It's a dynamic storage medium that requires periodic checking and integrity verification & repair (and redundancy to handle drives failing).
Why is this supposed to be a surprise to anyone?
It's like they did no due diligence whatsoever before picking that.
As for tape, it *also* requires periodic maintenance because it *also* degrades even in ideal conditions.
Essentially, what Iron Mountain is doing is admitting to gross negligence (they should never have *accepted* bare drives to be left inert for years).
Millenium Disc was largely vaporware so as far as I'm aware, we do not have any centuries-long archiving other than punched cards (in particular ones not made of paper but something more hardy).
