1) is this a hosted relay service that a company or group can purchase from you? Or are you publishing how to do it for those who wish to set up their own?

Do you have Orbot downloaded as its own app, or does Amethyst have a built-in version?
If the former, you should be able to run Orbot as a “vpn” for the phone and all of your amethyst traffic would presumably run through that, without even needing to touch the Amethyst settings.

Those days were full of a sort of excitement, wonder, possibility, and connection that formed the foundation of my commitment to Nostr.
Christmas Eve ‘22. I was overseas, jet-lagged, and lying awake at 4am listening to a Twitter Space or maybe even a NostrNest if it existed yet, where @npub1xts…kk5s and @npub18am…p424 and @npub1sg6…f63m (and maybe @npub1tvq…krq4 or @npub1lrn…qnw5 at the time?) were discussing the protocol - clients and relays, where Bitcoin might fit in, how to make relays/data resilient through redundancy, and the power of the interoperable nsec.
It was truly inspiring.
Not long after that we started posting Lightning invoices in notes, and then Will got Damus to render those invoices as a visual, payable screen. Zaps followed shortly thereafter, and the rest is history.

If you have three Lightning channels, and two of them have plenty of spending capacity, but you want to send a transaction that is larger than the balance in either individual channel… does your node “do the work” for you to make a combined payment from both channels? Would it likewise split out a larger incoming payment to multiple channels, and “fill the first cup before it starts filling the next”
How does it know to do this, if each channel is opened to a different peer? #asknostr

Eh, it depends though, doesn’t it?
A nip-05 on your company’s domain is presumably “verification” (for lack of a better term) that you do in fact work with the given business. At least in the majority of non-adversarial situations, where you can expect a company’s domain/registrar isn’t compromised.
A paid nip-05 is “verification” that you’re willing/able to spend a few sats, and are therefore much less likely to have come from a bot farm. Proof-of-funds if not perfect proof-of human…
A free nip-05 is, I agree, just a unique username. Coming from legacy social media, it’s going to take time to re-educate on how identification “works”. I expect that will happen in tandem with nostr clients becoming more versatile (and/or perhaps more standardized) in terms of how they display user profiles and handle search.
In the transition from legacy social media to nostr/keypair-based communication protocol, people will want to give their legacy followers a familiar way to find them - so if I “verify” in a Twitter post that you can find me at sexynip05@nostr.love, it provides a unique/reliable way to find me, for users who aren’t familiar with the concept of keypair crypto.
Is it less resilient and censorship-resistant? Of course. And those are important parts of what Nostr is about. Ideally as new users enter, it will pose opportunities for more and more people to learn these concepts and why they matter, such that maybe in 10 years it will be as commonplace as knowing how to attach documents to an email.

So the username is pretty flexible: it can be anything, and there’s no restriction on multiple people having the same own. It’s like a display name, for clients to show your “handle” in a sense, even though it can look a little different in different clients.
The nostr address (or NIP-05 ID) is a little more “unique”. It’s created by adding a DNS record on a particular domain that is linked to your specific npub. Some NIP-05s are free: someone owns a domain and will add the record for you, so you could then create yourname@theirdomain.com as your unique ID.
There are also providers, like the one I use, the OG nostrplebs.com from @npub1g6g…hu7v (and @npub1226…grkj too, right?) where you can pay a few sats for the ID. This could also be used in a professional environment to be yourname@yourcompany.com which is *sort of* a loose proof of identity, at least with businesses where the domain is recognizable and access to the DNS is relatively secure.
Names/IDs/discovery of users is definitely still a work in progress on Nostr, especially because different clients have different levels of capability when it comes to search and tagging. But you can think of it as different ways to represent your account that can help other users find you (or sometimes not help, lol)

As an aside, (and I don’t think we’ve met or engaged here yet, but forgive me if I’m wrong — pfps and handles-vs-npubs come and go a lot on my setup for some reason), it can take time and effort to build the kind of “bloom” environment we’re all seeking, but it’s so rewarding work toward it and contribute to that.
A completely open protocol is of course a ready target for trolls and scammers. But in my experience, while it’s easy find both here, it’s also very possible to create a generally lovely nostr community. “You get out what you put in” is a bit of a cliche, but also, it’s very true here. I try to bring compassion and curiosity to the conversations where I disagree with someone, and frequently find that we both come out the other side feeling more connected and with a broader perspective on life, nostr, each other, whatever it may be.

