Mostly because it got overhyped and overused to the point of becoming mundane.
I'm not sure if that happened /before/ or after "sufficiently close" synthetic variants became a thing.
The synthetic vanilla is a *lot* cheaper and easier to make.
(Vanilla can be greenhouse grown, so the post isn't accurate either.)
