- installed DAVx5-ose (free) on each profile via #Obtanium.
- connected each DAVx5-ose to her #NextCloud account on our home server.
- contacts.vcf is now not only backed up, but kept in sync across all profiles.

* this is actually a hack because Android 15 broke MMS messaging on secondary profiles. She now needs to switch to primary profile to send pics or respond to group msgs. (She's a homeschool Mom, so the group texting is a critical life function [LOL]). Annoying to have to do this, but workaround works so far--and returning to an Apple device would be like Sarah looking back to Sodom after having escaped its judgment.

YT videos are already well compressed and none of the transcoding makes them smaller at the same resolution. And yes, ffmpeg based solutions are much better
I can’t troubleshoot now, but from the experience with YT rips and trying to transcode them, usually makes them either bigger or corrupted. We’ve seen a fair share of such uploads in the past. You can try “curl -O <url>” and then use ffprobe to see what is going on with it. Usually it is either broken bframe or something to that tune. Uploading the direct YT download is the most optimal way to share them.
The US is fucked up.

I posted it because I think it's worth discussing. I find it interesting that these "glitches" seem to only go in one direction. Have you seen it go in the other direction? Not being sarcastic here but tone doesn't carry well online.
Second, I do think small scale fraud/cheating is possible and in an election that was as close as the last or this that can have big impacts. Last there are videos of people in leadership positions within dominion gloating about how they rigged things.
So could it be faulty hardware sure... could it be more ... I think so. I don't expect you to agree and that's life.

Some clown back in 1997. I won a 56K modem in a contest that I didn't even enter. I only had to pay shipping. Sweet! As a dumb teenager, I sent them my debit card information over email. I still don't get pubky/pkarr advantages over nostr, I have some dumb questions that might help me understand:
1- in the pkarr demo you can add key value pairs to you pkey, that is published to some resolver/node? How is that different from a nostr relay? Because we can also add any data to our profile metadata.
2- if I want to publish a "note", what do I do? Where do I publish it? Assuming i won't host anything myself.
3- related to 2, is there any format for the data?

That's the ideal scenario for sure, but there is the cold reality too.
The same way citizens are hostages of states, small landlock and buffer state countries are subject to foreign political and sometimes violence of regional powers.
Concerning the values of freedom, this is an unmistakable Western value. What these dumb people think is that being anti-west is equal to be anti-woke. To the contrary, being aligned with Western values is essentially being anti-woke, anticommunist, anti-nazist or any other form of oppression against the ultimate minority which is the individual.
So what enemies of the Western values does is to fund and promote stupid ideias within western countries (Nazism, communism, wokeism and radical Islamic groups). A big example of all of this is the famous and classic interview of Yuri Bezmenov in the 80's.
So, the only anchor we must have is our western values, everything alien to it is by definition our opposition.

Sad to see what’s happening in the Republic of #Georgia (Sakartvelo 🇬🇪💪).
I see many large bird app accounts talk about a US-imposed “color revolution” and other kinds of insanity who know nothing about the country but want to simp for Russian interests.
It was obviously a sham election.
Anyone who’s been to Georgia understands what’s at stake and just how different it is. Its young people are some of the most libertarian and capitalistic because it’s burned in their anti-Soviet mentality. Freedom is the counterculture.
In the late 1990s and through the early 2000s, the country was a libertarian paradise: low taxes, fast innovation, no corruption, and the ability to open businesses and trade within minutes. Most of the government ministers were Hayekians who quoted Milton Friedman and even Murray Rothbard. Free market reforms were quickly imposed and raised the standard of living lightning fast.
Bitcoin mining was already a big industry by 2014-2015, and they had a huge entrepreneurial class building crypto tools.
In the last decade, Russian money and influence has streamed in and slowly eroded all these market reforms to make it a client state of Putin.

I should have been doing this for a while now. We have so many political signs everywhere. I hate every single one of them. Now these are signs I can get behind.
The crazy part is if I look up what my weight should be based on my height and age, I’m still overweight by 7 pounds. That just seems crazy to me. If I get down to what “they” say is ideal, I’ll be at the same weight as when I graduated from high school, which was many many years ago.

Hate you have had a bad experience with lightning and with GetAlby. I think Lightning payments have real potential if Bitcoin is going to be used daily. There are plenty of hurdles left to clear, but see it as the best solution so far.
Just one thing to point out about your situation, you got 1m sats of liquidity for 18k sats fee. If you truly opened a channel for 1m sats, you’d have put up 1m sats. So from a cost standpoint, you’ve chosen the cheapest alternative.
Also I get that your main issue is you didn’t know it was going cost you 18k in sats. Maybe your notes about this will get more clarity in their workflow. If not, it will at least help others to be aware in the future. Have a good day.

Did you read any of the documentation or guides before jumping right in? When you open an inbound channel you have the option of multiple LSPs and it shows you the price before you commit to the channel open. It clearly says “Buy Channel” and shows the price so it’s not exactly like anything is being hidden from you.

