Trump and Musk are using subterfuge to hide the fact they are exploding unemployment, because high unemployment is unpopular and causes people to turn against politicians, and they need to prevent that from happening for long enough to complete their coup-in-progress and solidify their hold on power.
When they stop trying to hide how high unemployment is, you should be very afraid, because that will mean they think they've won.

This is also, by the way, why Musk wants to destroy the American social safety net. He wants people to be _desperate_ to find work, so that they will take jobs with poor wages and terrible working conditions. He wants people to be subservient to him and people like him. He wants a country chock-full of people who have no choice but to be servants of the rich if they want to stay alive.

So, what does Musk _really_ want? He wants to be able to hire people for less money, so that he personally can keep more money, and he wants to be able to abuse his workers without fear of them going to work elsewhere. High unemployment drives down wages and makes it harder for workers to switch to better jobs. Musk _wants_ higher unemployment, for exactly these reasons. He wants everyday Americans to suffer and be locked into bad jobs paying poor wages.

I probably don't have to explain Twitter, but just for completeness… Musk didn't buy Twitter to make money off of it. He is never going to make money off of it, and that will remain true regardless of how high or low unemployment is. Twitter is a propaganda tool for helping Musk and his allies destroy American democracy.

Now, on to SpaceX. What I said above about when your customer is the government applies 1000% to SpaceX. As long as the government wants to keep sending things into space, they're going to keep paying SpaceX to carry their payloads. Unemployment could be at 10% or 20% or 30% and SpaceX would still be raking in cash from the U.S. government and others all over the world.

Even if Musk weren't destroying Tesla's reputation by being a Nazi, high unemployment wouldn't be a big risk to its business, because its cars are a luxury good targeted at high-income consumers, a small segment of the population. Tesla will never sell enough cars to be a commodity item, so high unemployment won't greatly depress sales.
Also, much of Tesla's revenue is credits and rebates from green government programs. When your "customer" is the government, who cares about unemployment?

I just realized why DOGE is using deferred resignation programs (DRP) to get rid of as many federal workers as they can, rather than just firing all of them.
People who take the DRP and get put on paid administrative leave are still "employed" so they don't show up in the monthly unemployment numbers.
Trump & Musk don't want the unemployment numbers to be accurate because it'll make Trump look bad and accelerate the economic crash.
Has anybody seen this pointed out elsewhere?

All of the data that's protected more by Advanced Data Protection is already encrypted in the cloud even under Standard Data Protection, but the keys are stored in the cloud and Apple has access to them. When you enable ADP, the keys for those data are downloaded from the cloud to your devices, and then the keys are removed from the cloud.
That is, they don't reencrypt the data, they just change where the keys are stored.

* 5 emails from random domains which were probably legitimate rejects but there's a good chance my spam filter would have caught even if they hadn't been rejected.

* 5,142 messages from greasyfork.org rejected because their DMARC config is screwed up (as is, apparently, the fact that they are repeatedly trying to deliver rejected messages)
* 1 message from info@wikipedia.org that I can't tell whether is a good reject or a false positive due to bad config
* 1 message from no-reply@notify.proton.me that I also can't tell from the logs whether it should have been rejected

I have recently embarked on a no-holds-barred campaign to improve my sleep, after things got so bad that I was hallucinating instead of dreaming.
The first step was to evict the two cats from the bedroom at night; although my wife can sleep with cats pressed against her, I 100% cannot.
We hadn't done this before now because one of the cats, when excluded from the bedroom, stands outside the door and whines endlessly.
So the second step was earplugs.

Well, after a few days of the botnet relentlessly trying to log into the admin account on my NAS, an effort which was doomed to fail since the account with the username "admin" is disabled exactly to protect against attacks of this sort, the attack simply… stopped. There hasn't been a single login attempt in over four days.
This, to my mind, is final proof that it was a botnet. I went from over 300 different IPs trying continuously to log in, to 0, in an instant.

Since the notifications from my NAS about failed admin login attempts continue to pour in, I rewrote my script to make it even more automated. It now pulls the logs from the NAS directly so I don't have to take a screenshot from Synology Active Insights, parses the IP addresses out of the logs automatically, caches whois lookups so I don't have to keep reselecting abuse addresses to use, and keeps historical records of how many IPs have been attacking for the past 24 hours.

