That is the natural course unfortunately. It doesn't "have" to be that way, but it presupposes strict self-control and shared morals/ethics. For example, it is in your immediate best interest to vote yourself favors/money, but ethically you shouldn't as it would be wrong to take from others or tell them how to live.
This standard, can persist, but it is such a high standard for the masses and breaking it can be done so privately and carried out through a 3rd party so that history has shown this standard always falls, without fail, given enough time.

Things Australians find weird/curious/different about US Elections:
* They are held on a weekday (seriously what the?)
* In some states you can register to vote on the day
* You need ID to vote in many places
* The whole election is not run by an independent electoral commission (that has transparency and ensures consistency across states)
* Votes aren’t the same standardised paper ballots across the country but a random selection of different methods eg electronic in some places
* You can have a mix of first past the post and ranked choice voting (preferential voting?) based on each states choice in a federal election
* You have an ‘Electoral College’ which you can explain to us a million times and we will understand but simultaneously not understand
* You don’t have to vote (or at least make an effort and turn up to get your name crossed off)
*You don’t have Democracy sausage sizzles and an app or map that tells you which polling booths have them.

Dia oficial de votação nos EUA foi marcado por clima de votação tranquilo. Quase 50% dos eleitores já havia votado de forma antecipada. Trump fez suposta denúncia de "trapaça", e Kamala Harris bateu na porta de eleitores.
A votação para presidente dos EUA está oficialmente encerrada nos estados de Indiana e Kentucky, os dois primeiros locais a fechar as urnas no país. Após uma campanha turbulenta e com ineditismos, o dia da eleição ocorreu sem grandes imprevistos.

A primeira apuração, embora simbólica, veio rápido: Dixville Notch, uma localidade em New Hampshire, começou a votar à meia-noite, seguindo uma tradição local.
Como a localidade tem apenas seis eleitores, o resultado não demorou para sair, mas só repetiu a situação de empate indicada nas pesquisas de opinião: Kamala Harris levou três votos, e Trump, os outros três.
Embora o dia oficial de votação tenha sido nesta terça, cerca de 78 milhões de um total de aproximadamente 160 milhões de eleitores já haviam votado de forma antecipada através dos correios ou locais específicos de votação — o que é permitido nos EUA. O alto número de eleitores que se anteciparam tornou a votação desta terça mais tranquila.
Pelo país, houve alguns relatos dispersos de atrasos na abertura de locais de votação por conta de condições climáticas, além de erros de impressão de cédulas e problemas técnicos, de acordo com o um balanço da agência de notícias norte-americana Associated Press.
Os relatos, no entanto, foram “em grande parte eventos de rotina esperados e planejados”, disse a consultora sênior do diretor da Agência de Segurança Cibernética e de InfraestruturaCait Conley, .

Ao contrário da campanha, o dia também não teve discursos inflamados. O republicano Donald Trump votou nesta terça-feira na Flórida e afirmou que não contestará o resultado "se a eleição for justa".
Mais cedo, no entanto, publicou em suas redes sociais um vídeo de sua campanha com notícias falsas.
Kamala Harris, que já havia votado de forma antecipada, deu uma série de entrevistas a rádios e até bateu na porta de eleitores na Pensilvânia, um dos principais estados-chave.

Um tiro na orelha, uma desistência, uma condenação, outra tentativa de assassinato, um empate histórico.
Os norte-americanos foram às urnas nesta terça-feira (5) diante de uma das campanhas mais singulares da história recente dos Estados Unidos.
O resultado também será inédito: dele, sairá a primeira presidente mulher dos EUA ou o primeiro presidente condenado pela Justiça do país.
Frente a frente estão Kamala Harris, uma ex-procuradora-geral que é a atual vice-presidente do país e reinjetou ânimo entre o eleitorado democrata ao assumir o lugar de Joe Biden na briga pelo comando da Casa Branca, gerando um clima de euforia que foi comparado ao causado por Barack Obama em 2008.
E Donald Trump, o ex-magnata do mercado imobiliário de luxo e ex-presidente dos EUA que tenta voltar ao posto após conseguir mobilizar e reorganizar seu eleitorado mesmo depois de virar réu em quatro processos e ser condenado em um deles.
As pesquisas de intenção de votos apresentaram ao longo da campanha o cenário mais apertado já registrado, o que fará com que a eleição provavelmente seja definida por uma margem muito estreita de votos.
Por isso, todos os focos desta terça e dos próximos dias estarão nos chamados estados-chave, nos quais não há uma tradição de preferência por um ou outro partido e onde o resultado varia de acordo com a eleição.
O complexo sistema de contagem de votos da eleição norte-americana favorece quem levar a melhor nesses estados. Os estados são representados por delegados, que refletem a vontade das urnas e definirão o resultado final.
Por isso, ambos os candidatos passaram mais da metade do tempo de campanha entre os sete estados-chave (Geórgia, Carolina do Norte, Wisconsin, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan e Pensilvânia).
Neles, saíram em busca de nichos específicos, que também devem definir as eleições: os homens negros, o voto latino --- que também se movem aos poucos para o lado republicano ---, as mulheres brancas --- que, segundo pesquisas, votarão mais em Kamala -- e, principalmente, os jovens.
Nesse último eleitorado, as campanhas não economizaram esforços. Analistas dos dois partidos passaram um ano e meio estudando as opiniões dos jovens e elaborando uma lista de programas de televisão e podcasts que esses eleitores consomem nos estados-chave para oferecer seus candidatos em entrevistas.
E despejaram uma chuva de promessas de novas linhas de crédito, ajudas econômicas e melhorias na vida econômica desse público, que vivem pior na comparação com a geração de seus pais, mas ainda tem esperança com o lema do sonho americano.
Agora, conquistas básicas, como pagar o aluguel e colocar comida em casa, viraram o norte desse eleitorado.
"Hoje, a gente nem sonha em comprar uma casa, que era o objetivo dos nossos pais. Pagar um aluguel é nosso grande desafio", disse a vendedora Carolina Jiménez, de 28 anos, filha de imigrantes mexicanos que vive no Arizona e afirma que votará em Kamala Harris.
"Ela é mais estável, mais preparada e capacitada. Trump será uma regressão", afirma.
O engenheiro venezuelano Daniel Blanco, de 35 anos, que vive em Miami, na Flórida, há mais de dez anos, decidiu votar em Donald Trump por decepção com a gestão do democrata Joe Biden.
"Sei que Trump é nacionalista, profundamente anti-imigrante e egocêntrico. Mas acho que a proposta democrata não entende as necessidades do cotidiano do cidadão", disse ao g1 o venezuelano, que já votou de forma antecipada.
O mau desempenho da economia deu carona para a segunda grande preocupação dos eleitores nesta corrida à Casa Branca: o aumento da imigração, principalmente a ilegal, que bateu um recorde histórico nos EUA em dezembro do ano passado.
Se de um lado o candidato republicano manteve seu discurso efusivo anti-imigração, por outro, os números altos de entrada de imigrantes durante a gestão de Joe Biden acabaram favorecendo Trump.
Em dezembro de 2023, o número de entradas ilegais no país pela fronteira com o México alcançou um recorde histórico dos EUA, e os próprios democratas entenderam que era a hora de frear esse fluxo para evitar prejuízo nas urnas.
Durante a campanha, Biden, na política migratória mais dura de governos democratas recentes, determinou o fechamento parcial das fronteiras, autorizou deportações e limitou o número de entradas diárias.

