Accidentally ended up with lots of oat milk that's about to go off. We've got rice pudding in the slow cooker, plans for soda bread and scones, and we had custard for breakfast.

Can anyone recommend any good #CitizenScience #nature surveys happening in June in the UK?

My diagnosis is #LongCovid, but like many, #MECFS also fits my symptoms.
People only see me on good days. I don't seem disabled.
Yesterday, I helped at a fête. I sat at a table, smiled at people, and helped them do craft.
Today, I slept OK, but I'm so tired I could cry. My head feels awful. My legs ache. I haven't washed. I'm not dressed. I can't get food. Writing this is so much effort it hurts. But I've had far worse days.

Today I get to vote for a Police and Crime Commissioner.
I still don't get why the job exists, even less why it's appointed by public ballot.
My three candidates are:
- tough on crime!
- tough on crime!
- tough on crime (but maybe remember we should work *with* the community?)
Not much choice. Not much point. And I have to find ID to be allowed.
But I will turn up and mark my paper. Possibly by writing "fuck the police" across it.

The rumour is that they've already been moved to somewhere easier to round them up. Nobody knows for certain, though.

Someone may be well enough to work 7.5hrs at a moderately stressful job with a 30min commute, 5 days a week, knowing they have job security and progression options. But that same person may not be able to manage 9hrs at a high-stress job with 1hr commute, plus "catching up" at weekends, knowing that they could be made redundant tomorrow.
These describe Dad's job 40 years ago that he was good at, and a similar one now that would very likely burn him out.

They're a pie shop. They sell pies. They don't get pretentious about corporate values, they just get on with the business of baking and selling pies. They move with the market, but they don't try to reinvent themselves. In a world of image and buzz and spin, I really like the down-to-earth honesty of it.

@npub1g0t…tvm4 this has been a source of friction in our family for a while. Dad took a job in his early 20s and stayed there, with multiple promotions, until he retired. He can't get his head around the fact that jobs just don't work that way any more.

My last job was permanent. It would have been categorised secure. I was made redundant after three years.
My current job is fixed term, extended if funding can be found. It would be categorised insecure. I've been in it three years so far and have a contract until the end of 2024.
My "insecure" job has already lasted longer than my "secure" job did.

I was happily minding my own business, watching for my exit. Suddenly, a blur of grey dive bombed the wing mirror a foot from my hand, bounced across the windscreen, and disappeared towards the hard shoulder.
How I got safely to my destination I do not know. When I did, there were still feathers on my car.

At hospital for a #LongCovid appointment, we made use of the drop-off/pick-up point.
It's a one-way loop, so vehicles can come in, pause at the side, and move off again. It works pretty well and keeps flowing. It's right outside the main door, perfect for dropping off low mobility folk near where they need to be. It's got shelters outside to keep people dry as they wait for pick-up. There are plentiful benches, and a smoking shelter.
But there's one very annoying flaw.

@npub1g0t…tvm4 I have often wondered just how much positive and useful work our armed forces could do if they stopped doing the killing stuff.
Whenever they're brought in to deal with major emergencies (foot&mouth, flood response, etc) they're fantastic.
Set them to creating temp schools while the RAAC is sorted, have them drop polling stations in hard to reach areas, get them supporting major infrastructure work like bridge building.
It would probably be far cheaper, too.

@npub1g0t…tvm4 oh what a surprise. My council is a little spot of dark orange surrounded by off-white. I'm sure it's not at all related to being a traditionally Labour, working class, industrial area. I'm also sure the council equivalent of the poverty trap* isn't at all relevant.
On paper, we've had huge red wall gov investment. All capital, like the fancy new museum wing, but no staff to run it.
*low value homes -> low council tax income -> low investment and services -> low value homes

I now have an official, NHS-issue walking stick. Alongside it, I have been granted a neon sign that says "This person is incompetent."
I honestly don't mind answering questions and describing (most of) my symptoms. I believe it's important that people know what #LongCovid can do.
But if I politely refuse an offer of help, please don't repeat it. I know what I can manage better than you do, and if it looks awkward, I need to practice.

