. Just another $79B CAD if he succeeds.
How much does Quebec receive in transfer payments per capita? How does that compare to transfers per capita in other provinces? Imagine a scenario where Canada dissolves and each province becomes their own country, they now keep all of the income tax that would otherwise go to the federal level. How do their finances look in that case?

Agreed. Basically any academic I interact with has at one time or another complained about the issues with the current paradigm for disseminating scientific work. I'm not talking about politically charged research, just genuine scientists in apolitical fields trying to push the boundaries of knowledge.
Content through nostr is the kind of thing they subconsciously know they need but they just haven't seen the potential for nostr yet.

Working on a manuscript submission to a scientific journal recently. Their website is full of statements about how submissions must adhere to "their principles" of open acces, open source, transparency in funding and conflicts of interest, and on and on.
At the end of all that, they're happy to charge me $4000 USD just for the privilege of hosting my paper and telling me it's "quality research published in their prestigious journal". They do none of the funding, none of the research, none of the peer review, none of the advocacy. They pidgeon-hole me into using expensive, closed-source, soul-sucking software for writing such that institutions literally have no choice but to be captured. They display my work in ways that are no more innovative than print.
The parasitic monopoly of scientific publishing is overripe for disruption by something superior like #nostr.

Are there any reasonable estimates somewhere on people leaving Twitter/X? Just anecdotally seeing posts generally get fewer "views" over the last year or so, but not sure how they quantify views in the first place.
Most of my Twitter/X feed became stuff I just didn't want to see, and the platform really got in my way in trying to find content I did want to see that I decided to just delete my account. But I'm just an insignificant drop in the Twitter/X ocean anyway.

I wish it were that easy. A big problem is that it's very hard to get microbes to do just the one thing you want to achieve in complex environments, especially recalcitrant environments like landfills. There's 40 years or so of scientific literature on exactly this subject and there's been quite a lot of progress but still no magic pill. The reality is that our junk is just going to long outlast us.
Microbes essentially have the genetic complement to do the job but there's lots going on that determines what, when, where and how they eat. Sometimes the bad stuff gets broken into food or building blocks, but then sometimes digesting something toxic ends up being conjugated into something equally toxic with a longer half-life.

Bacteria and fungi already have genes that code for things capable of degrading plastic and other industrial waste. It's just that it's a much tougher source of food to break open, and almost always requires more easily-digestible food in the environment to supplement and fuel extracellular digestion of the tougher stuff.
Saturated environments like those impose a big negative selection, so the locked up food source sits there for a while. But eventually someone will move in and make use of it, albeit very slowly. I stumbled upon a pile of old asphalt shingles in the woods many years ago. It appeared more degraded than from weathering alone so it became the basis for a research project later on. We found all sorts of microbes expressing all sorts of genes beyond the big family of peroxidases in order to eat break down the medium. Many of those genes are also involved in recycling celluloses/hemicelluloses/ligins.

Multi-cellular fungi like the mycorrhiza you mentioned typically have genome sizes in the range of 35 million base pairs or more. Fungi in the range of 3.5 million are small single-celled yeasts. For reference, baker's yeast has about 12 million. The second point is that RNA are functional elements almost always derived from some DNA blueprint that can do all sorts of things depending on internal and external conditions. They're very small molecules whereas the diameters of mycorrhizal filaments are large enough to fit all sorts of stuff. It's really astounding the quantity and size of things they can transport--including viruses and other microbes!

It's easy to target scientists themselves because their names appear on publications, and there are a number of them that also like to be in the limelight. The distribution of funding in any given field of science is similar to content creators on any centralized platform in that there are a few whales that get most funding, and the vast majority fight for the remaining pittance. The stakes are already so low for a typical scientist that they can essentially go broke at a moment's notice. There's so much more that happens around research that restructuring various aspects of the institutions and the incentive systems would probably have a more meaningful impact on reducing fraud compared to squeezing the scientists even more than they are.

Had a small scare with a disk in the TrueNAS Core machine. The disk suddenly became "Removed" according to the GUI yet nothing has physically touched the machine in months. I checked the disk to make sure it was fine, plugged it back in and just rebooted the NAS, and all is well again. Anyone else experience this?
