a) is realy a myth. There is no such thing as a 'self-balancing grid'. When the sun isn't shining and the wind not blowing, you need fossil to fill the blanks.
b) In the Australian context the Liberals seem somewhat of an outlier in this. This has been the plan everywhere on the planet where nuclear is considered.
But even assuming the two exclude each other, the saved carbon emissions over time, say 100 years of a lifespan of a nuclear power plant, make it worth the wait.
I don't have the numbers yet for 2024, but below graph should explain the point.

"Ukraine’s national nuclear energy generating company Energoatom has said reactors at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station cannot be restarted while the facility remains under Russian control, citing serious safety violations and technical degradation.
The company said in a strongly-worded statement that any discussions about restarting the six-unit facility, which has been occupied by Russia since soon after the February 2022 invasion, would violate international nuclear and radiation safety standards.
The only legitimate operator of the station, near the frontline of fighting in southern Ukraine, is Energoatom, and only Ukrainian specialists have the necessary expertise and authority to manage the facility, the statement said.
“The fact that the largest nuclear power plant in Europe has been under illegal Russian occupation since 2022 creates unacceptable safety risks and violates international conventions on nuclear and radiation safety,” Energoatom said.
“The licence to operate the ZNPP is held by its legal operator, Energoatom, and only Ukrainian specialists have the right and competence to operate the plant.”
Energoatom said Russia’s occupation of Zaporizhzhia has significantly worsened the condition of critical safety systems. It cited a lack of proper maintenance, violation of repair schedules, lack of access to original spare parts and an inability to conduct proper inspections. It said this had led to critical degradation of the equipment and “created the prerequisites for potential emergencies”.
All six units at Zaporizhzhia are in a state of cold shutdown, defined by nuclear regulators as meaning the reactor coolant system is at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature below about 90°C following a reactor cooldown.
Cold shutdown reduces the need for cooling and lessens the risk of an accident. In a cold shutdown, the reactor is in a subcritical state, meaning no nuclear fission is taking place, and the fuel and control rods can be safely removed and replaced.
US president Donald Trump has suggested that as part of a peace deal Washington could take over the running of Zaporizhzhia.
Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has insisted that “all nuclear power plants belong to the people of Ukraine”."

