I am trying out Android about once a year, and this time I saw some improvements in usability, but I would still rate it 7/10. The initial experience of setting it up and a barrage of questions that I am 100% sure will confuse any non-tech person and just open all their data for Google to do what they want with it. Say what you want about Apple and its walled garden, Android is too customizable with too many options and bad default options for the user’s privacy and security. And no, I do not expect your non-tech granny to screw around with custom OS for the device 🫡

Wherever a Markdown editor has support for Mermaid (often through a plugin) this type of chart and diagrams will work. For those who do tables in Markdown, Mermaid's syntax will look familiar.
Plain text format means it will still be readable in 500 years time when Microsoft is long gone.

Many seem to forget that electric cars, windmills generating energy (whether electric or mechanical energy) are just not new ideas.
The difference is that the technology at the time was limited by what was known then. Today, we can make things work much more efficiently. With the networking of ideas, we are also able to exponentially improve what we know.
So many inventions have come about from society's need to solve challenges and problems. And yet so many ideas were violently resisted as well - remember when all cars had to be proceded by a person waving a flag, or where it was thought that steam locomotives would cause cows to stop producing milk, when we thought humans could not travel faster than they could run, when we were not made to fly, when we thought 5G cell towers were going to cause cancer, and so the list goes on and on.
Our biggest problem today is we are a society of buying everything - so things cost more, we lose our ability to fix and repair things, and then we panic that a new invention is going to take all the jobs away. In fact, new things (like just moving from horses to cars, or typewriters to computers) have created more new jobs after the transitions.
Society's difficulty is more one of not being willing to change, and today even more so, with the misinformation that is so popular.

Today I found two ginko fruits on my dog-walk ....Have you smelled them once? Uff...Quite a strange smell, reminds me of ripe noni fruit and kind of like vomit 🤔😆 So I collected the seeds and had to wash my hands a few times with soap to get rid of this smell....I'll probably plant them in a pot and see if they sprout 🌱 Ginko trees are so beautiful and magical 🌳 And their leaves are full of nutrients and medicine for our health!

Update on Core Lightning….i opened a second channel and made sure it wasn’t flagged as a private channel. Still can’t receive a Bolt12 payment, now the channel is offline and I haven’t got a clue as to what to do. The logs keep showing a “failed to broadcast notification .” What I thought was going to be cool has turned into a nightmare. Any CoreLightningNode runners around that can help me out. I just want to get the channel back up so I can close it and forget about it.
I am not running Damus in test flight (beta) rather I am using the iOS App Store version. The script when I run it does not toggle to 1 is stays at 0 which tells me it is not flipping the bit to toggle the icon back on.

I've seen people mention before that they'd like notifications for when certain npubs post to Nostr. Nostur on iOS does this already. For us Android folks, I'm assuming that this could be done with Pokey. Maybe @nprofile…vh28 could implement a subscription section, where you can add npubs to subscribe to, and you'd get notifications for when they create a new note. The technical hurdle here would be then subscribing to that npub's relays and watching them for new notes and having to do so for every npub that you're subscribing to, right? That doesn't sound efficient or battery friendly. Maybe another, better method exists?

Exclusive to the iPhone app is some clever use of the Dynamic Island. While you’re talking to Gemini, you’ll see icons in the Dynamic island indicating that Live is still active and whether it’s listening to you.
So far I've been Gemini the most useful for decent answers to things, including helping out with getting various code snippets sorted out. But it is pretty good for most things you'd ask of any smart speaker.
I see it can also be used to report road conditions and issues in Waze, something which I need to try instead of doing the three button presses on the car dashboard.

Introducing: npmnut - a simple "protocol" and cli-tool to advertise donation addresses and send donations to package developers!
The CLI tool parses your npm modules and looks for "npmnut" keys in their package.json files. These are supposed to be nprofiles of the developers. It then mints some Nuts from a preferred mint and sends them via DM to the developers of the package. Because sending tokens is quite lean, this works for direct dependencies and transitive dependencies and is quite fast.
I got inspired to build this by @npub1ye5…knpr! I hacked this together over the last few hours, so there is still a lot of work to be done. I'll publish the code in a repo later today.

