That's good thinking, but again that should be at a client level, not the protocol level. If a particular community want to develop an app based on the idea that they know best who their members should or should not see, they can build and maintain it. We don't need and I don't think most of us would want to give up that control.
However, that does identify a need for private groups, where a specific set of people can speak freely on specific topics without being exposed to the rest of the world. One of the biggest drivers of growth for Facebook and Twitter was the difference in how they handled privacy. On Twitter, now X, everything is public. But Facebook created private groups where people could organize and actually conduct business, making decisions with internal consensus rules or governance that worked for them. This is a separate topic than Mute or Block, but it is a critical piece of how socialedia has evolved over the last few decades that Nostr needs to catch up with. Even X is trying communities, although they seem to be crap like everything else on there.

The only thing that government has to do, indeed the only thing that they have ever had to do, is balance their budgets. Taxes should fund spending, year after year. Need more spending? Raise more taxes. People don't like taxes? Lower spending. Keeping it balanced is the only goal.
When things get our of balance, the entire world goes to crap. Go out of balance year after year, decade after year, and there's a crap storm. That's what we are facing now. If a government ever decides to balance their budget and exist within the taxable revenue streams of their citizens, those citizens will be happy and they will thrive. Too bad we have zero examples of that right now, anywhere.

I think the minute that Primal has private group feeds that work well across multiple major Nostr apps, none of the corporate social media platforms will stand a chance. I have MANY friends who are interested, but are turned off by the global visibility of everything they post. We have 1:1 Messages, but what we need are group messaging that is secure from anyone outside the designated list of viewers.
Most people are leaving FB, X and others looking for a place to talk to their friends, their tribe, their circle. As soon as Nostr can deliver on that, everything else will collapse and go completely ghost town.

Me: Sure you can. Just start posting and building a network of follows and followers. It's a level playing field.
Friend: It would be intermingled with the general population though.. which is primarily BTC focused.. I can see conflict of interest issues arising from me attempting to build a fiat based community by posting to recruit members for our community there.
Me: no, it's a level playing field. why hide the fact that you're trying to build a revenue stream and portfolio balance using diverse security investments to drive a snowball into a giant? There is no conflict here.
Friend: So you’re saying if I were to advertise a new fiat based, dividend themed community in the general population chat, that is primarily focused on BTC and cryptocurrencies (a community that is already against all things fiat), they wouldn’t attack what I’m trying to do? Because I see it daily on all other social media.
Me: Some individuals might laugh, some might post something stupid. That just means those profiles are not worth your time, and you mute them and move on. People who appreciate the content will interact with it in a positive manner.
The only reason that Nostr is so flooded with Bitcoin posts is because that's the majority of the userbase. But at the same time, the devs are whining because the network isn't growing very fast, and the truth is we all bring our own networks with us, and build new ones from the ground up in whatever social media platform we use. People are people, let them be stupid if they want. Don't let it stop you.
Friend: I can respect that.. I guess the question is whether I want to put myself through the aggravation of sorting through the negativity to find the small percentage of positivity for my cause.
Me: I think the level of aggravation comes from the way the app works more than the people. If it's super easy to mute idiots, then we can move on without too much stress. If they keep coming back or the platform itself hits us with bs, that's where the real negativity is.
I hate FB because their algorithm is out of control. I hate X because their notification system is broken and I can't see who is interacting with my posts and comments. I don't hate the people.
And I have dealt with some people on Nostr who say "can you put your dividend posts under a different profile so I don't have to deal with them? and my answer was just "no, this is me, deal with it".
Friend: It’s still an option.. the frustrating part right now for me is that we have built something so great on Facebook, with such a good group of people.. and now facebook decides to go on offensive mode and start attacking us, when there are far worse things being shared there (porn, etc). But the thought of trying to convince everyone to move off of it completely is exhausting.
Me: I have not bee posting much about dividends on Nostr, but only because I don't have a network built that welcome the posts. So that's what I'm trying to build, slowly.
Friend: They (corporate social media) allow the filth, but attack US for sharing and promoting legit content. I can’t tell you how many times I have reported legit porn on Facebook, only to get a response back, saying it “does not violate their terms of service”.
Me: Yep, same.
And to be honest, I do believe that Bitcoin is the future monetary foundation whether we like it or not, and you can confirm that I haven't been hiding that very much.
Lesson for Nostr: People are coming. Prepare yourselves. If you can't be positive, leave it alone. Don't like the posts coming from a profile? Ignore them. Unfollow if you want to, mute them if you have to. But lets build this protocol into a global system where everyone is welcome. Because if we don't, corporates will drink our milkshake.

