One challenge I’ve found is integrating persistent mobile login on a web-app for iOS that doesn’t have terrible UX
I don’t want to handle keys and there isn’t an Amber equivalent on iOS yet
So my workaround has been to not require login at all and just give people links generated by my own key
I could add some logic like:
“IF logged in, then user uploads must be signed by user; ELSE, sign event on user’s behalf with gifbuddy key”
Then make a new page for logged-in users to see their own uploaded content
Is that what you had in mind?

I think we've hit what Seth Godin calls "The Dip"
Nostr may never be a replacement for Twitter/X, but it is amazing, and opens up a whole world of possibilities.
I see it as the social / identity / marketplace layer for Bitcoin... and a decentralised communications layer for other apps.
The work on Cashu is a testament to this... Nutzaps, P2PK locking of tokens to npubs show how Nostr can enable decentralized payments.
I can send you sats locked to your identity without you even having a lightning address in your Nostr profile.
We are barely scratching the surface of what Nostr's use cases.
I feel the same. I think we've all finally realized Nostr sucks and no one is coming, really.
We built all this giant piece of something that turns out no one really understands or cares, not even most Nostr developers.

This is the worst answer because people will stop running this database if it gets filled with garbage since they're not being paid to run it at all.

What if instead of writing a note that you either want to edit later or delete you instead write a note in "publishing client" that then generates a nostr client renderable URL and it's that URL that gets sent as a note.
You don't know it's a URL because you just see the rendered note in the nostr client.
If I go back and edit the note in my publishing client the URL remains unaffected but the next time someone looks at my note what renders is the edited content of that very same URL? Think of it like the URLs from @nprofile…5787 's GifBuddy: You don't see the URL you just see the rendered gif naively as a note like this

This would probably necessitate that you have to keep your own dedicated hard drive space for the notes or may leverage something like blossom.

Yeah! Many are external to Nostr too, visits to the web nostr clients and some are from the PFPs that are used by different web based software that read Nostr profiles. Nostr is growing 🔥

My 2024 review and high-level report. Let's start with some stats for the nostr.build:
- 720 Million media requests served
- 650 TiB of bandwidth consumed
- 8 Million unique visitors
- 85% average cache hit rate
- Improved median CPU time per request from 200 down to 2 milliseconds per request
- 20 requests per second are served on average
- 99.994% uptime for the hosted media
- 98% uptime for the website and uploading servers
- 2.5K daily free uploads on average
Some improvements for the free uploads:
- Increased free upload size from 10MiB to 50MiB
- Increased image resolution from 1980px to 3840px
- Increased per server RAM from 1GiB to 4GiB
- Added full mirror of all uploaded media to the additional vendor (backup)
- Implemented moderation headers (can be used to hide NSFW content if desired)
Now some of the stats of my dev work for the nostr.build:
- 1,333 git commits
- 42 repositories with my contributions
- 10k+ lines of code written, or changed
Some features and completed projects:
- Rewritten nostr.build account page (AI, stats, nostr share, drag-n-drop, variaty of sizes, poster for video, etc.)
- Added AI Studio, onboarded multiple models from SD and Flux.
- Added media statistics
- Rewritten media serving front-end (dropping CPU utilization by 100x) and improving TTFB as well as cache hit rate (from 50%+ to 85%+ on average)
- Implemented variaty of the spam, and other illegal media upload prevention mechanisms (automated AI media scanner, PhotoDNA scanner, etc.)
- Implemented AI Moderation API that is shareable with other nostr media hosts (e.g., nostrcheck.me)
- Implemented upload of pdf, zip, etc., with full virus scanning.
- Various improvements to the PHP code, bug fixes and optimizations.
- Implemented e.nostr.build to allow easy embedding and sharing of the video/audio files for the account holders
- Referal links and account credits
- Onboarded more nostr clients for uploads (e.g., YakiHonne)
Some of the prototyping I've done for nostr.build:
- Semantic search of the media (ML based), multilingual
- Basic search for media using AI Vision
- Video transcoding using serverless and server-based setups
- Video transcoding to DASH/HLS (CMAF)
- Multi-party audio/video chat
Some of the in-flight projects that I'll have to complete in 2025:
- Seamless implementation of the Blossom protocol (70% done)

What do you think about an event kind for "read" that could be sent automatically whenever a user reads something? Probably not worth doing for notes, but for stuff like videos, podcast episodes, songs, articles, recipes etc that could be powerful material if a user wants some algorithm to detect what they see more and use that information to craft custom feeds on their behalf. @npub1utx…50e8

Nostr needs key rotation like Bluesky, where you can rotate your compromised client key using your compromised master key to a new key, all by just clicking buttons that will instruct a compromised cloud server to perform signatures that no one will ever see and that no other user will ever check.
Without that it will remain an absolute joke.
The Kind 10050 could be fetched for the user and if no event comes back that means they can't receive NIP-17 DMs, so you can then default to NIP-04.