"US private fusion company Commonwealth Fusion Systems has installed the disc-shaped stainless steel cryostat base, marking the start of the assembly of the SPARC tokamak. Meanwhile, Fusion for Energy has completed the manufacture of the eight torus and cryostat cryopumps for the ITER tokamak.
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is currently working to build the SPARC prototype fusion machine at its headquarters in Devens, Massachusetts. It is described as a compact, high-field, net fusion energy device that would be the size of existing mid-sized fusion devices, but with a much stronger magnetic field. The donut-shaped device will use powerful electromagnets to produce the right conditions for fusion energy, including an interior temperature surpassing 100 million degrees Celsius. It is predicted to produce 50-100 MW of fusion power, achieving fusion gain greater than 10.
To keep SPARC's superconducting magnets cold enough to perform well, CFS houses them inside a larger chamber called the cryostat, which insulates them from the outside world with a vacuum.
CFS has now installed the cryostat base which will support the 1000-tonne weight of SPARC. Measuring 24 feet (more than 7 metres) in diameter and weighing 75 tonnes, the base also absorbs some of the neutrons the fusion process creates and accommodates conduits for helium coolant, magnet power, and communication links to internal sensors.
"With the cryostat base now in place, we've begun building the heart of our fusion energy system," said Samer Hamade, Vice President of Projects at CFS. "This is a very visible example of how the CFS fusion energy project has shifted into a new phase, tokamak assembly. It's really energising to see the first part of SPARC filling what was a circular hole in the floor - a true testament to the hard work and dedication of the team."
In the coming months, CFS will install D-shaped toroidal field (TF) magnets into two orange stands, insert SPARC's vacuum vessel into the interior of those TF magnets, add the circular poloidal field (PF) magnets that loop around the structure, drop the cylindrical central solenoid (CS) magnets down the centre of the tokamak, and seal the whole assembly with the cryostat sides and top.
The company has already been working hard to install the equipment around SPARC that will make it work. That includes the systems to power and cool the tokamak's super-strong magnets, the diagnostic sensors to monitor the fusion process, and the heating system to turn SPARC's hydrogen fuel into a plasma for the fusion process.
"We completely designed the base simultaneously with all SPARC system interfaces like magnet supports, power, cryogenics, vacuum pumping, and instrumentation," said Moji Safabakhsh, a Director of Engineering at CFS. "And we received it on time after speedy fabrication. Installation of the cryostat base is a watershed moment starting the assembly process and interconnecting SPARC to the balance of the plant."
SPARC will pave the way for a first commercially viable fusion power plant called ARC, which is intended to generate about 400 MWe - enough to power large industrial sites or about 150,000 homes. ARC is expected to deliver power to the grid in the early 2030s.
In December 2024, CFS announced plans to independently finance, construct, own and operate a commercial-scale fusion power plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The company - a Massachusetts Institute of Technology spinout company - said it had reached an agreement with Dominion Energy Virginia to provide non-financial collaboration, including development and technical expertise as well as leasing rights for the proposed site at the James River Industrial Park. Dominion Energy Virginia currently owns the proposed site.
Cryopumps for ITER completed
Fusion for Energy (F4E) - the ITER Organisation's European domestic agency - announced that the eighth and final torus and cryostat cryopump for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) had completed factory acceptance tests.
The components, a key part of the reactor's fuel cycle and vacuum systems, were manufactured in collaboration with Research Instruments and Alsymex. Building on a pre-production unit, series fabrication of the components began in 2020 and peaked with the first deliveries last year.
Out of the eight cryopumps delivered by F4E, two will serve the cryostat and six will be connected to the vacuum vessel through the divertor. The cryopumps will trap gas particles using cryopanels, cooled at ultra-low temperatures of about -269°C, and later release them to re-process the unburned fuel.
In the next years, ITER Organisation will test the cryopumps under real cryogenic conditions by connecting them to the powerful cryoplant circuits.
"The cryopumps required a flawless production chain to secure the tight tolerances all through machining, welding and assembly," said Francina Canadell, Project Manager at F4E. "Thanks to a smooth coordination, we managed to meet the standards and even solve some unforeseen issues on the spot."
ITER is a major international project to build a tokamak fusion device designed to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy. The goal of ITER is to operate at 500 MW (for at least 400 seconds continuously) with 50 MW of plasma heating power input. It appears that an additional 300 MWe of electricity input may be required in operation. No electricity will be generated at ITER.
Thirty-five nations are collaborating to build ITER - the European Union is contributing almost half of the cost of its construction, while the other six members (China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the USA) are contributing equally to the rest. Construction began in 2010 and the original 2018 first plasma target date was put back to 2025 by the ITER council in 2016. However, in June last year, a revamped project plan was announced which aims for "a scientifically and technically robust initial phase of operations, including deuterium-deuterium fusion operation in 2035 followed by full magnetic energy and plasma current operation"."

honestly, I've given up on building new audiences on corporate platforms. My long game is now based on the fediverse. Things aren't quite there yet, but we're moving in the right direction. The Loops dev is considering a creator fund. Not sure how that'll work yet, but no doubt community driven and funded.

