Has anyone built the #indieweb version of Meetup? (Opt in to groups that then plan localized events - perhaps inclusive of online ones?) it’s tricky as it takes some good practices to avoid spam, scams and other bad behavior and actors. But reoccurring (as well as one off but low barriers to entry to holding) events is really good for community building (regardless of the topics)

So while I’m usually loath to give Facebook / Meta credit I have to note something I saw today (on Wil Wheaton’s FB pages) - they now have an option to limit comments to actual friends of the poster OR accounts that have followed the poster for at least 24hrs. While imperfect this is a solid option to minimize “drive by” comments/bots swarming a given post.
Imperfect to be sure but notable as an improvement and a solid step in still allowing comments from “followers” but reducing trolling

one of the (many) annoying things FB is doing recently is pushing a metric ton of sponsored/suggested posts into my main feed. Including repeating ones I have hidden and showing me a dozen or so sponsored posts in a row all insanely badly targeted (I'm not a sports fan and if I was one I live in San Jose CA - so am very unlikely to be interested in a Texas professional basketball team). But FB also insists on showing me totally random ads with autoplaying videos (muted so no clue what about)

not random thought - the massive major obvious AI fails make for easy clickbait stories - but I suspect the even more common yet much harder to write about category of AI errors aren't where it makes massive or even silly mistakes but where it makes more subtle mistakes of omission or where it suggests something that's almost right but misses key steps or details - showing an answer that for example was true years ago but isn't fully accurate now

visiting Seattle next week for my son's spring break, we'll be staying downtown, not going to have a car (but the whole family loves walking/taking trains places), we might do a boat tour one day, will definitely take the monorail (yes know it barely goes anywhere), probably the requisite Space Needle, and Pacific Science Center (has a reciprocal arrangement with our local Tech Interactive) what other kid friendly things should we do? Got sucked into the great discussions at #FediForum and didn’t live post as much as I had planned. Another fantastic event. (Specifically for two things but there may be ways to use it for them if I get creative. 1 - ideally I’d like to have tickets in a pay what you want model with a suggested min but not require anyone who can’t afford that to have to ask for a discount code etc and 2 - I’d like attendees to then automatically have access to a wiki)

Came out in 1991. Features an insanely good lineup of musicians. Who all (except for U2) created new music for the album - music that was intended fo sound like their music in ten years time.
Probably the soundtrack I’ve listened to more times than any other. And it still surprises me.

For reasons I browsed my friend's list on Facebook.
It is displayed in a completely utterly bizarrely random order - anything would be better than the choices they make in not sorting it.
But also the sheer number of people listed there who have deleted their accounts, have accounts set to remembering (because they are dead) or are dead but with still active accounts is staggering
And a lot of people have dramatically cut back on their usage so their profiles list old jobs, cities lived etc

From phones to mainframe systems and everything in between.
I don’t think most software developers have really internalized this

@npub1lrv…tth9 @npub17qu…4zw7 a second but equally important issue with cargo bike/ebikes is whether or not places people want to go to run errands have places to safely park a cargo bike or an ebike w/out it being damaged (or stolen). I've been considering getting a bike (when I get a bigger bike for my son) - whether it is an ebike (unlikely be possible) a lack of safe places to lock it up where I might want to go regularly as well as to secure packages limits which errands I could do with it

I also really want a return to the boring Internet. An internet with reliable trusted information, searches that don't try to think for me, and sites that really are from the local businesses I'm looking for (or are actual humans with real knowledge about a topic or area talking about it)

Like when we were shopping for a new refrigerator I vetoed any fridge that had “smart screen” tech. Instead we ended up with a truly great Fisher Paykel refrigerator. Which is elegantly simple in design (doesn’t have to figure out how to have space for electronics etc - so the interior is uncluttered.
I need a new beard trimmer. I don’t want one that is “smart”

I consistently find that the people who are truly great at what they do are almost always also generous in celebrating the successes and works of others in their field. And almost always well aware of the luck of their own successes
The folks who are zero sum in their thinking who bad mouth others, who only tout themselves (who form cliques and then only promote others if they feel they will get something from it). Those folks are almost always not as good as they think they are

They seem flashy, the reality is messier, and real reliable utility is “coming soon" but far from here. And even when/if it arrives I'm skeptical about when and how and why I would use such tools - even if they functioned as depicted

Random morning musing - most of the mail I get that isn't immediately recycled (mass mailed junk flyers etc) is solicitations for donations. Almost none is actual letters anymore (even most personalized mail is pre-printed cards with a short note or a printed photo montage "holiday" letter) all nice but I do miss old-fashioned letters and I imagine I'm not the only one.
I want to think about how to build a project at some scale that sparks people sending letters - for/from both adults and kids