Gotta say, huge props to the @npub1get…0nfm team.
Alby Hub is an outstanding way to learn the basics of Lightning node running and channel management, in a way that the node-in-a-phone option doesn’t really offer.
It’s not that those tools aren’t great: I love Phoenix for its elegance, and Zeus is incredibly robust. However, Phoenix abstracts way *just enough* to make it beginner-friendly without needing to really understand, Zeus is extremely powerful for advanced users (if you know what you’re doing).
Alby Hub has found a perfect sweet spot, IMO: it incorporates fully functional channel management while making these elements accessible and easy to learn, with a friendly layout and great docs. Couple that with the PWA as a mobile wallet for the self-custodial node, and you’ve pretty much checked every box. (And I hear whispers of a mobile app…?)

What’s the general frame of mind between “buy new hardware wallet for new important stack” versus “use same perfectly-good HWW to create a new seed for the new stack”?
I know it reduces some single point of failure risk. Other considerations?
I had great fun setting up new signers and learning about Bitcoin through that process, early on. I’m solid on key management etc., but at the same time this learning experience is lifelong. Curious to know your thoughts!

I run into this issue periodically when trying to use desktop wallet software (Sparrow and Bitbox App alike).
Trying to use the Tor Proxy. Tor browser is open. Trying each recommended port, 9050, 9051, 9150, 9151, and nothing will connect.
I checked Tor browser’s preferences and nothing seems to be enabled that would block connection. I’ve restarted the wallets, browser, switched WiFi, etc… what am I missing?
Do these ports periodically change? I think I had to switch from 9050 to 9150 in Bitbox once and that fixed it.
But I haven’t been able to connect sparrow today, regardless what I try.
Both applications are up to date, as well. I’m stumped 🤔🤷‍♂️

Was watching a @npub1rxy…hnp8 vid on connecting to MyNode; once I’m comfortable with the laptop+core setup, the node-in-a-box game (or perhaps StartOS on the old laptop) is next on the list.
Wonder if that’s easier to access remotely, since it’s tailor-made for these things.

Almost; I haven’t done anything technical with the router. My reference to the VPN is just a vpn on the laptop for all traffic (which I assume might make it harder to connect to it from sparrow on another device, or BlueWallet on a phone?)…
But yes - laptop sits at home, phone with Blue (or other laptop with Sparrow) comes with me. Or could be on the home network - either/both would be expected scenarios

Ok that helps. I see how to set the user/pw. What about the node’s IP address? I see the Proxy IP and Port for connecting over Tor, but I think the IP there is a generic one that I’ve seen elsewhere and just basically says “use tor browser for network connection” rather than something I could plug into a remote wallet.
So what I’m still trying to figure out, I guess, is 1) what is the node’s actual address, and will it stay consistent when the laptop has a VPN enabled, and 2) what wallets can connect directly to Core?

Noob-ish question; I’m finding mixed answers on the web…
The wallet in Bitcoin Core is self explanatory, but [how] can you remote-connect BlueWallet (on-chain) wallet on iOS to a Core pruned node running on an old MacBook?
A number of sources seem to suggest one also needs to run Electrum server; I may just be too new to this to fully understand the concepts yet.
But my initial picture is:
1. Download/run Bitcoin core on laptop
2. Adjust settings to allow external connections
3. Tell wallet (e.g. Blue, Sparrow, etc.) the IP address/port and credentials of laptop node
4. That’s it ✅
Is this right? Even close?
If so, where does one find the info in step 3 to plug into your wallet?

Zeus is great. AlbyHub is a new one, but so far, so good. Breez is very slick, and Muun (when fees are low) is a great concept: although not actually a Lightning wallet, it does interact quite well. Blixt is another really good one — TestFlight only, I believe, and I think I saw a max channel size of 400K sats but I could have that wrong.

Thoughts on Blue vs Zeus for this use case? Zeus is brilliant for the-node-in-the-phone, but I haven’t used to connect to a node remotely before. Pros/Cons?
I *loved* BlueWallet’s UI/UX for Lightning, until they started wrapping up the custodial service, and outgoing payments would fail 90% of the time. I’m assuming that wouldn’t happen for the Alby Hub connection, since BlueWallet is simply providing an interface for a remote node… right?

I guess I pictured it like doing RBF or CPFP “through” a wallet run by mempool or something, in cases when the user’s wallet doesn’t offer those tools
But are you saying there are some transactions that literally can’t be sped up in those ways? I think I remember @npub1r8l…x5dk mentioning something like this in his ad-read for Mempool. I assumed he meant that a Lightning node couldn’t initiate the RBF, rather than the transaction itself not being eligible.

Hey Evan, if someone opens a channel in @npub1get…0nfm Hub using @npub1xnf…lpr5 Olympus as the LSP, do they gain any of the privacy benefits that Zeus wallet users get, like the auto-wrapped invoices? Or is that a feature of the wallet client itself?
The Embedded Node > Privacy doc says the LSP is currently only available for embedded node users, but (if I understand correctly) that’s changed now, correct?
