I see that Chatham House has a “follow us on social” list on its website. X is of course prominently listed (no Mastodon). I click on the X link and they have 299k followers there. I click the writer’s handle and he is also still active on X. He had a Bluesy a/c, but hasn’t posted in 8 months.

Makes me smile warmly when I come across a new web dev expert, perhaps via a link from someone, and it goes to their Twitter/X page, but then I see they've stopped posting on X and are pointing to their Mastodon page. So I follow them on Mastodon, also knowing X doesn't get to access that person's thoughts anymore. That reminds me, webrings were awesome in Web 1.0. They were pure serendipity, but it was also very topic-centric. E.g. I’m a big Bowie fan and there were some amazing Bowie fan sites in the 90s, and webrings that pointed to many of them. I think fediverse tech can reestablish that kind of magic, where the user is still in control (not algorithms), but there are awesome indie sites being shared.

I just checked Theads and the first 20 posts in my default feed (which is black box algorithm generated) were from users I don’t follow or even know. Where Web 2.0 went wrong was when algorithms started deciding what I should read. The early blogosphere had it right: your feed (in an RSS reader at that point) was who you’d chosen to follow, and then you had people/strangers who left comments or trackbacks on your blog, and if you found what they said compelling you’d add them too. #HumanFirst

It is diabolical, especially since it’s common for sites to make “Accept All” the default and you have to do 1-2 more actions to reject stuff. So the dark patterns deployed actually make the Euro stance on privacy a UX horror show. Surely the user should be able to set their default preferences at the browser level?! Checking out Writebook, the new web-based books software from 37signals. Was initially called Workbook. Looks interesting, it's basically a Rails app you install on your server -- maybe a static site generator would be more appropriate? Also, no export to Kindle, ePUB or pdf -- which might be the reason I don't end up using it, tbh. I like the idea of web-based books, but I think book readers need an option to read in a Kindle device (or whatever ebook reader they use). https://once.com/writebook

Seems like it isn't just the big tech cos concerned about increased government meddling in tech matters. Looks like UK folks can now federate from Threads. I will have a play, but I will be keeping Mastodon as my main social account. In fact, I hope to federate *from* Mastodon to Threads, eventually.
"Today, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads is expanding their beta for sharing to the fediverse. People who are 18+ and using Threads with a public account can turn on sharing to the fediverse. Interesting new book on culture; the premise is that the term “creative industries” born in the 90s has taken culture too far into economics. The author argues that “culture is at the heart of what it means to be human.” Hear hear! The attached bit especially stood out in my reading today, in reference to the current AI era.