"Finnish waste management company Posiva has completed the procedure qualification test on backfill installation at the Onkalo used nuclear fuel repository. During the test, almost 12 metres of tunnel were filled with backfill clay using the backfill installation system.
At the repository, used fuel will be placed in the bedrock, at a depth of about 430 metres. The disposal system consists of a tightly sealed iron-copper canister, a bentonite buffer enclosing the canister, a tunnel backfilling material made of swellable clay, the seal structures of the tunnels and premises, and the enclosing rock.
The procedure qualification test on backfill installation was designed to demonstrate the operability of the systems and equipment in tunnel conditions at a depth of 435 metres in the bedrock. Another requirement was to achieve the specified result by deploying the operating methods and procedures that will be deployed during operation of the repository.
The minimum goal for the test, which took about three weeks, was to fill at least 10 metres of tunnel. The actual test acceptance criterion was to achieve a tunnel backfill degree of a minimum of 98%. Posiva noted that analyses that are still to be verified indicate that the achieved backfill degree exceeded this criterion.
"The large, long combination machine almost fills the entire tunnel and compacts clay with large screws while pushing it into the tunnel," said Posiva Development Manager Ari Maarni. "At the same time, it reverses slowly in order to achieve a uniform backfill degree. During the test, the transfer vehicle ran autonomously between the discharge station and the installation machine supplying more clay to the installation machine."
Maarni noted that the biggest challenges during the test were caused by the uneven floor of the tunnel. "The docking of the transfer vehicle to the installation machine was difficult in points with large surface height differences. This slowed down the work. However, as the test proceeded a lot was learned and we were able to adjust the equipment to operate faster."
The qualification test was carried out in the 50-metre-long tunnel used for the Trial Run of Final Disposal. The remaining 40 metres of the tunnel will be filled in the actual Trial Run of Underground Operation, before the tunnel is finally sealed.
The next installation procedure qualification tests will focus on testing the buffer installation system as well as the canister transfer and installation vehicle. These installation procedure qualification tests will be carried out as the last ones, and in practice parallel with each other, before the actual underground stage of the Trial Run of Final Disposal.
During the Trial Run, the operation of the complete final disposal facility is tested. Instead of actual used nuclear fuel, the trial run is conducted using non-radioactive test elements.
The Finnish government granted Posiva a construction licence for the project in November 2015 and construction work on the repository started in December 2016. Once it receives the operating licence, Posiva can start the final disposal of the used fuel generated from the operation of TVO's Olkiluoto and Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plants. The operation will last for about 100 years before the repository is closed."

Can we clean up air travel? Yes, by using manufactured fuel, taking carbon from the atmosphere. But it'll cost us a lot of energy. We better get building:
"The global airline industry expects to need 440 billion litres per year by 2050. That would require the equivalent of approximately 1200 GW of electricity, which could be provided by approximately 1200 large nuclear reactors or 4000 SMRs, assuming a 300 MW capacity for SMRs."
Why not just use renewables for this? Well, in so many words, the IAEA reports says nuclear is actually resulting in cheaper e-fuel:

The report does call for loans under the same conditions as provided for renewables to make this possible:

