Conversely, I'd say it is a bug with the system/computing environment that there is no way to safely run arbitrary commands (a fully isolated temporary environment) without causing problems for the user.
QubesOS is about as close as "mainstream" OSes get to doing so and it's still a fair ways off (inducing resource starvation/DoS is entirely possible without any permissions, there aren't sufficiently granular resource limitation toggles to prevent it).

That (no ABI) requires a hosted language-based system in order to have adequate structured messaging capacity.
It also requires the language to have a fairly rich type-system, otherwise that will be a wasted effort and guest languages will yet again have to formulate supplementary interchange formats will all sorts of unwanted slowdowns as a result.
That being said, source availability is irrelevant to a program's nature as proprietary malware. Source-available proprietary malware is readily available.

Used enterprise stuff isn't particularly dodgy and is affordable-enough one can go for triple/quadruple redundancy reasonably (for less than the price of a single new drive of similar quality). They can be tested for mostly proper function too.
For SSDs one is plain out of luck there, testing isn't an option. Either they're spec'd for high intensity & high resilience and that hasn't been used-up yet, or they're not and there's no telling when they'll fail in some dumb way (whether new or used). The majority of them don't properly implement powerloss protection either, including the ones that claim to do so, and have the risk of corrupting even data at rest on powerloss. Which means that /regardless/ of how new a given SSD is, high redundancy is non-optional. (In theory there are commands to flush the hardware cache or disable it, but the drive can just lie about obeying it.)

A collaborating group pooling resources can attain more than a single person with hypothetically optimal performance, even if not a single member of the collaboration is even close to optimal performance.
There's a point of diminishing returns on collaboration/coordination but through various means that can be pushed pretty far back.

Sure is a shame those languages were badly designed (this was a consideration for Common Lisp's design). But also, precaching on installation could be an option.
Then recompilation/recaching of modules or individual source files could happen only when changes occur.

That's a feature.
They would require emulation or running in "unsafe, taking my life into my own hands regardles of consequences" mode.

Common Lisp could run without being compiled in many implementations and Smalltalk/Self pioneered much of JIT. These are techniques that could be reused.

For several of the languages earlier derided, they could use dynamic checks for the properties they expect until background compilation/caching is completed. Or a weaker checks with safe crashing/exception/whatever on illegal behavior.

There is an assumption that the expander is properly grounded through the PCIe slot & isolates its data & on-card power and that the PSU of the drive (SAS target) host is working properly (its safety features do list a number of things related to this).
I would indeed much prefer if the SAS interconnect between the two machines was fiber but alas, that is more expensive.

I haven't really had any issues with my own setup.
I handled power draw by simply having sufficiently-spec'd equipment (yes that was an additional expense, but I was already going for it anyway because I don't trust cheap power equipment that lists no safety features whatsoever).

That's true but much fewer torrent clients are webtorrent compatible (libtorrent does support it) and hosting only the torrents is still lighter than hosting the stack for a full peertube installation.
(I still think peertube should support conventional torrent protocol + webseeds too. I'm seeing conflicting information on whether it already does.)
As for storage, even if one isn't quite reasonable, building a storage array with used enterprise drives & best practices for scrubbing can get one pretty far on a lower budget.
The backup story gets bleak though. Either another array needed or tape, but the drives for tape are very expensive when in a good/functional state. With popular/highly-seeded video the importance of the resilience of one's backups is reduced, but one can't necessarily rely on that.

Summers get disgustingly hot & humid enough here that even with windows open it's asking for heatstroke or puking sooner than later (when the wind feels like it's just making one /hotter/ instead...).
They used not to get /quite/ as bad (a few miserable weeks were still common, but it wasn't a constant thing) but a mix of climate change & fucking up the environment by paving over more & cutting down trees has made things significantly worse.

Reminds me vaguely of org-roam (which I do use).
That's more... knowledge work/notes/storybuilding than stuff like finding all music & images I've decided are associated with Blame! (Is this a tag? a collection object? both? In any case, no current system supports this out of the box), queuing some of it and re-reading one's favorite parts of the manga. Maybe annotating bits of songs with comments and references to particular pages that seem to fit well together.

Yeah, Pharo & its "Glamorous Toolkit" certainly could be used to implement what I'm talking about/envisioning, though I don't know that to have been done already.
The object database part is not something they have as far as I know and considering just how much data I have, it just isn't optional (my music collection alone wouldn't fit in any amount of memory I can reasonably buy).

I recall that vaguely (I'm rewatching some of the videos), I hadn't thought about it in a while.
I think that might be a fair bit too out of the computer for me (among other concerns/constraints) but then, they do highlight the communal computer target use-case so that's to be expected.
The midi-sequencing bit with paper is pretty neat and it would definitely be fun to make some poor hacker's take on modular synths with that. Some blu-tack, paper and some time using markers sure would be a lot cheaper & more readily available.
The implied structure of the underlying computing system is also quite intriguing.
The nearly-free integration of analog computing is also very neat.

I feel this is probably a hopeless query, but does anyone know of some sort of shell, GUI-based or whatever, that has something like a built-in object database, various possible interactions based on those object types (or messages they answer to, works too) and where one can run arbitrary queries & expressions for finding those objects (as well as drilling down graphically)?
I'm currently annoyed with the hierarchical filesystem structure for my data and the haphazard tools I've made to vaguely approach some of that with Emacs & SQL(ite) just feel like a pale shadow of what it could be (plus the rigid table-typing of SQL doesn't allow for a first-class implementation of the dynamism I want).

It's a dynamic storage medium that requires periodic checking and integrity verification & repair (and redundancy to handle drives failing).
Why is this supposed to be a surprise to anyone?
It's like they did no due diligence whatsoever before picking that.
As for tape, it *also* requires periodic maintenance because it *also* degrades even in ideal conditions.
Essentially, what Iron Mountain is doing is admitting to gross negligence (they should never have *accepted* bare drives to be left inert for years).
Millenium Disc was largely vaporware so as far as I'm aware, we do not have any centuries-long archiving other than punched cards (in particular ones not made of paper but something more hardy).

There isn't really any point to that.
You *can* use merkel trees appendable only by that one user (key ownership as write capability verified by signature) if you want to be sure no messages are missing, I suppose. But tamper-resistance is as simple as cryptographic signatures & a key-addressing scheme.
Allowance for eventual upgrade of the encryption and key-type replacement would need to be considered.

I wonder if that's Ruby screwing up laziness at a semantic level or if it's again implementation. Haskell doesn't screw it up nearly as bad, from what I've seen. (Though there are definitely cases where it's users do use & recommend eager evaluation.)