I've tried sending to my Strike wallet, doesn't work. Tried sending to my Primal wallet, doesn't work. Even tried doing a copy/paste of a LN Invoice from the Strike app, and Coinbase claimed it was invalid.
And of course Lightspark is not on Nostr to tag, so they're not actually serious about Lightning.

Has anyone built a nostr app that can support the Buy Nothing groups, with gives and asks for stuff we want to give away to neighbors? Given the global reach this might be tough to narrow down the location, but I think it would be a way to draw that market into Nostr. Especially with zaps allowing people to pay for goods and services with Bitcoin.

Investigative journalism should be celebrated, not punished. I find it interesting, but it doesn't negate from what @npub180c…h6w6 built and what the other devs are building. If it bothers people and keeps them away from Nostr for a while, that's on them, not the system. It's certainly not on us.
Doesn't matter to me. I may disagree with him on 90% of issues, but I like what he built and I hope it destroys all challengers and defeats the corporate networks over the next 5-10 years.

"Progressive" is a subjective label. It means different things to different people. So of course we can't be "progressive" and a "bitcoiner", at least not when the definitions of those terms in the minds of the person making the statement don't seem to jive.
It would be really nice to have deep level conversations about what labels mean before we start pushing the narrative that this or that person is the very model of a modern major ... whatever.

The first step on that path would be to allow government agencies to take any excess budget at the end of the fiscal year and invest it instead of counting it against their budget for the next cycle. They could use some of it to buy Bitcoin, and some to invest in interest earning securities that would help them with their expenses in the future. The interest earned would be counted against their budget for the next cycle, not the total balance of the accounts.

Let the entry with the longest history become the 'primary' entry for the topic, leaving the others to be found in the history. I'm thinking in terms of how the Bitcoin blockchain operates, where ~ every 10 minutes a hash function is confirmed and the next block is established. Maybe every hour the wiki system runs a hash function and locks down the content on each page, and the link to the version of the page with the longest history of hash confirmations becomes the destination for any links looking for that page. If no change, no hash function operations are needed so the system saves resources by not running it. More active pages might accelerate the frequency to prevent too much branching.
I'm just brainstorming. While collaboration is critically important, what matters is whether a page and its content are secured and not subject to branching and manipulation. The communications related to trying to get a page or article content agreed by all parties would need to be a "talk page", similar to how Wikipedia does it, but more formalized and in the open. I would love it if someone would put together an instance of Apache Wave for this that works on Nostr. Loved that system.

I'm in a lot of investing groups/chats/etc. When someone tells me that they are buying $50k in t-bills because they are earning a 5.40% annualized interest rate, I just shake my head. Inflation from currency devaluation is 3X what CPI is, so they're losing capital by investing in any dollar based security. I'll invest in stocks and funds with a proven historical rate of return higher than 15%, but I won't touch anything that is dollar denominated. Why invest in something where the floor is eroding faster than we can build?

Balancing lost keys with new coin over time might work pretty well. But that's not the choice that was made when Bitcoin was finalized. It will take until around 2040 before the transaction fees regularly exceed the block rewards, and we'll still have a hundred years for the miners to get 100% of their earnings from the fees. I think looking long term there won't be any danger to stability.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not dumping on Monero or the people using it. I'm just choosing not to.
