I'm not sure what refractory cement is made out of but I don't think it's that easy to find in a riverbed or such. Also it has a high R-value by design, so makes it a poor material for a heat exchanger. Ordinary clay will crack well below the temperatures you need.
I tend to think you want a big column filled with coal, lime, and iron ore, and then some way to blow a ton of air through it.
Or more realistically, if teleported back 5000 years, you primarily focus on staying alive and accept that technology doesn't tend to speed-run, even if you know in theory what's supposed to be done.

The problem with putting flu gas through a heat exchanger is they tend to tar up. So practically speaking, it needs to be all straight tubes with a removable header so you can brush them out.
Yesterday's discussion about HCCI got me to thinking about wood gasification again because the whole idea becomes a lot more realistic when you imagine an engine that starts immediately (on diesel) and gives you all the time in the world to get the fire working perfectly...

Forgot to mention this earlier, the technical term for that is HCCI.
If these engines were widely available, I'd be quite interested, but the problem is if you want one, you basically have to build it from scratch.
You can also get partial HCCI by putting propane, alcohol or other fuels into the air intake of a regular diesel. When you have it tuned right, the pressure from the injection fire event causes the last bit of heat needed to make all of the fuel go off. When it's wrong you get horrible preignition, but I think it should be possible to detect when you're getting close, and either throttle the air, retard the timing, or reduce the amount of added fuel.
Interesting though, I believe diesels with propane added to the intake have been measured with worse thermal efficiency, I'm not sure anyone knows why.

Ok, I get the benefit. They can do compression ignition AND port-injection because there's no such thing as preignition. Whenever the fuel mixture decides to ignite, that's TDC.
They're advertising low NOx because they don't have an injector, so they don't have rich spots, lean spots, and hot spots. They say there's no flame because they're relying on what would otherwise be referred to as preignition or knock, so everything in the cylinder is going bang at basically the same time, there's no flame-front or injection event.
Port injection + compression ignition is a big deal, so yes, I get it now.

Also, the idea that you can't write a letter without hiring a lawyer to do it is a scam made up by Big Law.
And if it ends up in court, judges actually make MORE effort to interpret your words into the correct legal framework than they would if you had a lawyer.

Nice thing about the follower model is it allows for infinite dimensional reputation rather than trying to condense everything down to one number and make everyone live with it.
Here's an idea (unsure if it would work): You see a post, you don't know who posted it or boosted it, you can click "follow" to follow the person who wrote it (you might be already, you won't know). You'll get more of their posts, but you won't be able to decipher what comes from whom.
There needs to be enough error/noise introduced that you can't just setup 1000 bots and have each one follow one post only.

Romania Update:
The person with the most votes is George Simon, a guy who campaigned with Georgescu (the one who was banned from running). Now there will be another election in a few weeks to decide between the top and 2nd.
The 2nd is a math professor who is very popular, is not a politician, and is the favorite of my wife.
One day after Simon came in with the most votes, he was seen at the airport boarding a plane to Vienna. Vienna is of course an intelligence hotbed so anyone with a head on his shoulders knows this looks like he's doing deals with RU.
The whole situation is fucked, if they ALSO ban this guy from running, they might as well skip elections because they're pointless anyway - but if he wins, he might well be a foreign asset (*cough* Obama).

Ahh, good ol' tech debt.
As I recall, each pad type is kind of it's own thing and it uses the chainpad library and then pushes messages out through the secure iframe to the crypto layer that is on the outside. They don't really share that much.
I'm not sure how you would do it without implementing it on each pad type separately, you might have to at least add a hook to each one...

The court system is really losing credibility. They've always kind of made stuff up as it suits them (Wickard v. Filburn) but now with the internet, everyone can second-guess them and have an opinion.
The big problem is that there's no realistic replacement. Possibly some kind of AI lawyers with massive-multiplayer-online-jury where jurors are given abstract philosophical questions which provide the glue that maps the facts of the case to an abstract model of law so that the actual judgement is something that can be checked with a proof verifier.

Welp, second try with GPIO and it's also a fail.
This time I'm blaming the vendor because they claimed 3.3v was enough to switch their relay block and it is NOT. Even 5v doesn't do it, it takes 12v to switch the relays.
I'm officially done playing EE, the point of this project was to be *easy*, so I just ordered a relay module that I can talk to via USB.

The problem with most 32 bit is it's a compatibility layer for old binaries, so it's an older / trashier instruction set.
What I want is 64 bit registers, 64 bit syscalls, entire system is 64 bit, but, you know that you're never going to have a pointer above 2**32 so you can encode pointers as 32 bit values.
It looks like this is possible already, and it's just ABI/compiler/loader shit to make it work.
mmap() already has a flag MAP_32BIT to require that the mapping goes in the lower 32 bits.
It's probably possible to compile libc/linker/loader with like __INTPTR_WIDTH__ 32 and so on, but telling the compiler to make 64 bit assembly 😈 , and then just patch in a syscall shim so that syscalls are done correctly with 64 bit words.

This SEEMS like a really good idea.
I want something where all of the default packages are tested together and you get what you get (like Mac or Windows does).
I don't want to go doing some apt-get (or dnf) command and have it do some sneaky library upgrade and then end up with a mix-match of versions that's never been tested together before.
The whole atomic thing is cool but what's more important to me is that when I get an update, I'm getting a *system* update, i.e. an update to a new system version that has been tested by someone....
I see the main options from UBlue are with KDE or Gnome. I have (bad) experiences with both of them, but it's been a long time. My "user story" is I'm gonna add my CPU monitor and digital clock with seconds (hillbilly load indicator) and then I'm never gonna touch the UI configuration again. Which one do you think has the lesser chance of giving me a bug when I go to on "Network Settings" or open the file manager to grab a download?
I take it your answer will probably be KDE, but I wanted to confirm.

Ok so it sounds like this rumor about crude transporters sometimes running on crude is indeed just a rumor. I only heard it 2nd hand so I have no confidence in it myself.

I understand that some crude carriers have been known to run crude in their engines, but only in the open ocean running at full power, and probably it's only possible with certain grades of crude.
What I'm talking about, fuel oil in a diesel, is interchanging between two well defined fuel types which are much more similar in nature.

It would be cool to take a 50kw diesel generator and sell it as an outdoor oil heater.
It goes in a little shed and runs on furnace oil and the coolant is circulated to your heated floors or whatever in your house while it makes power to sell to the grid.
Normally you lose a lot of energy to exhaust, but a good heat exchanger should be able to push the efficiency way up - especially if your in-floor heating is ok to run with relatively low temperature fluid.

Trump isn't going to get rid of Musk, he'll just use this as an opportunity to put him in his place.
Right now, The Swamp is lusting after the prospect auditing everyone in Silicon Valley and throwing the full weight of the law against them.
Trump is going to make a killing selling get-out-of-jail-free cards, but I think Tesla (and maybe X) are going to have to take at least a slap on the wrist, for optics reasons.
