Animals have a greater conception of death than we give them credit for.
Years ago, family friends had a dog and 4 cats. The oldest of the cats was dying, and every evening they'd get home to find the cat hadn't managed to eat its food, but the other animals hadn't touched it (even though the old cat was way beyond the point where he could have defended his food).
Then they came home one evening to find a very subdued, sad looking collection of animals - the old cat had finally died. But they were subdued and pragmatic. They'd finally eaten the bowl of food - it was as if they knew he didn't need it any more.
