Forgot to mention this earlier, the technical term for that is HCCI.
If these engines were widely available, I'd be quite interested, but the problem is if you want one, you basically have to build it from scratch.
You can also get partial HCCI by putting propane, alcohol or other fuels into the air intake of a regular diesel. When you have it tuned right, the pressure from the injection fire event causes the last bit of heat needed to make all of the fuel go off. When it's wrong you get horrible preignition, but I think it should be possible to detect when you're getting close, and either throttle the air, retard the timing, or reduce the amount of added fuel.
Interesting though, I believe diesels with propane added to the intake have been measured with worse thermal efficiency, I'm not sure anyone knows why.
