NB hysteroscopy is widely used - it's not exclusive to IVF. I've had one to check for polyps. It was horrendously painful.
There is no reason why doctors couldn't administer a local anaesthetic before they did the hysteroscopy.

Animals have a greater conception of death than we give them credit for.
Years ago, family friends had a dog and 4 cats. The oldest of the cats was dying, and every evening they'd get home to find the cat hadn't managed to eat its food, but the other animals hadn't touched it (even though the old cat was way beyond the point where he could have defended his food).
Then they came home one evening to find a very subdued, sad looking collection of animals - the old cat had finally died. But they were subdued and pragmatic. They'd finally eaten the bowl of food - it was as if they knew he didn't need it any more.

In theory eggs bought in the UK should not need refrigerating, because they're not washed prior to packing, though I can see you might not want to do that if your kitchen is very hot..
Eggs come out the chicken covered in a lipid coating (stops the moisture evaporating through the shell while the chick incubates).
So long as you don't wash the lipid coating off, they should keep at pantry temperature.
If (because you're a bit squeamish about chicken shit on the shells) you wash them, then you wash off the lipid coating, and they do need to be kept in the fridge. American food standards require washing before packing, hence eggs bought in America have to be kept in the fridge (and don't keep anywhere near as long).

Watch the Royal Society Christmas Lectures if it's still on i-player. I got to see the guy who gave it give a "grown up" version as a talk.
AI is not *intelligent.* It's better thought of as a hugely souped-up version of the predictive text on your phone. Based on the prior probabilities of "what will follow word A (which in turn follows B which follows C... etc)" it makes a weighted guess (based on its training data) as to what the next word will be.
There is no cognition, no checking for internal consistency, no fact checking, no sources referenced - because it's not doing any of the things a human does when they summarise a text. It's just giving probabilistically weighted guesses as to what the next word in a sentence will be, given the preceding words. It's sophisticated enough that the depth it goes back into "past words" will throw up some relatively high weightings if the string of past words includes technical terms or proper names, so it's likely to get, say, a request for a biography of Henry VIII roughly right. But a biography of a relatively unknown person who isn't widely discussed may be wildly off the mark.

One of the best comments I've seen about sacred casts was Bill Maher, talking about trans ideology and paedophilia.
He quoted an interview with a famous bank robber: "Fred, why do you rob banks? Because that's where the money is."

My local vets (used to be great) has been bought out by Linnaeus.
When Cat was taken ill - turned out to be lymphoma - I felt they tried to put me under enormous pressure to try all sorts of heroic (and vastly expensive) chemotherapy.
I had to really stick to my guns: "No, she hates the vet, she hates injections, her quality of life matters more than eking out a few extra months by terrifying her with twice weekly injections and transfusions. Palliative care only, then PTS."
I'm strongly thinking of changing to one of the few independent vets left in the area.

Just for context, goalkeeping is a bit like basketball - height is a massive advantage.
Football goals are 8' high and 8 yards (24') wide. I can't reach the cross bar from standing. It used to take two of us to hang the nets, me with my mate L sitting on my shoulders.
6' is not an unusual height for a man (in fact, I think with better nutrition, the average male height among 20 to 40 year olds in England is currently about 5'11"). It's a very unusual height in women. A fairly crap 6' goalie will have an advantage over, say, a 5'8" very athletic, very talented goalie.
He will also be able to kick the ball a lot further - watch men's versus women's top flight football. Even at international level, when a woman takes a goal kick it usually lands in her own half. A man will get it comfortably into the opposition half.

My recollection is that the decisions weren't even necessarily being made by the governments (whether left or right). A lot of countries, including the UK, had had to seek bailouts from the IMF, and quite often the IMF would attach stringent conditions including privatisation of nationally owned industries.
(This continues, in one form or another, to this day. For instance, developing countries often can't access aid unless they're prepared to privatise their water industries. Water is something I feel should be run by the state - it's interesting that in the USA, often held up as a beacon of neoliberalism, water companies tend to be publicly owned. The US seems to treat water as a "public good" in the economist's sense.)

It's a supply and demand thing.
The only thing which will stop spec builders and estate agents racketeering is swamping the market with so many council houses (coupled with removing the "right to buy") that they can't find anyone willing to pay stupid money any more.
Every measure supposedly designed to make it easier for buyers to get on the ladder (raising stamp duty thresholds, abolishing stamp duty for first time buyers, "shared" ownership) just means prices spiral upwards as estate agents hike the prices by exactly the amount the new government policy has (on paper) given to buyers.
And shared ownership sucks - there's all sorts of rules around the way the equity held by the corporate part of the ownership is allowed to appreciate which means that the owner-occupier's share rarely goes up in line with house price inflation - in other words, you can find yourself worse off and owning proportionately less of the house than when you started. (I'm not sure if this is true of all shared ownership schemes, but I've heard some right horror stories.)

The only vaguely acceptable substitute for actual pasta I've come up with (when I've been trying to go low-carb) is finely shredded Savoy cabbage. Obviously it's not like pasta in the slightest, but it tastes okay, retains its crunch when cooked and goes quite well with a nice ragu.

* Free healthcare for under 16s
* State subsidised childcare
* Decent, enforceable equal pay legislation to protect women in the workplace.

* Offer free IVF to the small minority of people struggling with infertility.

Toby Young demonstrates that he is too thick to understand a law which has been on the statutes for over 50 years, and which even had a mainstream film made about it.
It's always been "Equal pay for work of equal value." The whole point of the Ford Dagenham case was that the women machinists making the seat covers were doing work of equal value to the men in the paint shop - both groups similarly skilled, without whose labour there wouldn't have been an end product.
There have been plenty of cases since then - e.g. the cleaners/ bin men case in Birmingham (they were on the same pay scale, but the men were eligible for bonuses and the women weren't).

I tried my hand at salmon poaching once as a kid but I was too crap at fishing to catch anything. My one and only attempt at fly fishing.

I spent many years of my life playing women's football - both in university and as a Sunday league player.
I also used to play mixed five-a-side (which is non-contact, and being on a smaller pitch, irons out some of the advantage from difference in speed) and I can tell you first hand how much stronger men are. I have clusters of burst veins on my legs from tissue damage from blocking (entirely legitimate, within the rules) shots on goal from men. I have none from doing the same against women.
There are no words for how angry this makes me.

Someone can be incredibly intelligent in their own very narrow field of expertise and a complete idiot outside of it.
In fact, after a lengthy career working mainly with people who were incredibly intelligent in their own very narrow field, I would say this is very, very common.
We need something akin to Dunning-Kruger (which is the phenomenon in psychology where the worse someone is at something in reality, the more they themselves think they're brilliant at it). In this case it would be where the more brilliant someone is at one thing, the more likely they are to talk shite across the rest of the board, while asserting their own brilliance.
Perhaps "Auto-Appeal-to-Authority".