O efeito foi quase imediato, e essas entradas caíram cerca de 70% um mês depois. Mas o discurso fomentado pela campanha republicana, de que a situação ficará incontrolável com uma nova gestão democrata, já estava nas ruas. E nas redes sociais.
"Essa campanha teve muitas características das campanhas pós-2016, ano da eleição de Trump e do Brexit (a saída do Reino Unido da União Europeia), consideradas um marco para quem estuda o tema. Nelas, os candidatos podem falar com públicos segmentados através das redes sociais, o que não dava para fazer só através da TV", afirma ao g1 Artur Ituassu, professor de Relações Internacionais da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio).
"E os temas da imigração e a economia são dois exemplos disso."
Independentemente do resultado, Ituassu diz ver riscos à democracia diante das particularidades desta corrida à Casa Branca, que não foram poucas: Donaldo Trump foi condenado em um dos quatro processos aos que responde na Justiça no início da campanha. Depois, sofreu duas tentativas de assassinato, e, em uma delas, foi atingido por um tiro de raspão na orelha.
Antes disso, Joe Biden desistiu de tentar a reeleição após um desempenho desastroso no primeiro debate eleitoral em que confundiu nomes e não conseguiu concluir pensamentos. O episódio gerou uma onda sem precedentes de pressão por parte de seu partido, da imprensa, de eleitores e até de celebridades para que abandonasse a corrida.
A questão etária tomou conta da etapa inicial da campanha, quando Trump questionava constantemente a capacidade de Biden, de 81 anos, de governar os Estados Unidos por mais quatro anos.
Mas a tecla que Trump insistiu em bater e que foi o fator determinante para a desistência de Biden acabou se virando contra o republicano: sua nova adversária, 18 anos mais nova, começou a questionar a sanidade e até o preparo físico do republicano.
“Se Donald Trump está tão exausto da campanha [argumento que o próprio Trump usou na reta final de campanha], será que ele está em forma para um dos empregos mais difíceis do mundo: o de presidente dos Estados Unidos?”, escreveu Kamala em uma postagem na qual compartilhava um vídeo em que ele parece fechar os olhos e tirar uma soneca durante um evento de campanha.

E quem vencer a eleição terá de guardar fôlego para o que a nova gestão da Casa Branca espera: além de um cenário interno turbulento por conta do aumento do custo de vida, a questão imigratória e o crescimento da violência e a explosão da população de rua em grandes e médios centros urbanos em todo o país, os Estados Unidos estão profundamente envolvidos nas grandes crises que marcaram a geopolítica mundial de 2024.
Washington tem participação indireta nas duas guerras atuais: a de Israel contra o Hamas e o Hezbollah e a da Rússia na Ucrânia. O governo norte-americano envia regularmente pacotes de ajuda militar aos exércitos israelense e ucraniano.
Mas enfrenta os obstáculos da opinião pública interna e externa cada vez mais contrária às ações de Israel no Oriente Médio, com o adicional do Irã, rival dos EUA, entrando na guerra. Sem falar no gargalo que se tornou o apoio financeiro a Kiev em um conflito que se encaminha para seu quarto ano sem perspectiva de um fim próximo.
O presidente russo, Vladimir Putin, não declarou preferência por um candidato ou outro, mas sabe que seu futuro depende mais dos eleitores norte-americanos do que dos russos. Durante a campanha dos EUA, disse, brincando, que apoiaria Kamala Harris, mas afirmou ter boa relação com Donald Trump, o que alimentou temores de que Trump ensaie uma reaproximação com regimes autocratas e ditadores.
As urnas dirão, mas o complexo sistema de apuração de votos deixa incerto quando o resultado virá. A apuração já começará no fechamento das urnas desta terça, mas cada estado tem seu sistema próprio, e os recordes de participação de eleitores --- o voto não é obrigatório no país --- na votação antecipada indica que a contagem pode demorar mais do que o normal.
