Our grass is ridiculously tall. Almost to the knees in places. And it rained yet again last night so now it's too wet to cut without constant clogging and mud. Again.
We avoided cutting it during the week because it was 85-90F the whole time and now it's too wet and STILL too hot. And there's more rain forecasted pretty much every other day for the next week so it's never going to have a chance to dry out.
I wonder how tall it can get...

Getting to where I might want to spend time fighting UITableView instead of fighting SwiftUI's List.
The last time I tried to replace a List with a tableview, though, I had problems with safe area stuff - I want my UITableView to extend behind SwiftUI's nav bars and toolbars on the bottom and interact correctly with them when it scrolls.
Anyone have a UIViewControllerRepresentable (or I guess UIViewRepresentable) wrapping a UITableView that does the right thing with that stuff?

A day or two ago I was seeing a lot of mainstream news articles about the geomagnetic storm trying to drum up fear about how all our technology was going to collapse and cell phones would stop working and maybe there'd be blackouts and all sorts of other disasters. Of course the place was forcing everyone to use this - the regular counter where a human would normally work was closed. Everyone had to use the machine. I only bought 4 water bottles but I put them all on the pad in a cluster and it failed to identify anything. Lady reaches from behind the counter and moves them into a straight line, "ya gotta spread them out hun." Like I'm supposed to just know this.

I don't really understand how this TikTok ban thing is supposed to work. So some new company splits off, maybe, and it's based in America.. except, presumably, it still has to communicate with the backend servers which are.. what... all controlled by the China parent company? Are these two companies supposed to just magically share the video data between them? Do they fork the *entire* thing.. client code and backend servers? Now people outside the US have to pick from two different TikTok apps?

@npub1p9k…865w my (possibly wrong) guess is that because the number changes it potentially changes the width of the Text that's displaying that number. Unfortunately that number is inside of an HStack, so if the width of the contained Text change it needs to change the width of the whole HStack now. At that point it has to ask the Menu how wide it'd like to be given this new situation and it has to redo the Menu's contents to figure that out.

Sure we have super cool languages with amazing static analysis and stuff now - and don't get me wrong, I like that stuff (mostly) - but it all sucks to *use*.

I got about 80% of my driveway done on my first charge. Going to head back out now that the batteries have been charging for about an hour. Hopefully I can finish the rest of the job and then stay inside and out of the wind for the rest of the day. (Current "feels like" is -10F / -23.3C.)
I don't know what the official snowfall total was for my area (various websites are disagreeing), but my unofficial calculations suggest it was a lot.

Just showed the kids Windows 95 running in a browser (🤯) and the thing they were amazed about is how clean it was. No toolbars everywhere, no junk in the task bar, nothing that looked like ads, etc. It's sad how things have evolved.

Took the Steam Deck to mom’s and having wifi problems. It refused to join insisting the password was wrong. I changed a bunch of router settings and turned off the one that unifies the 2.4/5ghz networks. Found that the Steam Deck will join the 2.4ghz network but not the 5ghz one. (It sees it just fine.) Other devices can join the 5ghz one. I’ve had to reboot Steam Deck a bunch of times too since it seems to get confused and stops seeing any networks. This seems quite buggy. Works fine at home.

It's weirdly difficult to allow my iPhone to play Christmas music through its speaker for the people in the room while I use my AirPods to listen to something else on my computer. The audio keeps trying to steal from one device or the other.

The first five or six seasons of SG-1 did a terrific job of allowing the heroes to be heroes without feeling like they did it alone. It almost always felt like a team effort. As time went on it started to drift toward the lone hero trope where saving the day comes down to one person over and over but at least the person sometimes varied. Atlantis started there but got more extreme as it went on. Essentially everything is solved by Rodney by the end of the show. Might as well be Stargate: McKay.

Of course the real trick is how to determine what a "good" reply even is. That's probably not an easy problem. I know there's such things as sentiment analysis, but I'm not sure how that all works or if that'd even be enough.