I've been composting by trial and error for the last few years. Balancing browns and greens is something that I've definitely found helpful, both for making better compost and for recycling cardboard that isn't as clean as the bin collection demands.
It's good to learn new terms for it 😀

Social mobility, self-sufficiency, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and all the rest of it sell the idea that your starting point doesn't matter, and it's all about hard work. If you just work at it, you can achieve anything. Statistics proving that isn't true would undermine the lie that Tory voters vote for.

I do, by chance, have good contact with some of the councillors and various 3rd sector folks. I'll have to chat to them about ideas, see if we can build on some of the excellent arts work that's already happening.

The difficulty is that we now don't have access to the EU. The now-Labour council seem to be making positive noises, so we'll see what they come up with.
I honestly can't imagine Gullis keeping his seat. There is a *lot* of bad feeling towards him locally, not least because he keeps getting in the news for saying awful things. But it's not yet clear who will replace him.

There was some kind of offer on, and First was cheaper than standard. It also included lunch, wiping that expense off the claim altogether and saving more money. But the Powers That Be noticed that we plebs were having a nice time and banned it, immediately doubling our expense claims.
They also banned overnights, saving £50 on hotels and costing £100+ more on peak time trains.

- Much of our housing stock has nowhere to fit a charger.
- Our infrastructure may not cope with that much extra draw.
- It's still traffic, with all the delays, jams, and parking issues traffic has.
We already have all the technology necessary for massively reducing car use (WFH, local access, public transport, etc). We just need to use it.

@npub1hpc…hjn3 it strikes me that it shouldn't be too difficult to build a basic reinstate function to rectify that kind of error. On blocking a server, take a snapshot of all accounts followed. On unblocking the server, offer to reinstate the follows.
On the whole, it's maturity of tools like that that Mastodon is missing. It just needs to be that little bit more slick and rich for the mass audience.

@npub1hpc…hjn3 journalists are likely to say they're just reporting the board's view, not making their own judgement. They're avoiding libel claims. It's the same when they use "scare quotes". But they seem happy enough to print lies when it suits them. It's all weasel words.
I'd love for journalists to just come out and use the words racist and sexist, wait for the libel claim, and prove themselves right in court.

Arguably not enough of the outcry has been aimed at the airlines and hotels, but it has existed.

@npub1g0t…tvm4 will that access to cash be via pay-to-use cash machines so people in more deprived areas have to pay £1.50 to withdraw £20 of their own money? It was a cause for significant celebration when a free machine appeared in my little area-of-multiple-deprivation town.
I also suspect that rich folk have zero idea how useless something 3 miles away is when it costs too much to get there.

It would also be interesting to cross-reference socio-economic background and how health inequality in childhood affects eventual adult height.

Absolutely.
I've reduced my own carbon footprint to around 3 - 4T CO2e and I'm always interested in ways to reduce it more. But realistically, it's tinkering at the edges now, and I refuse to lose sleep over the fact that the reduced price sandwich I had for lunch had chicken in.
I'm not a lie-in-front-of-bulldozers sort of person. But I can and do chat to people, give talks, visit schools, etc to share my knowledge in the hope that some of them start lying in front of bulldozers!

I see a *lot* of wasted effort inventing, recording and analysing KPIs without understanding that they only measure the very narrow thing they measure. When it's "saleable quality plates", that's OK. When it's even a tiny bit more complex, it fails.
Upper management are obsessed with KPIs because it's all they have. Lower managers don't have the skills or power to push back. Workers work to the KPI only, to the detriment of all else.

My top tip for surviving the cost of greed crisis is to buy a house 20+ years ago. It's the only reason we're not drowning. The mortgage is going up, but starting from very small makes it still manageable.