Toronto-headquartered Kinectrics operates two core business areas: commercial power services and nuclear medicine. Its commercial nuclear services portfolio includes support for all stages of the nuclear power plant lifecycle and other areas of the related grid ecosystem, and it is also a supplier of medical radioisotopes including lutetium-177.
BWXT President and CEO Rex Geveden described Kinectrics as a "strong and growing nuclear services company with a comprehensive portfolio of offerings to commercial nuclear players globally", with a wide base of customers, many of which are new to BWXT.
The combination of these capabilities with the offerings of BWXT's Commercial Operations segment will enable an expanded portfolio of products and services for current and new customers in the global nuclear power and radiopharmaceutical industries, BWXT said. "In the commercial nuclear power market, Kinectrics brings a broad suite of lifecycle support services that will further strengthen BWXT's position in the CANDU reactor market, while increasing its exposure to the US market and select international markets," it added.
"This acquisition expands our ability to deliver end-to-end solutions to existing and new customers more efficiently," BWXT Commercial Operations President John MacQuarrie said, adding that the investment "uniquely brings together two industry leaders with complementary expertise and service offerings in the growing commercial nuclear power and nuclear medicine markets" and will strengthen the company's ability to meet evolving customer needs. "This includes supporting utilities as they explore ways to expand nuclear power generation through life extensions and new builds, partnering with small modular reactor designers seeking comprehensive regulatory, engineering, manufacturing, and aftermarket solutions, and collaborating with healthcare partners who require reliable isotopes for under-supplied medical isotopes revolutionising oncology," he added.
Kinectrics produces ytterbium-176, a stable isotope used for the production of non-carrier-added lutetium-177 through irradiation at the Bruce nuclear power plant. Production of lutetium-177, through the Isogen joint venture partnership with Framatome, is not expected to change, Geveden told investors, the acquisition "adds a very important therapeutic isotope to our portfolio".
Developing ecosystem
Turning to small modular reactor projects, Geveden said the combination of Kinectric's offerings in project areas such as design, engineering, project integration and field testing would be complementary to BWXT's manufacturing capabilities, while Kinectric's transmission and distribution project area would be vital for "getting that power out" to customers or to direct users such as data centres. "We're trying to create an ecosystem [for small modular reactors] … as customers select partners long-term, we have the whole map figured out."
Kinectrics employs more than 1300 engineers and technical experts located across its 20 sites worldwide. The acquisition is targeted to close in the middle of this year, and will nearly double the workforce of BWXT's Commercial Operations and expand its capabilities, including lifecycle management, specialised plant services and engineering, to support the North American and international nuclear markets, the company said. Kinectrics will operate as a BWXT subsidiary, and its financial results will be reported within BWXT's Commercial Operations segment, and its current President and CEO David Harris will continue to lead the organisation, reporting to John MacQuarrie.
BWXT said the investment, which it expects to be "modestly accretive to BWXT's earnings", is "one of BWXT's strategic steps in response to current and anticipated demand for nuclear projects and services worldwide", following an announcement in 2024 of a USD60 million expansion at its facility in Cambridge, Ontario, to increase the plant's footprint by 25 percent and create more than 200 long-term jobs for skilled workers, engineers and support staff in the area.
The announcement of the Kinectrics acquisition came shortly after BWXT completed its acquisition of L3Harris' Aerojet Ordnance Tennessee, Inc. The provider of advanced speciality materials, fabrication and high-strength alloy manufacturing is also the sole provider of depleted uranium to the US government, and will operate within BWXT's government operations segment."

The joke is that people seriously think this is a model.

My advise is to have patience. I've been on Mastodon for a few years now, two years with this account, and my follow count is still a fraction of what it was on Twitter. The reason I keep active is because I see it as an investment to a social circle that'll work for decades to come, whereas I have no such hopes for Twitter/X that'll probably die within a few years.
Second, engage with others. There's no algorithm where people will be guided to you. So, you go to the people. Share your stuff but don't be too pushy about it.

Quick question: what are the forever costs of the highly toxic mining tailings that are produced for making solar panels? Or the cadmium in old PV panels that we just dump on garbage dumps and no longer think about? Just wondering.
Let's stop with the double standard. Nuclear waste is extremely well taken care off. Should the other energy sources be taken to that standard, they would go bankrupt instantly.

"Concrete is dirt cheap, as it is essentially dirt mixed with tiny amounts of a certain glue. You won't get much cheaper.
If you want to replace it with equal amounts of a very difficult to use at this scale and highly complex (in comparison) product, you will end up with far higher material costs and higher process costs.
For large structures, concrete is very close to the optimal costs.
Cheap polymers cost about two orders of magnitude more than concrete. For nuclear concrete, it's still a bit more than an order of magnitude difference."
That's interesting. I was under the assumption polymers would indeed be cheaper.

honestly this argument is a copout and an incorrect representation of ‘growth’. The Western economies have actually been ‘growing’ mostly abstractly: think financial derivatives, etc. In real economic terms it has been deindustrialising for decades now. Real, tangible, economic growth has mostly been occurring in places like China and India. Africa is going to be a huge growth area (again, in real tangible terms like steel, concrete, fertilizer use, etc) for the rest of this century.
Put like this, demands like ‘degrowth’ become absurd at best, and neocolonialism at worst. Who are we to say Africa has to remain dirt poor just because we in the West already used ip all the ‘carbon credit’ for the planet?
No, the point has always been how to ‘decouple’ economic (real) growth from impacts on the environment. How do we develop humanity sustainably? This starts with an abundance of energy, but also developing technologies to be sustainable in other areas, like agriculture which is currently using half the planet, for a large part to produce meat.
Degrowth has never been an answer to this. Just a distraction.

