Social mobility, self-sufficiency, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and all the rest of it sell the idea that your starting point doesn't matter, and it's all about hard work. If you just work at it, you can achieve anything. Statistics proving that isn't true would undermine the lie that Tory voters vote for.