Using a Pi Pico W for the brains, Rasic’s device can record, store and analyze the data from an arm cuff, stethoscope, electrocardiograph (ECG), and pulse oximeter. You can finally move your health data across Android devices - Can't believe this was not backed up before
Since Google had moved Health Connect (the service that each health and exercise app can optionally sync to on Android) into the main Android device menu, I just assumed it was part of the device backup (E2EE if needed). Now it turns out that this was never the case. If so, this is terrible design, and I can't imagine that Apple Health only exists on the user device with no sync or backup via Apple Cloud.
But OK, let's move on. It seems now that backup is available, it is also not on by default (you must activate the backup schedule), and no it is not going to back up as part of the Android device sync (it exports to a local file, and you must back that up). Again, what a clunky implementation.
When I activated mine, I got the option to save my backup file to Proton Drive, which is perfectly fine for me. So it will back up to cloud services that you have active on your device (and you can import from them too). The linked article also mentions Google Drive, so I'd imagine if that is active on your device, you may see that as an option.

Signal introduces convenient “call links” for private group chats up to 50 people with creating a group
Users can control who joins the secure group chats by requiring admin approval when a new join request is created, so the host can approve or decline them.
Nice to see such chats also have features like raising a hand button, emoji reactions, enhanced desktop call views, microphone and camera muting, switching video source, etc.
And it is cross-platform too, so this should make it really easy for everyone to use. What with Telegram defaulting to no E2EE and WhatsApp leaking metadata like a sieve, Signal has become an attractive private and secure option for most users. Yes I know all about Session, Threema and SimpleX (and I use all three) but I have no friends using them, so they are not yet a mainstream option really.

The lack of indicators of what is happening in #Bitcoin wallets & #Bitcoin services is really ridiculous. I am so glad many of the services & wallets are there, but the actual UX for many things is just trash. Having large amounts of money disappear for hours with no indication that anything is working is incredibly brutal the first time you use something. Having balances disappear from wallets because they have to "sync" everytime you click away from the wallet sucks too, especially when the "syncing" indicator says complete sometimes minutes before the balance shows back up.
I don't use Apple devices anymore, but one of the best apps I have ever used is LittleSnitch because it makes what are normally hidden processes visible. Proper indicators that make whatever the app does visible is the key to good UX.
There is immense value in showing how things work in a relatively simple fashion. I want things that show me the pipes in a beautiful way.

GM! Doc I need some #DocChain advice. I haven't ran a 5K in over two weeks 😭😭😭 I hurt my knee somehow. I don't remember twisting it or doing anything that hurt it. Two+ weeks ago it felt different laying in bed and the next morning it hurt bit. I ran a 5K that day. It hurt more that night. Next morning it was still not feeling 100%, but after moving around it was fine I thought. I could run without issue so I ran another 5K. That afternoon my knee really hurt and became really stiff. It was noticably bad. I haven't ran since. It doesn't hurt now, but it's a bit uncomfortable and gets stiff if I don't move it. It's odd. It feels like there's something stuck or pressure under the knee cap or on the side of my knee. Katie wants me to go get X-rays. I assumed I'm old and somehow hurt myself and it would be fine in a couple weeks. Thoughts? 😂👀

Not you have it backwards. I didn’t have much outgoing liquidity. My partner had the outgoing, so if the channel closed, the sats on his/her side would have gone back onchain. Then they’d be down liquidity on their node and need to find another partner to open with as well as would incur additional fees.
It would appear that they seized an opportunity when a route passed from their side (send side) to my side (routing through me) that pushed liquidity off their side of the channel (to my side) and then closed the channel.
When the channel closes, it sends whatever outgoing liquidity I had in the channel back onchain. Therefore it costs me sats when the channel closes which can’t be avoided, but it also costs me to open a new channel.
In the end, it’s not that big of a deal. But the right thing to do would have been to close the channel when all the outgoing was on their side if they were unhappy with the channel. They made the decision, they should have incurred the hit. Now my node is out of balance and I’ll be looking for a replacement channel. As well as I have to wait on the funds to settle back onchain.

While syncing: use Ethernet not WiFi. If that’s still too slow, and you’re using an older machine or raspberry pi, consider installing bitcoind (or whatever you’re using) on a faster machine to do the sync. Then move the data files to your current machine.

Interesting, I’ll watch this tonight. But right now, I think it’s uncomfortably likely. They don’t need to overpower the existing network. Once they have say 10 million to 14 million btc under control, they just start using a subset of nodes running their own validation filters. And only sending txns within their network. If they never spend to an unauthorized address then those coins are effectively lost to the existing/organic network. They use their own chain fork going forward. I guess the original network could keep going, but it would be stunted.

A new (to me) concern is that institutional/state control of a large percentage of utxo’s provides them an opportunity to use a subset of miners and effectively isolate those coins to their approved and kyc’d network. They just don’t broadcast txns outside their domain. A network fork I guess.