I had a late night thought: why do we build the domes of PWR plants with concrete actually? Hear me out:
The function of a dome, or containment, is to play a critical role in the most severe nuclear reactor accidents, it is only designed to contain or condense steam in the short term.
Polymers can do that, no sweat.
So, why don’t we build plastic domes?
There’s a concern on radiation containment, and I get that, concrete is great for blocking radiation. So, outside the dome we build one or two layers of cheap concrete ‘lego’ blocks (see picture below). Cheap and super fast to construct. Think days instead of months.
Can people in the know chime in on this? Given that 60% of a PWR plant is nuclear grade concrete, this could actually bring construction costs down considerably, while having no effect on safety.
And before people read stuff I didn’t say: I’m not saying we replace all the concrete with polymers. A core catcher for example would probably need to be made from concrete still. But a dome?

Also, where is Eugen in the media? Bluesky boasts 1 million sign ups in the last three days. Where is Mastodon in the headlines? Surely *now* is the time to introduce people to this network? After all, *now* is the time tens of millions of people are looking for a new home.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: establishing a network effect (that is, people being on a platform that you want to follow) is the single most determinant for people bothering to join a social media network and staying there. Moments like these come by rarely and should be snatched up as if they were candy.

🇬🇧 Britain increases funding for new nuclear reactor at Sizewell C, a plan to power 6 million homes with 24/7 clean energy. The total has been raised to 5.5 billion pounds for the project.
These units get built for 80 years service or more. Together with Hinkley Point C and Sizewell B (a single unit PWR which has been delivering since 1996) the total would be around 60 TWh annually, or around 17% of the UK electricity consumption.
The UK has several legacy nuclear sites, which could be repurposed for these new safe units. I hope the new Labour government goes ahead and pushes forward.

As we seem yet another one of these nuclear container ship articles come by, I keep missing something that has been raised in my comments again and again: what about piracy?
For my two cents: I don't think piracy is going to be a huge issue. We're talking about industrial scale equipment here, not something you could likely steal, unless you take the whole ship with you.
And say you do, then what? I have a humble guess that there aren't many nuclear engineers among Somali pirates, that know what they're doing when it comes to this stuff. So, what could they realistically do with it? Even the scenario of a 'dirty bomb' is far fetched: the physics just don't really work out for this material that has low enrichment.
So, let's move on with this and decarbonise the world's container shipping fleet already.

Regarding mining, I'll share below chart. As you can clearly see, the amount of resources needed is, by far, smallest for nuclear. But I agree mining in general needs to be improved. Abysmal working conditions and imperialist exploitative relations need to be attacked. This goes for all mining though.
As for land use, you're incorrect regarding solar. I've included a second chart, this time from Our World in Data, for your convenience.
I'm not sure how nuclear power inherently perpetuates private property and imperialism? I already explained that renewables have similar (but bigger in scale, as more resources are needed) problems in third world countries. For example the child miners in Congo mining cobalt. Furthermore, I would argue that a decentralised grid powered by solar and wind would actually create a petty bourgeois proprietor system of electricity. This is indeed a political problem.
As for bombs: civilian nuclear reactors aren't the best way to make bombs (it is at best a theoretical possibility). Therefore, this is hardly an argument against civilian nuclear energy.

The Westinghouse eVinci engineering teams crafted a full-diameter mechanical cross-section of the eVinci core, which comes in at an impressive 14,500 kg! Measuring more than 3 meters in diameter, the structure was assembled vertically before it was tilted into a horizontal position. It's the same process that'll be used at full-scale manufacturing.
Using identical materials as those used in the eVinci microreactor, this test sets the stage to commence work on the eVinci test reactor.

There's an important difference between hazard and risk. Nuclear waste is hazardous, but because we know that, we can deal with it appropriately and thereby lower the risk.
There's a parallel to be made with flying: hazardous, but safe. Because we know how to make safe planes.
High level waste will be hazardous for around 300 years, as the fission products decay away. Can we store something safely for that time? I think we can. Therefore it isn't a problem.
