I got a ChatGPT account a few weeks back. The motivation was not one I expected:
Earlier this year, I was struggling to settle my insurance claim for last June's hit-and-run collision. I spoke with a few lawyers. They were courteous and gave me a few tips, but ultimately declined to take my case. The expected payouts would be too small. So pro se it was.
Then I realized that both my insurance and the third-party adjuster were using generative AI to handle my claim. Their replies came back too quick, too similar. So I realized I had to step up my game.
I started feeding the system my policy and police report, then some of the correspondence, looking for leverage. It identified a few of leads. Some were hallucinations, but a couple were strong enough to file complaints with California Department of Insurance.
Their mistakes, and the clarity the system provided was enough to put the likely settlement into a range where lawyers became interested. So now I hope I can hand off everything to a professional.
So I guess the lawyers came out ahead, but if it helps close this chapter, I'm all for it.

At this point in my life, having been well-acquainted with anarchist collectives, nonprofit boards, community groups, corporate management, labor unions and legislative bodies, I feel like one of the biggest barriers to progress is that people just don't know how to make collective decisions.
I've meet groups of people with little formal education that can run circles around otherwise sophisticated, cosmopolitan urban decision makers when it comes to what to do, how and when. So many of the latter end up either traumatized by the experience and/or create hierarchies, whether formal or informal.
My theory is that collective decision making is a skill that we've effectively lost in modern society. We're told what to do at home as kids, at school as students, and at work as adults and end up stunted. We can't express our desires, our needs, we can't dialogue and we can't compromise.

Yet another person was killed crossing the street this morning—once again by a professional driver behind the wheel of a large vehicle.
It happened at Parnassus Avenue and Stanyan Street, a transit corridor in one of San Francisco's nicest and supposedly safest neighborhoods.
This city will go and recall elected officials over "out-of-control" crime. Hundreds of my neighbors have applied for concealed carry weapons permits to defend themselves. "Public safety" remains the top issue this election.
Meanwhile, actual, deadly, traffic violence gets the San Francisco version of "thoughts and prayers".

So the SF Chronicle has "sole" endorsed Lurie. While their criticisms of Breed and Farrell are straightforward, their critique of Safaí for wanting to hire unionized workers to build housing and of Peskin for being too much of a negotiator seem a bit misplaced, especially considering how forgiving they are of Lurie’s lack of experience.

Here at the San Francisco consulate, the lines to vote in today's Mexican elections loop around the corner. Hundreds of people at noon. If you weren't "registered" to vote, there's no guarantee they'll let you cast a ballot since only 1,500 unregistered people can vote.

It was only halfway down the second page that I found anything of substance, but from 2022. It is almost like actual content is getting petrified.

Visiting the farmer's market today inspired me: Nopal tacos with Hodo tofu and avocado. The flowering cilantro tasted great, but the stems were a bit too woody for my taste.
But for real, I don't get why nopales aren't featured in more cuisines. They're delicious, healthy weeds that grow almost anywhere.

Even though I understand that for the vast majority of people it is a completely commonplace thing that happens, I do not think I will ever really accept how slaughterhouses and meat eating are normalized. The idea of raising millions of animals from birth, helping them grow and thrive to then take them somewhere to be industrially killed in an assembly line will forever be absurd to me.

I was surprised at the lack of budget monitors at brick and mortar stores here in SF. They focus on devices at the higher end of the spectrum. Best Buy gave me the option to order it to their store, but it was more expensive and took longer than Amazon. Costco and Central Computer didn't have much either.

Unfortunately, it is too reflective to be much use during the day, so I've been looking to replace it for a while. They're not doing it though, because the issue isn't just about being "cancelled"", it is also about having an audience that is forced to pay attention. I did not realize that jackals were so small. They only weigh 6–13 kg, which means @npub1fg0…7zxs, at 8.5 kg, is in their weight class.

Also, Sandboxed Google Play is such a useful tool. Haven't used it much yet, but I appreciate that #GrapheneOS makes it an option. It expands the number of apps and makes it much more "practical" to the average user who might be unwilling or uncomfortable to deal with APKs or F-Droid.

I'm not surprised the the SF Public Library is so highly-regarded but I wish we had one in my neighborhood. It is frustrating to live in a library desert. The residents of eastern SoMa need one, particularly considering the high density of inclusionary housing and the lack of free and affordable third spaces.

An example I like to use is https://www.no-log.org. They are a great activist email service that I used for many years.

It is endlessly amusing and frustrating to me how "people" (mostly billionaire speculators and their acolytes) keep talking about "building decentralized social media" when the #fediverse is already a very real and very active decentralized social media. When that happens and it is implemented easily enough for the average individual to deploy, I think social networks will actually start taking off. No more of these corporate walled gardens or highly-technical solutions that end up being marginal toys.

Finally installed #snac2 @npub1p77…0jxq! Straightforward process, no major issues. It works very well with @npub1ezg…fr29 Only issue I've had has been adding attachments. Is that supported or is there a file limit size? In any case, great job. Big fan so far.

Getting #snac running on this server has been straightforward. I spent longer hesitating on the top-level domain. Took a few minutes to get the systemd service up and running, but that was the most complicated step so far.