@npub1alq…mnj6 I’m part of a FB group (actually two linked groups) for ttrpg collectors (one is an auction group, the other for discussions). Routinely people who were some of the earliest creators of ttrpgs buy and sell for their personal collections in the group (and have occasionally chimed in to verify their signatures or provenance of a particularly rare item)
It’s also a place that for the specific niche is better than eBay or most other online sites for selling or buying in the specific niche

(And almost certainly not the only place this happens - both with rents and via other similar software as price sharing mechanism to allow for price fixing by the biggest vendors in a given industry)
I would guess that there are also layers to this price fixing. Not just the software company and big landlords but likely some participation (and at least indirect pressure) from banks and other lenders

@npub1ecp…59pq a detail from the article - the CEO and his cofounders and a few of their celebrity investors got a chance to sell shares at the last massive fundraising (something that wasn’t disclosed to employees) so he likely walks away with millions (apparently has homes plural - and owns a professional pickleball team)
Even if they had debt the question remains what were they spending all that money on to incur that debt? It doesn’t sound like they bought assets like warehouses or trucks

@npub1ecp…59pq what I don’t get about such high profile closures is how you spend $1B so quickly. If they raised $1B around 18mths ago that implies they were spending $55.6M a month or so (over any revenues they had). Even with 1500 employees that implies either they were paying a lot more than $250k per employee or they had extremly high other costs. It’s clear they must have overspent but it feels like there are some parts of the story that haven’t come out yet as well.

My personal judge of such things on first look is whether I recognize the artists - if it’s all artists I know (whether I like them or not) I may like the playlist but am unlikely to discover much (beyond perhaps a new song by an artist I already know). This playlist however seems split between artists I know (and mostly ones I really like) and a bunch I’m much less familiar with - so looking forward to listening to discover some new to me artists.

When I went to renew it as they had closed the newsstand service the option they offered was a service that “helpfully” wanted to auto renew the subscription going forward. With no clear option to opt out.
I want to support magazines (digitally and in print) but most make it far harder than it should be to do either. (Print and digital newspapers as well)

@npub1lrv…tth9 I haven’t had that happen but I’ve had multiple good interactions with AAA in recent years. Twice for vehicle service (both tire related, came quickly and were very helpful) and we have home insurance from them - and they were remarkably easy to deal with when we had a serious issue (standing water in our crawl space due to a plumbing contractor who had poorly being an understatement installed the plumbing to our backyard. AAA was easy to deal with, paid quickly the full claim)

(And don’t try to find the French edition while searching google etc from the US. The results are comically bad. I did finally find a business that sells French language books globally and specializes in it. But of course this amazing company isn’t in google shopping results etc.

Even when they face backlash they continue in business (see Juul - yes they settled and paid hundreds of millions for targeting kids with their vape products and their products were banned by the FDA but eh are still legally on the market while the ban is worked out. But they also made over $2B last year)

Original Coca-Cola contained cocaine, but in the years since they changed to use the same plant without the drug and to do so have lobbied for exemptions in every drug law and international treaty (see https://www.eater.com/23620802/cocaine-in-coca-cola-coke-recipe-gastropod)
Perdue Pharma - while the Sacklers who own it have basically negotiated their way out the company made highly addictive drugs, pushed them by claiming they weren’t and have been found highly liable

@npub1zdp…vqv8 I first met an out Trans person while in high school, she was a fellow regular at a local gaming store (which despite being a place founded by mostly old white men to play military miniatures games, was welcoming and supportive of her). It was remarkable largely because it wasn't anything unusual she was just another gamer playing many of the same rpgs and other games we were all playing (this was in the late 1980's so it was, in fact, pretty unusual)

@npub1a4c…t2kf over two decades ago (this was in the late 1990’s I worked for a client that was a huge bank. The scale they worked on was hard for people to grasp.
At the time the bank has over $1T in assets in management.
But that was dwarfed when my client merged with another very large bank. In one weekend one server (at the time a massive IBM mainframe) cleared over 20% of the global currency trades. Which at the time was I think around $1.5T (daily volume)

As in “present how to do…” (where the form of presentation is flexible) vs
“Write five paragraphs each no more than five sentences long with an introduction and a summary paragraph etc”
My favorite teachers often were very strict and had high expectations about what we were learning but gave us lots of flexibility about how and what we turned in as work.

@npub1p9k…865w for iPad I can see a day view with screentime (I don’t use screentime for my own account just for my son’s account but I don’t think the day view is only for kids accounts). It’s very useful for seeing how much time my son has used various apps.
It looks like ScreenTime for the MacOS can show by a single day at least in Ventura (see https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/track-app-and-device-usage-in-screen-time-mchlf2c0c770/13.0/mac/13.0) does that not show what you need?

