I know. Like part of me wants to be skeptical but honestly, the “occam’s razor” take (imo) is that yeah, intelligent non-human life/tech is a thing, it’s been a thing, it’s here, and the people who know about it need to figure out how to responsibly disclose it to the public.

I’ve been thinking deeply today about the concept of action: of freely manifesting the next instance of reality. This concept takes many forms, but today I’m looking at it in the context of speech and Bitcoin/cryptographic sovereignty…
*Running your own node fulfills the direct peer-to-peer nature of Bitcoin’s original state*
So. It’s easy to understand the practical case for running a Bitcoin node, with benefits like the ability to verify your coins and improved privacy.
But there’s also a philosophical consideration that I’ve been mulling over… and I’d love others’ input.
When running a node, you not only verify and sign transactions; you also broadcast them to the network, where another node (peer) can pick up the electrons (loosely described).
If you use your wallet provider’s node, you depend on them to communicate your desired transaction with your trade partner. By using another entity’s node, you sacrifice the pure peer-to-peer nature of the Bitcoin network.
Likewise, by running your own node and freely broadcasting your own transaction to your peer, you take full control of (and responsibility for) your action and its effect.
This isn’t to suggest that “you must run node to be good bitcoiner” or some nonsense like that (although it’s self-evident that running a node is usually good). Most of us still depend on internet and electric companies to achieve any of this stuff.
I’m moreso contemplating different setups and permutations of sovereignty.
There’s something beautiful about the process of communicating your intended transfer of value on your own terms, permission-less-ly, rather than asking a service provider to communicate it for you.
So, I’m coming to view it more as an expression of the principle of freedom of speech.
We know the code-is-speech case, but that’s a little different. As I understand it, it means that freedom of expression includes the math and language of code, such that code is included among in the types of speech to which we have a right.
On the other hand, I’m thinking about the moment of broadcasting a transaction from your own node.
Taking this action is exercising the freedom *to* speak, to express your intention of transferring value.
To broadcast a Bitcoin transaction, from your own node, is to declare your participation in this global network of near-perfect consensus.
I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there is something profound about that moment of action, of doing, of “is-ness”, of the truth and reality of manifesting action in the present moment.
Of course, grokking this profound experience is not constrained to Bitcoin transactions — the beauty of being/doing exists everywhere — but I’m struck today by the freeness of action, and how that action is itself an expression of the right to speak and to assemble.
There’s something exceptional about action - generation, manifestation, creation. When the freedom to speak is overlaid on the significance of action, then the choice to run your own node, and to broadcast your transaction directly to the network of your peers takes on a deeper significance and value.

Depending on your technical level and your privacy preferences:
Robosats is a peer-to-peer exchange that runs over Tor, and is one of the most private ways to buy Bitcoin (ie you’re not tying your identity to every transaction you make, or making your net worth known)
I believe @npub1ex7…vyt9 is now available in Europe. It’s an excellent way to stack Bitcoin, with an ethical company, but like most exchanges requires KYC and reduces privacy. Not sure if @npub1cas…dg5l is in Europe yet, but same thing. Also @npub1536…pswl is a European app, peer to peer, which appears to be extremely user-friendly.

When #frost becomes a viable multisig-style tool for nostr private keys, does the cryptography in some way allow for “converting” an existing nsec into a FROST structure?
In other words, could I retain my primary keypair and somehow make it into a an offline key? (Currently it was generated in @npub18m7…q955 and has only been exposed to Damus and a pen-and-paper backup).
I’d love to gain the additional security but not have to rebuild the content and social graph that I’ve spent nearly 2 years building. But how?
Or as another route, could I use a new FROST multi/nsec along with an nsec-bunker type authorization tool, such that the new key is the master key behind my bostonwine nsec?

Dunno if this would be the right fit, but I recall it being quite interesting when I first heard about it — have you looked into Sun Exchange? That’s a respectably nuanced take 🤝
Considering that most exchange/swap services offer shitcoins, at least providing an easy and private platform to exchange crypto for Bitcoin (for anyone who’s gained the understanding of why they should) is a good thing.
Maybe there’s a “middle way” where the messaging can emphasize Bitcoin, or link to articles for users who might be looking education.
Example: new user hears that there’s an opportunity to accept crypto for their charity campaign, not knowing the difference. The setup could default to Bitcoin, or even offer to accept any crypto and auto-swap into Bitcoin, with a link or tooltip as to why it’s the best money for their campaign (ethical, un-censorable, no leader/decentralized, etc) and could leave open the free-market option to choose a different currency (even fiat?) if desired.
It would create an opportunity to “feed the good” without (I assume) requiring a technical overhaul, or preventing inexperienced-but-well-meaning customers from discovering the product (and even being steered in the right direction once they sign up). My two sats ⚡️
Of course, you don’t need me to tell you how to manage your product, but I love thinking through this stuff and appreciate the discussion 🤝

Philosophically, I get your point (and kind of agree: shitcoiners gonna shitcoin). On the other hand, in terms of personal responsibility, I would want the things I touch, if I have control over them, to feed a trajectory of net positive for humanity, which the vast majority of shitcoining is not.
Someone collecting donations for a worthy cause, but in crypto? Idk, it’s tricky. Perhaps they can help a lot of people with that money before it goes to zero. But feeding into a system of scams comes with additional negative externalities that could be largely avoided if their only option was Bitcoin.

The bitcoiners I follow will *sometimes* post about Bitcoin, but that is not the majority of the content in my feed.
Want to attract new users? Stop perpetuating the story that everyone here is a bitcoiner, and all the content is Bitcoin and nostr. That was true a year ago, but it’s not true now. I don’t hear new users complain about “too much bitcoin” anymore.
My feed is full of art, food, family. Life events, projects, social movements. Politics, sports, shitposting. It doesn’t take much to shift the narrative. Just start telling the right story 🤝
The road ahead is bright. These are my coffee musings this morning ☕️

Hey @npub18am…p424 this account used to post every time a new nest got started. I loved that because I might be chilling or heading to work or something, and then see this and hop into a random nest. It was dope. But I think when nests were updated, it stopped posting. Any chance if you hit the keyboard against your desk a few times, it might start up again?

Hey Carlo, this got me thinking…
What would you think about putting together a collaborative “artists of Nostr” calendar, with work like yours and a few other artists like @npub1ndk…gk2v, @npub1gwa…a2sz, @npub1rt6…0y9g, maybe others…
Artists could choose what to submit, or could ask the nostr/#artstr community to vote on their favorite pieces to be included.
I just love the idea of showcasing the variety of artists and your styles, from around the world, all of whom share the common thread of Nostr.
Zap Splits could enable each artist earning revenue.
Expanding on that, if any nostriches run, say, a farmers market booth, or other small/local retail setting, these could provide an opportunity to purple-pill their customers. Not sure how long it takes to get these calendars made up, but Carlo at least I know you have a process in place 😉 (Also, I would hate for this to in-any-way overshadow the work and effort you’ve already put in to your own initiative here, so it may feel more appropriate to wait until your 5/5 limited runs have all sold before doing anything with this (if anyone even wants to, of course)…
What do you all think? Brilliant? Entirely uninteresting?
I’m always looking for opportunities to promote nostr (and its users) wherever I can, so this feels like a fun initiative, especially since Nostr is so early, and this community is so passionate, I’d expect an enthusiastic response.
