Public opinion polls consistently show the economy is one of the top issues, if not the top issue, for American voters.

This may strike some as odd, since official government statistics show low unemployment and declining price inflation, suggesting the Federal Reserve has engineered a “soft landing” bringing down inflation without causing a recession.
So why the concern over the economy? One reason is more people are realizing government economic figures hide the truth about the economy.

Dr. Antoni and Dr. St. Onge use a more accurate measure of inflation than that used by government to uncover the true state of the economy. Their calculations show that the US economy has been in recession since 2022.
The government claims that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by approximately 13.7 percent from 2019 through the first half of 2024.
When the more accurate inflation number is used, the result is a 2.5 percent decline in GDP.
The federal government’s figures also show the American people’s disposable income increased by 12.9 percent from 2019 through the first half of 2024.
However, when the more accurate way of calculating price inflation is used, it shows Americans’ disposable income declined by 2.3 percent.
Dr. Antoni and Dr. St. Onge are hardly the first to expose how the government uses doctored statistics to make the economy look stronger.
John Williams’s ShadowStats has regularly shown how government manipulates data to underreport unemployment and price inflation.
Government distortions of economic data mislead the people regarding the true state of the economy. They also mislead Congress, the president, and maybe even the Federal Reserve.
Until the Audit the Fed bill becomes law, we will not know for sure what data the central bank relies on.
Making economic policy decisions based on flawed data enables politicians to ignore the dangers posed by Congress’s refusal to cut federal spending.
Government spending puts pressure on the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates low. The Federal Reserve can keep interest rates low because the dollar’s world reserve currency status guarantees a strong demand for US dollars.
A growing number of countries, though, are seeking alternatives to the dollar. One reason for this is resentment over the US government’s use of the dollar’s world reserve currency status to force other counties to abide by US demands.
Saudi Arabia is moving away from exclusively using dollars for its oil trade.
The “petrodollar” is a major reason the dollar has been able to maintain its world reserve currency status.
If the dollar loses its world reserve currency status, America would face a major economic crisis. This crisis could lead to the collapse of the welfare-warfare state and the fiat money system that makes it possible. The danger is the replacement could be even worse as a frightened populace turns toward an authoritarian promise of security in exchange for restriction of liberty.
However, the collapse could also result in a turn toward respect for the principles of liberty, limited government, free markets, and a foreign policy of peace and free trade.
Those who know the truth must continue to educate our fellow citizens about the benefits of liberty.

if a network uses proof of work it should be asic resistant. no worry about specialized hardware being made by a small number of manufacturers. you can get the hardware at any computer parts store. I have heard the story about asic friendly proof of work enabling a network to become a load balancer for the electrical grid but I don't completely buy it, and it depends on the state cooperating. it's difficult to hide an asic farm. I feel safer under the assumption that the network can still be healthy just in case the state is hostile. you get that with asic resistant proof of work.
I still have reservations about proof of work. it's always going to have a geographic centralization pressure. people who live in places with expensive electricity can't participate in network consensus without stealing the electricity. I can't do mining at my house at all for instance. even heating my home with mining equipment still costs me more than other types of heat.
on other consensus mechanisms all you need is a laptop with an SSD plugged in and some coins. that's very compelling and might very well be worth the tradeoffs under certain circumstances. at least I can participate.
I just want client side only, custom feeds. I'd like to be able to slap together a feed that's RSS bots, a separate feed that's my friends, one to keep up with nostr development, one that's hashtags etc. What's with this focus on one feed, is it because that's what xitter does? Nostr can do so much more!

It's my go to at this point. It's an arch desktop without all the setup, absolutely fantastic, you can't beat it.
I go the "no desktop" route and install Wayland, xwayland and a compositor (sway for me, and I also have labwc and sfwbar for a "normal" cascading, mouse oriented environment that I hardly ever use, and ly as my login manager) but if you prefer a DE and you like KDE or whatever that stuff installs seamlessly by itself.