I would love more education on the different apps that connect and how to use them. Maybe it's available, but I'm not sure where to look or who to ask.
My short experience with Nostr so far:
The general vibe here is just so much better! If someone is killing my vibe I can mute them. No crap fiat ads that make me feel bad about myself or peak my anxiety. Also, quality content that is shared is rewarded in a natural and personal way with zaps and comments and reposts.
Why Nostr is struggling…
There is too much of an overlap with X, not only in the feature sets among the primary applications, but more importantly, in the kind of audience that Nostr is catering to.
Sure..censorship resistance at the protocol level is a differentiator, but the to the average person, you may as well be talking gibberish. They don’t know wtf a protocol is in the first place - let alone why it matters for censorship resistance to happen at that level, or more importantly, WHY they should trust Nostr to deliver on that promise. “Bcoz @npub1sg6…f63m said so” is not an argument.

Bluesky is a case in point here.
It’s got a VERY similar feature set to X, claims to be open source / censorship resistant (similar narrative to Nostr), and is growing MUCH faster than Nostr, bc it has captured a key audience, ie; people with TDS and EDS (Elon Derangement Syndrome).

I’ve been on there a few times, and the content quality is enough to make you want to throw up….but at the very least, it’s working for that kind of content, and for the people who want it.
I don’t have a direct answer here..but I think it’s something to do with the over-emphasis on technicals.
@npub1az9…m8y8 mentioned increasing the emphasis on design the other day. I agree this is a move in the right direction. We’re taking a very design-focused approach with @npub15xd…t3l3 (we’ll have ALOT more to show in the next 6wks).
That being said, it’s not enough.
IMO, Nostr is technically mature enough for us to go out there and talk about it to more people, and build a narrative BEYOND the 500 of us that are talking to each other on here.
People like @npub1l2v…ajft or @npub1der…xzpc can correct me if I am wrong here. Maybe there’s alot more to do technically.
But if I am right, I’d like to see more initiatives that are marketing oriented being supported by @npub17xv…c9as and @npub10pe…n34f and other coalitions. Maybe we even need a council of Nostr businesses, who together pool some funds to help drive some marketing initiatives?
Whatever the case, we need to expand upon the Nostr narrative, make it more compelling and speak to more people about it.
At the very least, we have to conquer then Bitcoiners. If we can’t get the segment who are into freedom money onto the freedom of speech network, we’re DOA. That’s a first step.
I know @npub1hz5…tysa is working on a very cool initiative in relation to this. The Nostr Booth is IMO a great way to make Nostr more “real” for bitcoiners by having a physical presence at all the conferences.
I know @npub1utx…50e8 + @npub180c…h6w6 are doing some Podcast outreach. That’s super important too. @npub16vr…p2va and crew are putting on Nostriga. Amazing. @npub16c0…6nvr / @npub12vk…pugg are doing great things with @npub1spd…q6j7, etc on the content side. I’ve got some things up my sleeve personally which I will begin to do once @npub15xd…t3l3 is in a position to represent a NEW kind of Nostr-product..
But we need MOAR..
And…we also need to find another angle that is NOT about censorship resistance. That’s clearly not working against X.
I don’t know the EXACT narrative or spin, but it has to be more “running towards” than “running from”.
More white pill, less black pill.
Anyway.
I will probably turn this into an article. I’ve been thinking more and more about “writing in public” as we build Satlantis, and sharing more about how we’re thinking about growing a “network product” on top of a “network protocol”.

I've been spending too much time on x lately, and I've noticed that the posts there have become overwhelmingly negative. Constantly seeing that kind of content isn't good for my mental health.
That's why I've decided I'm going to start spending more time on nostr instead. I want to fill my mind with more positive and uplifting content. Nostr feels like a healthier space where I can interact with people and discover new ideas without all the negativity.
It's important to be selective about the online spaces we inhabit and the information we consume. Protecting our mental wellbeing should be a priority. I'm looking forward to a more positive online experience on nostr.

