Today my grandmother told me a story that I have to share with you #Nostr #Storiestr
Her grandfather was productive businessman back in the days and wanted best for her dad, so he was tryharding whole life, to save for his son.
She born in 1952 and as a celebration, her grandfather gave to her dad whole chest of coins just to save it for her needs.
In 1953, the communist government of Czechoslovakia abruptly executed a severe currency reform that devalued the currency overnight. The evening before the reform, the head of state reassured my GrandGrandGrandDad that their money was secure and that the currency is strong. Likely realizing they could no longer conceal the impending change, the government acted swiftly. People who went to bed believing their savings were safe awoke to find their money had lost almost all its value.
The reform was orchestrated in secrecy, with new banknotes printed abroad to prevent information leaks and public dissent. The regime viewed its own people as a threat—those who, due to their assets, were not easily controlled. By undermining their wealth, the government sought to tighten its grip on the populace.
The exchange rates were brutally unfavorable: amounts up to 300 Kčs (Czechoslovak koruna) were converted at a rate of 5:1, while any amount above that was exchanged at 50:1. To put this into perspective, using an approximate historical exchange rate of 7 Kčs to 1 USD, 300 Kčs was about $43 USD. So, up to that amount, people received new currency worth about one-fifth of their original savings. However, for any amount above 300 Kčs, the loss was even more severe. If someone had 1,000 Kčs (approximately $143 USD), they would receive only 74 new Kčs (about $10.50 USD) in return—a devastating loss. This move wiped out personal savings and demonstrated how state-controlled money can be manipulated, highlighting the unreliability of government-backed currencies.