@npub1psd…9sr7 @npub1g3j…k5cu @npub1dme…ch6s a cause of this challenge is that the vast majority of all users of all software never customize it. While most software developers and tech staff at companies extensively customize and personalize the tools and systems they use.
(Per a PhD thesis I read years ago that studied fhis - it was true across all types of software they studied something like 90% of users just used the defaults as they got whatever systems OS or apps they used)
So default choices matter

@npub1mdk…aptk I’m seeing a lot more spam in FB groups, LinkedIn inmail from strangers offering lead gen or fitness services. And general spam in my email (including scammers trying to look like their are google that google didn’t detect as spam).
I’ve seen reports of a lot more spam/scam “books” in services like Kindle Unlimitted but I stopped using that years ago so haven’t confirmed - but actual authors I know who write books without AI have complained about the increase in scams

Anonymous as the default. Some may be touching. Others might be hard to read.
I suspect it would touch a nerve for many. I lost my father to cancer a few years before the pandemic. I miss him flaws and all. But for all those flaws (which were many) on balance I was fairly lucky.

@npub1lrv…tth9 no need to add the caveat “editorial page” I stopped reading it years ago but when I had a subscription (in print this was years ago) I canceled it because their non-editorial pages were just as much propaganda and editorializing as their editorial page & they dropped the truly non-partisan columns and sections that were once why I read it. Also the importance of the advertising that ran in it feel off (at one time the full page center ads were how big companies signaled the markets)

I’m not an Apple developer but I follow a lot of them and I’m very impressed by how quietly Apple has a lot of employees posting to the Fediverse about their work (folks who built APIs, developer documentation etc). I’m sure some of it is just geeks being up on the current Gen of tools. But it is also notable and reflects well on Apple’s culture. All of their posts are professional, full of direct useful links, well written and engaging.

Glad they are at least considering glass wearers and the custom inserts seems like an expensive but elegant solution. I don’t think I’ll be an early adopter but it makes it at least a possibility for me.

when I was a kid of about 10 I met a WWI (not WWII, WWI) veteran who lived in my town (he had lied about his age to enlist at 16). He remembered seeing and meeting Civil War veterans in his childhood (the last person with a Civil War pension actually died in 2020 a descendant of a veteran). As a kid I realized that some of those veterans he had met could have in their own childhoods met veterans of the Revolutionary War. My own great-grandparents whom I met were born in the 1800's

@npub1u3t…c6ug never heard of it and though Wiley is a respected publisher it’s gives me some vibes of being semi-self published (unclear if it is) but also that it has a very specific and conservative political perspective (all the language around arguing for limited government and while they acknowledge that much of what they cover is about white men they also say “that’s what we had to work with”
Their official website seems not very active after publication - a sign of a book that didn’t sell

Is there a sufficient critical mass of people interested in the same topic (especially if obscure) who are also a) aware of the new site b) engaged enough with that new site that they could see a given post c) actually see and respond to your specific post in a way that is respectful and encourages positive response not escalation

@npub1pqk…z65u could it be they don’t have a simple way to disable registrations? It may seem obvious. But they also seem to have decided to build everything themselves so easily could have missed some seemingly “obvious” admin/moderation/safety features - thinking they don’t need them/won’t need them yet. I think I have an older invite - haven’t tried it. Might do so if I ever get some free time but not in a great hurry.

Inspired by a #FollowFriday post on my timeline that suggested multiple accounts that haven’t been active in 3+ months. Did look interesting in both cases but either the linked accounts are not the correct instance or are for users who have slowed/stopped their Fediverse activity (at least at that account)
The implementation could be as simple as flagging @ suggestions if the account appears inactive (however this does require that however @ users are cached includes last activity timestamps

Feature idea for Fediverse clients - when autocompleting an account name either show their most recent post or highlight if they haven’t been active in some period of time (default to say past 14 days? Perhaps let users configure this for their own preferences) the goal here being twofold.
1) to help identity if you have used the right username - ie from the correct instance
2) to flag if you are @ referencing an account that is inactive as that’s rarely particularly useful

One of the markers of a new social media platform is the stars who, amongst that community, gain an audience and a voice. Not from having had one elsewhere, but organically via that platform.
This has happened on MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, TikTok, Vine, “podcasting” (less a single platform than the other examples) and it has happened on smaller networks - Orcut, LinkedIn etc.
Who are the current (and perhaps future) “stars” of the #Fediverse?

The big one being that Meta (like a LOT of other tech companies even including Apple) uses a lot of contractors and outsourced labor - in Meta’s case famously for content moderation which they outsource to subcontractor firms often not based in the US (they have faced lawsuits about the working conditions and poor pay in Kenya, India and elsewhere) US salaries for content mods are $20k-70k
all those workers at subcontractors don’t factor into the per employee estimates

#[0] I think the switching costs for social software are higher for many people (just setting up an account doesn’t really test social software - you also need to have folks to talk with - and for many asking a network to join you on a new platform is a big ask. Or you have to follow and interact with mostly strangers (which is also a big ask for many). Or for example your posted image of the Bluesky feed wasn’t all in English - as a non-speaker I couldn’t understand the feed w/o tools
