I dislike her proposed solution, though. I don’t want to be "rescued by Microsoft", or by Azure / AWS / GCP revenue. I don’t want billionaires to sponsor me, or shady BTC payment companies to buy my goodwill with spare-change zaps while driving Nostr users away.
I want users to fund software and break out of the techno-feudalism cycle where a few billionaires control and cash out the multiplier effect of technological progress. I want users to run their own software and infrastructure, to fund software that matters to them, to sponsor developers directly, to learn how to weaponise FOSS licences like the AGPL (no need to "rug pull" if you pick an anti-exploitation licence from the start), and to be free.
I know this is a heavy message for a Sunday morning, but honestly, it doesn’t matter if you’re on Nostr, Mastodon, or anything else. If you aren’t willing to sponsor and contribute to the free internet (and it doesn’t need to be through coding), you’re still just a product at best and a slave at worst.
It’s time to stop talking about doing the thing and actually start doing the thing. Which devs have you zapped lately? How much have you spent on Nostr? What proportion of your sats have gone to benefit this community? Be it donating to client devs, relay runners, "Other Stuff" research, and so on. that is the idea here, 6xxxx events are “implicitly” signed by the relay, and can be customized depending on AUTH.
A kind 1 event says nothing about where the event came from (you have to trust the npub, which can look like phishing), while a relay specific kind can be shown differently in clients as a more trusted event.
These notifications could also include simple action buttons that start a “framed nostr app” — an iFrame/webview which can talk to the parent app to request permission to sign events, etc.
Many clients also rebroadcast events they receive so this kind 1 could spill out of the intended relay. Adoption of - is still not very common. (not to mention, malicious relays could collect private - events while pretending to reject them)

Yes, this is the thing. Open-source collaboration through PRs only really works smoothly, if you're somehow part of the project team and have regular collaboration.
Otherwise, it's better to submit an issue or fork. And I don't really see the value in PRing a fork, to be honest, as you're just trying to demo the functionality and if the core repo owner likes it, they can just add it themselves and will be happier with the result.

An event kind which can be integrated into notifications sounds like the best idea to me.
The goal here is private notifications from a relay to a user. I would use this for renewal notifications.
With it being relay based users can trust it (as a special display could be used showing it came from a relay), and compared to a DM (which can be unreliable), it just fits into notifications normally.

I do not think lightning is as easy, or intuitive people say it is, and people who propose it typically tend to utilize centralized services which address most of the harder aspect to it.
It's not about what's easy for a 120+ iq European/American earning $65,000 to $130,000+/year could do it.
It's about whether or not someone in a poor region could open, and self host a lightning channel.
I would say I'm a fairly competent person myself, and I have dabbled with lightning as well, and I am aware of people who I believe to be more technically capable, and more intelligent than me, who have also had issues especially with routing, etc. Including Bitcoin Maxis who preach the virtues of lightning.
It is not that they do not like it, it is that they are not aware that it can happen, especially on price spikes. The fake borrowing scheme hides the fact that what you are actually doing is marging trading. When NGU you are good, when NGD you will loose more then simply selling what you had when you needed the money.

I think the kind range 6xxxx should be reserved for relay-signed events.
These have a sig field of “relay” but otherwise act mostly like normal events.
One use case I am thinking of is a way for relays to notify users of information like them getting access, subscription expiry, or updates.
You AUTH and then ask for kind 60001 events, which are from the relay.self pubkey.

I've also found that most repo owners are just annoyed by PRs. They'd rather you write an issue and let them think up a solution that fits their architecture.
Also, PRs make you a contributor on their repo, which they might not want. Especially, if they are applying for funding, they want to be seen as Sole Creator.
I published an infra project, but nobody has even looked at it. Completely single-solution. I mean, nobody really looks at any open-source code, anyway. The few people who want to collaborate can just share a repo or create an endpoint and define that.
And it's sort of pointless, now, since AI can recreate the functionality without seeing the code.
I forked Jumble and Wikistr, and then completely gutted them and replaced the entire code base. No user can tell the difference because the basic design stayed the same.