Yeah, looks like you paid $10 to access the liquidity of a channel provider (Megalith) to give your node more inbound capacity. That wasn’t just to cover the on-chain fees. If you already had channels on your node you probably would not have needed to do that.
If you installed it on your own node there is no monthly fee to run it. The only fees you’d incur would be from any LSPs that you’re leasing a channel from. But if you already have existing channels, there’s no need to do that either.

For Alby Hub to work, you need a channel to send and receive funds. It was my understanding that if you already had established channels, then you wouldn’t need to open a channel for it to function. Sounds like you didn’t have any channels opened so your sats went to purchase liquidity rather than actually open a channel. What is your sending and receiving capability? I’d assume it’s more than 18k in sats. This may also be a monthly fee so you might check on that and get out now if you have no interest in Lightning.
My experience with Alby Hub has been completely different but I had a good idea about how it worked before installing it. I loaded it on a second node and opened a channel from my primary node to the Alby Hub Node and it the only thing it cost was the channel opening fees.

Considering that most exchange/swap services offer shitcoins, at least providing an easy and private platform to exchange crypto for Bitcoin (for anyone who’s gained the understanding of why they should) is a good thing.
Maybe there’s a “middle way” where the messaging can emphasize Bitcoin, or link to articles for users who might be looking education.
Example: new user hears that there’s an opportunity to accept crypto for their charity campaign, not knowing the difference. The setup could default to Bitcoin, or even offer to accept any crypto and auto-swap into Bitcoin, with a link or tooltip as to why it’s the best money for their campaign (ethical, un-censorable, no leader/decentralized, etc) and could leave open the free-market option to choose a different currency (even fiat?) if desired.
It would create an opportunity to “feed the good” without (I assume) requiring a technical overhaul, or preventing inexperienced-but-well-meaning customers from discovering the product (and even being steered in the right direction once they sign up). My two sats ⚡️

Philosophically, I get your point (and kind of agree: shitcoiners gonna shitcoin). On the other hand, in terms of personal responsibility, I would want the things I touch, if I have control over them, to feed a trajectory of net positive for humanity, which the vast majority of shitcoining is not.
Someone collecting donations for a worthy cause, but in crypto? Idk, it’s tricky. Perhaps they can help a lot of people with that money before it goes to zero. But feeding into a system of scams comes with additional negative externalities that could be largely avoided if their only option was Bitcoin.

I think most of it is very easy to implement in Nostr but the real layer which is missing is a way for machine learning to pick which notes to display based on user activity and engagement. That’s buildable and a lot easier/cheaper than it was when TikTok or even IG reels were developed. But we have no way to bundle up user engagement data and send it to a trusted algorithm service. We could do a DVM or custom relay to display the content based on the algorithm service.
The other issue to address is that TikTok and its clones are very optimized for performance with incredible low latency uptime. You need a good CDN and really optimized clients.
Some of us might be thinking why we are living in such irrational times. Well, my thought about it is pretty extensive and I am using this note as a placeholder for a future article or essay about it. But Emilio Gentile summarized it perfect in this passage from his book **Politics as Religion**:

Can send from primary, so not a carrier issue.
Can send individual SMS. If she tries to send an MMS, it gets stuck on "sending..." and SMS messages also stop. She deletes the stuck MMS message, and the othe SMS messages go through.
Tried both stock SMS app and Google messages with RCS enabled. Refreshed/reinstalled/installed new eSIM more than once.

What’s the gist?
The site argues that financial institutions have partnered with the federal government to devise a monetary system that allows both parties to exploit the American people. While this is not news to bitcoiners who have spent countless hours learning about the monetary system, the Monetary Justice site makes it easy for anybody to grasp this concept in ten minutes or less. I think the simplicity of its message has the potential to wake up a lot of people.
It proposes a framework that essentially asserts that all modern repressive monetary systems have these five characteristics in common:
1) Currency Creation
2) Currency Inflation
3) Currency Compulsion
4) Currency Confinement
5) Currency Control
To institutionalize an exploitative monetary system, federal politicians, in cooperation with the banking sector, have codified these five repressive characteristics into law (the site lists these laws). And while each law on its own may be constitutional, taken together they are indicative of something called cumulative unconstitutionality. According to the site, “Cumulative unconstitutionality refers to the concept that a series of individually constitutional laws or policies can collectively become unconstitutional when their combined effect infringes on fundamental rights or violates constitutional principles."
The case is made that the monetary system is unjust and unconstitutional, and that Americans should neither abide nor accept it. Rather, we should use our greatest strengths to peaceably, but actively, resist and reform it. Those strengths are a federalized government with independent state governments (which are also unduly burdened by current monetary policy), and a constitution that exists to prevent the federal government from encroaching on citizens’ rights to life, liberty, property, speech, and self-governance; all of which are diminished by the U.S. federal monetary system.
The whole site right now is only about 4 pages, so the whole thing can be read in one quick pass. 100% worth it, IMO.

Just signed up for a seminar titled….Cryptocurrency Insight: Evolution, Impacts, and Future Adoption. Will attend in person so I can see if the presenter knows lightning payments and will see if I can get a demonstration added into the presentation if not already being done.