Ich argumentiere, dass die zivilisatorische Multipolarität – die ich die BRICS-Ideologie nenne – komplexer ist, als die meisten Analysten annehmen, da sie viel vom Konzept der souveränen Demokratie übernimmt, das Russland seit den frühen 2000er Jahren innenpolitisch verfolgt. Zunächst gab es keine außenpolitische Komponente zur souveränen Demokratie, da Russland zu diesem Zeitpunkt bestrebt war, sich in den Westen zu integrieren.

From his remarks: "This liberal civilizational identity is no longer limited to the cultural confines of Europe. It is assumed to extend globally, which makes the expansion of NATO “to include Japan, Australia, South Korea, the Philippines, and any other democratic country that, like Argentina, expresses a wish to join,” as suggested in a recent open letter signed by more than a hundred former and current political and military officials, the reincarnation of what Francis Fukuyama once termed "the end of history."
Meanwhile, the BRICS+ countries are promoting a very different view of the relationship between sovereignty and security, one that offers more space for both political and values neutrality. Whereas NATO presumes that the cultural and political ideals of states must conform, lest global security be undermined, the BRICS alliance is premised on the idea that it is political and cultural diversity, rather than unanimity, that enhances global security.
We can now grasp why the struggle between Russia and the West over Ukraine has global significance. It is a conflict of visions. NATO assume that its outcome will determine the fate of its core ideology—the belief that the expansion of liberal values will lead to global peace and prosperity. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, this has become NATO's defining belief and core mission.
BRICS also assumes that the outcome of this war will determine the fate of its core ideology—the belief that cultural and political diversity are key to global peace and prosperity. Its defining belief and core mission increasingly lie in the institutionalization of civilizational multipolarity.
I argue that Civilizational Multipolarity—which I call the BRICS ideology—is more sophisticated than most analysts assume, since it borrows much from the concept of Sovereign Democracy that Russia has pursued domestically since the early 2000s. At first there was no foreign policy component to sovereign democracy, since Russia was at that point committed to integrating into the West.
The hope that sovereign democracy might serve as a means of anchoring Russia in the West survived for a decade, but when it was abandoned, it was the emphasis on sovereignty that allowed Russia to transition smoothly from a pro-western foreign policy, to a policy of civilizational multipolarity. Since 2022, Russia has, in addition, begun to define itself as a “civilization-state.”
The meaning of this term is still evolving, but one scholar who has thought deeply about the relationship between civilizations, multipolarity, and security is Moscow State University Professor, Boris Mezhuev.
Mezhuev makes the case that Liberal internationalism is philosophically at odds with foreign policy Realism, and that this incompatibility is preventing the resolution of many conflicts around the globe. The challenge facing world leaders is how to prevent this tension from escalating into a conflict that consumes the entire globe. Mezhuev suggests that there is a framework within which this conflict need not become existential. He calls this framework Civilizational Realism." (...)

Ubuntu is really a beginner distro. I'd much rather use Debian than Ubuntu. And yes, I prefer Fedora over Ubuntu. I've tested or daily driven just about every distro out there worth it's salt, including QubesOS, and I always come back to Fedora as my main daily driver. Fun fact: Linus Torvalds uses Fedora as well. In the end, it's a personal preference. Daily drive it live off a USB stick for a week or run it in a VM and see how you like it.

All of this, I’ve said much of what you’ve said here before. Particularly the rehabilitation thing, people in jail are left to just rot almost. So much could be done with the time they are paying for whatever it they did.. whether it’s putting them to work doing some sort of work, growing food in the prison grounds for homeless? maybe doing a co-op program or having them take schooling or educating themselves in some way so that they don’t get out and are basically thrown back into society with no skills, this almost forces them back into crime to survive. So many things are being done the wrong way, the wrong people are in charge in so many facets of society. Corruption is out of control, and politicians are t trying to change anything they just kick the can down the road and make their connections to do backend deals to line their own pockets and get their taxpayer paid pensions. You could cut most governments in half, and they’d still be too big.
