The problem with putting flu gas through a heat exchanger is they tend to tar up. So practically speaking, it needs to be all straight tubes with a removable header so you can brush them out.
Yesterday's discussion about HCCI got me to thinking about wood gasification again because the whole idea becomes a lot more realistic when you imagine an engine that starts immediately (on diesel) and gives you all the time in the world to get the fire working perfectly...