After waiting more than a month for my U.S. Representative, #AyannaPressley, to send a message to her constituent email list after I subscribed to it, she finally sends this message today, and it literally does not have a single word in it about what Trump and DOGE are doing or what she is doing about it.

The thing you can't tell when you see me staring stiffly into the camera in this segment is just that, i.e., that I am staring stiffly into my webcam, because _I can't see the news anchor who is interviewing me_.
She can see me on a screen in the studio, but all I'm seeing at my end is a white screen with some instructions on it about the mechanics of the interview.

I just bought 4 refurbished #Seagate drives to upgrade the storage in my NAS for more public service data archiving.
(Refurbished OK since I use RAID so if a drive fails I can replace it without losing any data.)
Each of the drives has a QR code to scan to verify that the drive isn't counterfeit.
Seagate has decided that a good security policy is to rate-limit users to one verification every few minutes.
Because, you know, it's not like people ever buy more than one drive at a time.

We're discussing on #debian-devel that by default dpkg syncs to disk at various points to protect against filesystem corruption if there's a crash or power failure during installs, but this makes installs significantly slower.
My laptops have batteries, and my desktop is protected by whole-house battery storage, so I took the plunge and turned off the paranoid syncing.
Updates (which I run frequently because I run Debian Testing) are _much_ faster now. It's a joy.

How is #Intuit so bad at everything except, seemingly, income-tax software?
They spammed me today at an email address which to my knowledge has never had an Intuit account associated with it. When I click the unsubscribe link it brings me to their login page. But I can't log in with that email address—no account!—so I can't unsubscribe.
This is both stupid and illegal; working unsubscribe links are a requirement of the CAN-SPAM act.
I sent them a #privacy complaint. We'll see what happens.

It is effectively impossible for any #software solution—full app, library, other component—to stop changing, regardless of how fully realized it is in purpose and function. No software lives in a vacuum. It runs on hardware on top of an operating system, it is interpreted or compiled by another piece of software, it depends on other software components which cannot, themselves, stop changing, it is vulnerable to newly discovered holes which must be patched.

I went to the intake appointment for a #clinicalTrial this morning. The research coordinator had me fill out several forms and surveys on his computer. Alas, the browser had form autofill enabled, so I was able to see the answers provided in text fields by previous study participants, which is, y'know, kind of a #HIPAA violation.

My kids have (so far) attended 5 undergraduate colleges / universities, and the payer user experience for the online payment system used by all five of them has absolutely sucked.
This is a great example of how the free market does not result in better products when the paying customer is not the end user. The people at the university either don't know or don't care that the app that parents and students use sucks, because they don't have to use it.

#COVID outbreak among the cast, crew, and band of the spring musical my son crewed for. They cancelled the final performance; ~7 cast/crew/band members have tested + so far.
My son is one of the few people who masks all the time (KN95) at school, but that may not have been enough. He's home today with a sore throat, though he hasn't tested positive (yet).
My wife and I attended the 2nd-to-last performance, masked. So far neither of us has symptoms or is testing positive.

This was the street in front of my house yesterday. The water was at least a foot and a half deep. The two storm drains in front of the house—the only two on the block, and both ends of the street are graded for water to flow to them—weren't clogged but simply couldn't keep up. Every member of the military is literally required, by their oath, training, and the military code, to evaluate the legality of every order they are given and to refuse to obey orders which they, personally, of their own initiative and thought processes, believe to be illegal.

My wife was injured today while hiking in Israel. She'll be fine, but she spent hours at the hospital being treated and tested to rule out internal injuries.
Because this happened on a Friday (the weekend in Israel is Friday/Saturday), the travel insurance office was closed, so she had to pay out-of-pocket for later reimbursement.
Total cost for a day in the hospital with lots of tests? ₪1,000, i.e., less than US$300.
This is what a functioning #healthcare system looks like.

@npub1qzc…yetl Not hundreds, not thousands, not even millions. By the time we're done dealing with the damage we've caused to our planet, it will have killed billions of people. Billions.
There are still ways to avoid that, but I think we've pretty much proven that as a society we're incapable of doing the right thing until much too late, eh?
Our only hope at this point is supremely powerful benevolent aliens showing up and forcing us to do the right thing.
