Story time:
6 years ago my mother in law was left penniless in a surprise divorce at age 67.
My father in law (piece of shit) had left her with nothing and planned to dump her on social security.
She was working as a pre school teacher making $14 an hour.
We had to move fast.
Father in law literally shotgun divorced her.
Showed up at the doorstep with a notary and manipulated an emotionally fragile woman into a binding legal agreement.
I was pissed.
I showed up a few hours later with a series of financial plans.
And with tears still streaming down her face in the kitchen of her tiny apartment, she picked one.
I gave her 3 options.
1. Aggressive
2. Extremely aggressive
3. Dave Ramsey rice and beans
She chose number 3.
Over the next 4 years she rode her bike to work everyday. Watered down her lemonade. Spent nothing on herself. Walked dogs for extra income. Took weekend shifts at the preschool. Showed up early. Stayed late and against all odds was able to save 12k a year on a salary of only 27k.
I set up a couple retirement accounts for her and whenever she would scratch $1,000 together she would give it to me and I would smash buy GBTC or MSTR.
My mother in law has never invested a day in her life and I didn’t want the news or some boomer friend to freak her out, so my wife and I just tell her she’s invested in “the market” 😂
When Bitcoin (the market) is doing good, we tell her and when it’s not we just… don’t tell her lol
So she’s effectively shielded from the emotional volatility of hodling. Which makes her a very good hodler.
Fast forward to today.
I helped her retire from the preschool. She is now living with us and helping look after her grandchildren.
She went from being near suicidal. My wife and I were legitimately concerned about her mental health. To a happy healthy and vibrant grandmother.
And as of yesterday she crossed 500k in retirement accounts.
I expect she’ll be a millionaire soon.
She can now comfortably retire with dignity.
This is not something that would have been possible without Bitcoin.
As cool as it is to see people like @saylor make billions of dollars these are the stories I live for.
The average person fixing their life with bitcoin.
It’s so fucking beautiful man.

My own advice would be to think of your plan A as also a plan B. Life is long, lots of things are going to happen. You may change direction often. You are more free to make the most of that opportunity, if your skills & responsibilities provide for flexibility.

Not you have it backwards. I didn’t have much outgoing liquidity. My partner had the outgoing, so if the channel closed, the sats on his/her side would have gone back onchain. Then they’d be down liquidity on their node and need to find another partner to open with as well as would incur additional fees.
It would appear that they seized an opportunity when a route passed from their side (send side) to my side (routing through me) that pushed liquidity off their side of the channel (to my side) and then closed the channel.
When the channel closes, it sends whatever outgoing liquidity I had in the channel back onchain. Therefore it costs me sats when the channel closes which can’t be avoided, but it also costs me to open a new channel.
In the end, it’s not that big of a deal. But the right thing to do would have been to close the channel when all the outgoing was on their side if they were unhappy with the channel. They made the decision, they should have incurred the hit. Now my node is out of balance and I’ll be looking for a replacement channel. As well as I have to wait on the funds to settle back onchain.

Every time I use the lightning network to make a payment, it seems to work flawlessly. As soon as I try to do a "circular rebalance" on my lightning node, it's a crap shoot with a 80% failure rate.
I'm guessing it mainly has to do with the size of the rebalance, but I'm never moving more than 1/2 the channel. Most of my channels are a couple million sats, but I can't believe 500K or 750K or 1500K sats would be nearly impossible to route through 3 or 4 hops...
Anyone else have similar issue?

Okay. Ich bin mittlerweile kein Demokrat mehr und Rechts (wenn sichere Grenzen, Freiheit und gutes Geld rechts sind) - geschenkt!
Dennoch bin ich der Meinung, dass der Umgang der Altparteien und Medien mit der AfD (welche ich nicht wähle) hochgradig undemokratisch ist.
Dass rechte Kreise nun in Thüringen eine Bürgerwehr bilden wollen, sollte doch aber jeden der nur Rechts ist und die AfD wählt, aufhorchen lassen.
Genauso wie die extreme Linke durch eine linke Ideologie in der Regierung gestärkt wird und davon profitiert (Linksextremismus wird oft als Tatbestand ignoriert etc) genauso wird die extreme Rechte durch eine Rechte Ideologie in der Regierung bestätigt. Was denkt ihr wie es dann weitergeht? Eine Bürgerwehr wird ganz schnell zu dem was die anderen Parteien der AfD vorwerfen: Züge annehmen, die der Nazizeit ähneln.
Ich verurteile niemanden der die AfD wählt. Ganz im Gegenteil: Mein Arbeitskollege wählt die AfD und wir sind uns in vielen Punkten einig. Nur nicht bei dem Kreis auf dem Wahlschein.
Trotzdem bin ich der Meinung, dass solange keine Rechtsextremen Postionen im Wahlprogramm der AfD vorkommen, diese nicht unterdrückt werden oder verboten werden darf.
Disclaimer: Ich habe die AfD fast seit der Gründung beobachtet, da ich 2014 politisch Aktiv werden wollte. Ich habe jedoch schnell festgestellt, dass viele Mitglieder rechtsaußen stehen, deswegen ist die Partei für mich nicht wählbar, wenn gleich ich dem Wahlprogramm zustimme. Zumindest was die Sicherung der Grenzen und den Umgang mit Illegalen Asylanten angeht.
Aber spätestens seit die Petry weg ist, ist die gemäßigte Rechte in der AfD nur Schminke. Und das keine rechtsextremen Positionen im Wahlprogramm stehen, beudeted, dass sie genau wissen, dass dies deren definitives Ende wäre. Rechtsextreme sind Rechtsextrem und oft doof. Aber eben nicht so dumm ihre Positionen ins Wahlprogramm zu schreiben.