The tiny blocksize makes sure that Bitcoin stays decentral. If you raise the blocksize, Bitcoins blockchain would grow too fast, requiring more storage, which could get really expensive, which would lead to the point that running a fullnode would centralize to less and rich entities. Currently, a 1TB SSD is enough to store the whole Bitcoin blockchain.

And we should think about why Blockstream pays most of the Core developers, is against scaling of Bitcoin (its 2024 and we still have tiny blocksize) in order to sell their own L2, Liquid network where they collect all the fees...
This needs to be addressed in the community, now.
I feel like these new Bitcoin L2s can never go anywhere, even those that aren't scams, because they are tied to companies and centrally controlled, even if not strictly custodial. This is probably valid for Ethereum L2s too, zk-rollups and whatnot.
If you're an external individual or company you shouldn't really be investing time and energy and your brand into a thing that is just another company with zero network-effect. You would have to be part of that growing network-effect and you shouldn't do that organically and for free (this is probably why these things always do a lot of "partnerships"), and we need that organic stuff for Bitcoin to work.

Reliance on single-sig keys for using Nostr clients is scary to me. "Not your keys, not your Nostr identity/reputation"... it seems threshold keys in particular could be very powerful for using with bunkers for signing Nostr events

Just like 99% of people throw the tags with the barcodes away when they bring a product home. And I don't think we're talking about the end consumer here, an nproduct ID could be used by the Supply Chain to track materials and the manufacturing, shipping and distribution process of a product or service. If we could get this worked out, it could be a huge part of a global VAT system.
When people open an item I sent them, they look at it and use it and throw the package away. On the off chance someone tries the QR code and are directed to NOSTR, their reaction as a normies will be "wtf is this" and leave. No one does the 2nd step to get an NPub. If they are normies is what I'm saying.

You've laid it out perfectly. It is as simple as that. Clients and relays can choose the minimum.
I want to work on an NIP for this.
I like the idea, interesting to think about. Simple enough to get widespread adoption:
If you have "proof of stake" in a BTC wallet, lets say 100ksat, then sign your npub with the wallet private key and post the pubkey and signed message to your profile, then if someone steals your nostr nsec you can sign a new npub with the same wallet, then your identity follows your cold sats rather than an nsec that has to be hot.
If you want to shut down your profile, just spend the sats to another wallet.
If an identity misbehaves, you can ban the wallet address so they can't just create a new npub and keep spamming you. If they move their funds to a new wallet, well then they just paid a transaction fee to create a new identity.
Now your client and/or relay can set a "minimum identity stake" so you only are talking to people that are serious.
Sounds complex but possible. I don't know bitcoin tech enough to say much else.
But then, on top of running a free open relay, you are running a free moderation engine. Who will pay this?
I see this as an identity problem in general rather than a Nostr relay problem. If you can ban an npub, that person can create another one. We need to ban the person or an AI that's posting.
Worldcoin offers a solution to scan all the unique humans on Earth to solve this problem along with the human vs AI problem. But there are 8 billion people on earth. And Worldcoin accounts are as cheap as $20. It doesn't solve the identity problem in my opinion. Plus, not everyone will scan their eyeballs.
I think we should identify people based on the most scarce possession on Earth. Bitcoin.
I want to propose "Proof of Bitcoin". If you ban a Bitcoin balance, its much much harder for a scammer or an illegal content poster to save enough bitcoin to post again.

Minimum 5 "custodians" required to liquidate the mint. Not foolproof but if custodial members were rotated yearly it adds a lot of complexity and effort to collude.
We use it to settle debts between ourselves among my siblings, and a couple trusted friends. I run a mint (separate liquidity from my main personal LN node), I'm not a scammer, and the folks who I've onboarded & use it all know where I live 😉
From my perspective, it's just a deferred settlement pattern, and up to them when they choose to redeem or leave my mint. Privacy doesnt really matter for us, it's the speed and simplicity we like.
Some of us still use lightning by itself most of the time, but that's not as easy to onboard without using impersonal 3rd parties, or getting your hands dirty
The basic idea is that we will need a custodial solution because we may not be able to scale lightning to 8 billion people. Using these e-cash “banks” is currently our best approach. The protocol is much more efficient und quicker than lightning. It has the advantage that the custodians (mints) can not identify who is paying, I.e. they can’t censor a single user. In that respect it is more private than custodial lighting. Still, there remains a risk of rugpulls since the underlying lightning bitcoin is held centrally as with any custodial solution.

eCash is useful for many things. First of all, the token is the money. Which means you can send money offline, for example, just by sharing a string or QR code (or tapping phones via NFC / Bluetooth / whatever).