It'd be potentially neat if Mastodon had a "reply quality" slider on the mentions page for folks that want it.
Imagine going to the page with all your recent replies, and then dragging a slider to a level where you see the ones you're okay with but most of the annoying ones have disappeared.
Default would be off and max might hide *all* replies except from mutuals or something? You'd still receive replies, technically, you just wouldn't get notifications or see them without digging in the UI.

Two different out-of-the-blue business(?) offers today:
One on YouTube is suggesting that I partner with them to make custom PCBs (I'm not sure what about my recent electronics videos suggests I'm remotely ready for something like that), and the other was via a DM on Mastodon (from a brand new account that didn't even follow me) asking to buy a domain name I've owned (and still use) for 20+ years.
Black Friday is off to a weird start.

Maybe that's okay, but I worry that it might not be very interesting in the long run? The especially tricky part is that it's natural to want to turn them into something more like a tutorial, but I don't know what I'm doing and don't really want anyone to mistake me for an authority. 😛 (Plus I don't know if I can keep it up!)

Checked YouTube dashboard and there was a sudden spike of video views a few hours ago - my last vid has over 400 views now! I'm guessing "the algorithm" did... something? Whatever it was, the views are no longer spiking, though, so I guess it's over. I did discover that apparently only 48% of viewers made it past 30 seconds, though. Maybe I need to shout more?

Probably over a decade ago I set a user defaults override I had come across that disables the mac's desktop entirely. (I have no icons on my desktop - it is only the wallpaper.) I don't know if this a public/official setting or not, but that override has persisted all this time across many major OS upgrades. I often forget that this isn't the normal macOS experience.

It's been close to a week with my progressive lenses. I've mostly adapted to knowing where to look for stuff but my eye strain is something else. By early afternoon my eyes are just exhausted. I'm not sure if this is going to get better or not or how long to wait and see. I'm hesitant to call the optometrist too soon because I have a feeling they'll blow me off if it hasn't been "long enough."

I'm not so happy with Discovery, though. There were a few arcs I enjoyed and I really liked Saru's character. Obviously Discovery gets a lot of credit for launching this version of Pike and Strange New Worlds, but the overall show is just... I dunno... a mess, IMO. Perhaps it needed to exist to get us where we are now, though. Maybe not in terms of story, but like, production, etc.

Just watched the Ted Lasso darts scene for the first time in a couple years and it's still one of the best scenes in a TV show of all time, IMO. We recently started Artemis Fowl for story time with the kids and they're enjoying it a lot, but I noticed something funny about how the book is written that was also true of The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series.
I just looked them up, and both date from the early 2000s - so the same era.
For both of these, the authors had a weird obsession with late 90s/early-00s tech. They don't use "a computer", they use a Macintosh specifically, for example. The tech stuff is over-specified.

Do people actually watch live streams or recordings of previous live streams of people coding? And if so, what makes it interesting to you?
I've sometimes thought about trying it, but I have a hard time imagining anyone would watch. Plus, talking and coding just don't usually mix well for me - they use the same parts of my brain, I guess. So like, I'll mumble and talk to myself sometimes... but if I have to switch mental gears and talk to another person it tends to cause mental state collapse.

@npub12ze…hunm I'm being told screen readers almost all seem to read "underscore" when reading snake_case, unfortunately. I'm not sure what that would mean when interacting with source code, but for things like hashtags I guess camelCase or PascalCase would be better in general given the way they currently work.

The main reason I think I've come to prefer snake_case is that it doesn't give extra weight to secondary words in a name.
For example: darkOliveGreen vs. dark_olive_green
The camelCase one seems to give extra attention to the "OliveGreen" part just because of how the words get capitalized and that bugs me. 😛
It works well in cases like:
darkBlue, lightBlue, etc.. because the prefix all seems to modify Blue.
But use them next to normal blue:
darkBlue
lightBlue
blue
Argh - blue is so sad!
