The thing is, if they did what they said they did (seed stays on device) they could be quite cool. Like turning phones into hardware wallets.
BUT, they have a “sync” feature in which the content is encrypted so that it can be sent to another device. This would be OK if the encryption key was known only to the recipient device…
BUT, the encryption key is actually your PIN. The intermediary (Apple, etc.) holds the “encrypted” payload, so that if you lose your phone, you can get a new one, download the encrypted passkey DB, and decrypt it with your same PIN.
This search space is incredibly tiny (4-6 digits). So any attacker with access to the encrypted payloads can easily brute force it to get everything. So the security of your sync’d passkeys is entirely reliant on the intermediary.
It’s “trust me bro” security masquerading as sovereignty.

Stay away from those physical keys, overpriced, can't be updated, when there's a vulnerability you have to buy a new one, some of them are closed source too. Use an app for 2FAs.

I'm looking forward to @nprofile…vjlg for this type of experience. I don't know if this fits in their roadmap, but the neighborhood feature seems like a way to jump around different algorithms, be they manual curation or possibly TikTok style.
I personally sometimes want discovery where I see people I don't follow, but might be interested in based on some non-creepy algorithm. Other times I just want the newspaper (what are the people I follow up to). I hope we can support both modes and easily switch between them.
Pretty bearish on "AltmanBook" getting off the ground... At this point, incumbent social networks have pretty big network effects. That means that there's going to be a comparatively large need for a significantly better product for people to leave.
Nostr is fundamentally different than what any centralized platform can offer. AI algorithm blah blah ... sure... AltmanBook will still need to have actual human beings responsible for centralized content policy decisions, and that's where it'll fail like all the rest.

A lot of people on Nostr have AIDS (algorithm implementation derangement syndrome). They like the chronological algorithm, and don't think people with a different opinion should have a choice. I hope someday there is a marketplace of algorithms that are selectable in client, or even a simple interface to create your own.
Having only a chronological feed is like having email with only an inbox, or storing your files without a folder structure. When you have a large amount of data to deal with, it helps to have tools to sort, search and manipulate said data.
Yeah, some AI is good, for example dodging those nude pics.. I switched to LLM analysing the notes of annoying users, it is not perfect but it is a start..
Locally run LLMs will be a thing in the coming months or a year.
Coupled with discovery LLMs that run on servers this may be a thing on Nostr.
X, IG, and TikTok already exist. Whoever wants that on nostr should explore building it. I have switched to nostr exactly because those algorithms are not shoved in my face. I don’t want an algorithm to learn what it thinks I like and feed me more of that. I will be staying with my chronological feed and seeing only content from my follows 😂

i think of time as a vertical spiral not a line. where vertically stacked points on that spiral are very similar if you live through them.
but i also think only humans can experience time as a spiral. for an ape in the wild, time is just a circle that goes around and around as they don't have the ability to influence it and can't make it better (an upward spiral) or worse (a downward spiral).
also for humans the spiral can take 100 years to clock back a full round, for other creatures, it spans few years at most.
so in short. you can relive your past if you live long enough 😁
and that's why the idea of living forever is retarded.

From my own experience this will take you around 5 years if you start today. Most will start to accept under the table long before they go public with it.
Monero helps to not endanger them (steep learning curve with coin joins, and self-custodial LN).
You need to talk to those who know the value of cash. Small shops, farmers, restaurants and craftsmen. Also it helps to introduce them to Monero as well. Bitcoin to store value and Monero to accept digital cash with ease.
Forget about chains or big supermarkets. They are the result of the fiat economy and will be the last to adapt.

Monero community's approach is interesting:
1) Devs pitch their feature/project to the market (users), apply for funding.
2) Users vote with their money.
3) ➡️Features that are actually desired by the community get developed
Imagine grep being funded by salaried devs. It would become a web client with telemetry and garbage collector, written in a nich language and a complex build system.
Like systemd or Google Chrome.
Sad state of affairs:
1. No funding = passion and user-focus, but unsustainable
2. Employment = stable, but rot
3. Funding like core or foundations = professional, but directionless, featurism, detached from userbase, hubris, hidden agendas
4. Crowdfunding = rarely works, unreliable
What now?
Bitcoin Core dev proposes to convert Core into a walled garden, membership-only repo.

Ich dachte zuerst, Argentarius hat das perfekte Wort gewählt. Anspruch klang für mich weicher, fast ideell. Anrecht dagegen wirkte streng, bürokratisch, irgendwie zu nah am Gesetz.
Aber ich habe heute kurz recherchiert und gemerkt, dass es genau andersherum ist. Früher war ein Anspruch einfach eine gedachte Erwartung. Aber wieder einmal hat der Sozialstaat eingegriffen und ihn zu etwas gemacht, das man einklagen kann 🙈
Kindergeld, Rente, Wohngeld wurde zu einem „gesetzlichen Anspruch“ erklärt und wurde zur einseitigen Pflicht mit Formular, Frist und Nachweispflicht gemacht. Damit haben sich auch die Bedeutungen verschoben. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts war Anspruch eher abstrakt, eine vage Erwartung an Leistung.
Heute ist es genau umgekehrt. Anspruch steht für Paragraphen und Pflicht. Anrecht klingt plötzlich weich, fast menschlich und beschreibt viel besser, was Geld eigentlich ist.

As a currency, Bitcoin can fail in a number of ways, some of which haven’t even been considered. Even today, it’s a stretch to call it one, although in both practical and theoretical terms, it is. But is it used as a currency? Hardly. @nprofile…zph9 did a poll not too long ago asking Bitcoiners how they use Bitcoin. 94% answered “savings,” 5% said “means of payment,” and 1% said “something else”. Maybe this changes in the next few years, maybe it gets worse. It depends on which narrative gains more traction: the one about Bitcoin being a digital asset, or the one about it being a cryptocurrency. The odds aren’t in favor of the latter right now and that’s bad, because I have to agree with @nprofile…yary - if Bitcoin remains just a store of value, it fails to stay relevant long-term. It also fails as a project to separate money from the state. Reversing that trend will take serious effort and it’s entirely on us. We need to run nodes, mine at home, educate newcomers, and call out bad actors and scammers, both outside and especially *inside* the space. Just repeating dumb memes like “everything is good for Bitcoin” or “nothing stops this train” while doing nothing to push it as a means of payment won’t get us there. One day we’ll realize we were the frogs being slowly boiled. So yeah, I don’t think Bitcoin is guaranteed to win or solidify as a currency, but the opportunity is there and I’m not sitting on the sidelines. I’m doing my part.

In my hero mushroom dose journey I got in touch with that... And exclaimed "if we new where we are going, we'd never be afraid of dying". It was beautiful. Self censorship is something I have always failed at.
Caused me many problems in school, I could never keep my head down and be silent whenever a teacher was spreading misinformation.
I got suspended for arguing with a teacher because they told the class that Australian does not have a constitution and called me stupid, said that only USA has a constitution.
There were others just as smart or aware is a better word as me, who were able to practice self censorship, and they have had much more "successful" lives than I have, because when their employer says something they don't like they just carry on, while I tell them to get fucked and explain why they are wrong.
