I spend a lot of time following Telegram channels, both Russian and Western media, and military bloggers, all in an effort to grasp the military, political and propaganda dynamics of this awful war. I figure it's important to construct a big picture view, but too many people, too much of the time, are weaving narratives that don't stand up to microscopic scrutiny. On all sides.
Over the past several months I thought I had a solid sense that, despite many strategic blunders and critical rethinks along the way, Russia was systematically bringing all its mathematical advantages to bear in an inexorable, gradual but crushing offensive in Donbass that will probably settle the overall outcome of the war in its favor. Maybe it will take awhile, but the trend seems irreversible. Then the Ukrainian Kursk offensive happened -- definitely taking the Russians by surprise and achieving at least a psychological blow against Moscow -- and the media is full of the kind of euphoric talk of Ukrainian speed, innovation, and flexibility that we haven't seen since late 2022 [when Ukrainian advances were really impressive, exposing Russia's lack of effective strategy].
As anyone who follows this page can tell, I am rather dubious about this supposedly brilliant Ukrainian offensive. I am no military expert, but I do know that victory goes to the one who relentlessly destroys his enemy's capacity to fight, not the one who makes the flashiest moves. I'm not advocating here, just acknowledging grim reality. Unlike the tone of a couple years ago, major Western analysts are also skeptical of this Ukrainian gambit, which you can readily discern by reading the New York Times, The Economist or even The Guardian's coverage of this subject.
But I have been waiting for the one military analyst to weigh in on Kursk whom I've found to be overwhelmingly right, in a reliable and reasonably predictive way, over the past couple of years on the macro level -- he backs his conclusions with a magisterial command of the micro level [as much as can be possible amid this foggiest of wars] -- and that is Sergei Witte, aka Big Serge. Update from Moscow.
There's an increasing sense here that Vladimir Putins' unscheduled visit to Checnya is significant.
Many political observers are waiting for the Kremlins "response" to the Kursk incursion, but as we know, the Russian President is not prone to rash or reactionary responses, interestingly, and generally unreported in Western Media is that Russian air defence forces also defeated Ukraines biggest drone attack, since the start of the conflict, on Moscow day before.
Some analysts believe that the strategy in the West is to force Russias hand to significantly escalate the conflict in Ukraine, I however belive Putin has no intention of playing a role defined for him or Russia in Washington or London, I do however feel that something significant could be brewing at the Kremlin regarding Kievs recent escalations and provocations which are seen here as desperate attempts by a failing Kiev to impress their sponsors in the West.
