1 year #Bitcoin onchain resumé of #Ordinals:
The trend of a faster growing blockchain I pointed out 1 year ago did not stop. Even tho according to some bitcoiners the ending of the hype would make it go back to normal.
In the past year we expirienced an increase of around ~91GB (Messured Feb.23 --> Feb.24) .
Before we had an stabil increase of ~65GB (Messured Feb.22 --> Feb.23).

Its clearly increased with the launch of ordinals in february 2023 and caused an additional ~27GB load per year. Thats an increase of 40% !!!
Funny rock pictures don't hurt anyone. So why does it matter?
Bitcoin's biggest asset is its decentralisation. Meaning that all users should be able to run their own fullnode and verify transactions them self. Not having to trust others.
However not everyone is able to run a big data centre like amazon. Some don't have enough money, others might have bad internet. Ideal would be that even in the most remote village in africa in an totalitarian state a poor guy can run a fullnode via tor.
But that only works on 2 conditions. 1) The totall size is not too big, so they can store it on drives which are accesable (lower end of size)and affordable. And 2) The incoming data is not bigger that the amount the can download per second.
Its easy to throw of the ones that have the worst conditions. But generally speaking every increase will throw off another lower layer of people, a level of decentralisation, with each increase. With 40% increase the ordinals protocoll however is no small increase.
We might see these results in ~4 years when nodes pass the 1TB (a common drive size). But maybe we won't even notize it since most private nodes run behind tor.
We can't really undo the activation, because lightning got so far. However we can standardize to prune Ordinal data. So we don't throw of new and existing fullnode runners.

But you can setup these cards on your own ln node. Completly uncustodial. Lnbits has many features suporting it.

Ethical #Bitcoin question:
If I would have generated purposely a badly secured private key, with Bitcoins on its corresponding adresses, how should I handle it? Not knowing if the coins were lost in the first place.
Take it and hand it back to a better secured adress (via signed OP_Return communication)? Ask for a security fee? Take it all if after 6 months if noone reacts?

I've been there and have good friends living in Michigan. And don't watch/follow CNN or FoxNews alot. Both are brainwashed political media.
Accesability is one important point. Yes, state terrorist are always able to bypass the law and are able to get a gun. But its about the average people that have range attacks, mental issues etc. that have extrem easy acces to guns. I wouldn't open channels below 1.000.000sats. Its just too expensiv. Bigger is better.
Having more channels will increase the chance to succesfully route a payment and reduce the risk of having to rely on only 1 or 2 peers. So 9x1million channels is the best with your 6million I would say.
But it depends on how you wanna use it. I assume you dont want a routing node. And I guess you spend more than you expect to recieve.
Open 6x channels with each 1m with batching to reduce the fee. Do a submarineswap to move 500k out of each channel back too your onchain adress and open another 3x channels. You can recieve 1,5M and send 6M now.
In case your expectet spend/recieve ratio is diffrent swap out more or less too open more channels.
You could instead also open balanced channels straight away but that requires some coordination with the other node in LND. If use core lightning its easier.
Inform yourself beforehand about the terms and conditions of certain big nodes.
Some might close inactive channels after a certain time others might drain your side completly. I believe it was on amboss where people rate nodes weither they pull or push sats.
I'd say don't rely to much on channels from lightningnetwork+. Must users there are beginners. Their nodes may become inactiv and there routing quality is overall pretty bad. It makes you trouble. Its nice too support them once you have established own good connections.
Too keep it simple I recommend medium too big nodes too open channels too.
Lightning Terminal has a good channel peer recommandation. They also guide you on how you could increase the perfprmance of your node.