### Definitions
- **Module**: A group of program statements that have a defined beginning and end, collectively referenced by a module name, and can be called from other modules. Corresponds to the "function" in most modern languages.
### Problem Structure
Composite analysis begins with the problem structure. A piece of software is typically comprised of several problem structures. The problem structure is a rough sketch of the problem the software is attempting to solve. It is presented in functional, rather than procedural, terms. ### External Data Streams
After the problem structure is defined, the next step is to identify the streams of data that are both external and conceptual. External streams of data are those that begin and/or end outside of the system. Conceptual streams of data are those containing related data.
### Points of Highest Abstraction
From the identified external streams of data, the next step is to determine the points of highest abstraction for those streams. Data is transformed as it moves through the problem. From the starting input, there comes a point where input stream seems to disappear, as its data has transformed into a form that no longer resembles its origins. That point is called the Most Abstract Input Data. When the problem is viewed in reverse, from the ending output, a similar point can be found, the Most Abstract Output Data. The section of the problem in between the Most Abstract Input and the Most Abstract Output is the Central Transform. Sometimes, there is no Central Transform, and the point of Most Abstract Input and Most Abstract Output are the same.
Visually, the parts of the problem structure become as follows:

### Functional Decomposition
Following from the determination of the points of highest abstraction, the next step is decomposition. The problem structure is broken into three parts: the major input stream, the central transform, and the major output stream. Take each part and describe it as a function, with its inputs and outputs. The input and output streams usually have no input nor output, respectively. From these three submodules, the process of composite analysis can repeat, treating each as a subproblem, which will have its own problem structure and points of highest abstraction. The recursion continues until the subproblems cannot be broken down further.
#### Formatting Decompositions
If a program contains modules A, B, and C, where A calls B and C, and B calls C, the functional decompositions would be notated as follows. Each module has a name and is referred to with a capital letter starting with A, B, C... then AA, AB, AC... and so on. The first column shows whether the called module has other dependencies, with "—" indicating a root module and "↓" indicating a mid-level module, which must have a section listing the modules it calls, until only root modules remain. Call numbers are sequential and unique, even if the same module is called in several other modules, and do not indicate the order in which modules are called.

- **Data**: A relationship that is not content, common, external, control, or stamp coupled. All input and output are passed as arguments or return variables. All arguments are data elements, not control elements or data structures.
- **Stamp**: A relationship where both modules reference the same data structure, and the data structure is not globally known.
- **Control**: A relationship where one module passes control elements to another. Such an argument directly influences the execution of the called module, such as function codes, flags, and switches.
- **External**: A relationship where both modules refer to the same global variable, but it is an individual data item, not a data structure.
- **Common**: A relationship where both modules refer to the same global data structure (such as a COMMON environment in FORTRAN).
- **Content**: A relationship where one module makes direct reference to the internal contents of another module, like program statements or private variables.

I would look at it from the jobs to be done framework. What job do you want your client to perform? Is it doing a good job of that?
Some jobs: entertainment, education, passing of time, humor, news.
If you ask me, I'd say nostr fails on all fronts for the general public because we lack the variety of content that engages. Now, it does work for some people, like me, and bitcoiners mainly.
So if you're building a client, focus on what you want it to be good at, and do it in an innovative manner. Simply copying an incumbent wont work because they have way more creators and highly refined engagement methods they've been testing for a decade.
Biggest evidence of this being the case is people who joined and stayed around for over a year and left. If you ask them, they'll probably say something something echo chamber, got bored.

I want to pre-face that I'm merely adding nuance to the conversation, not making excuses. There should be no excuses for fixing actual bugs, perhaps other than that they are super hard to fix.
First point I want to touch on is the idea of cross-compatibility between clients. I don't think you brought this up, but I know others have in the past. Clients having different features that do not align with one another is a feature, not a bug. Nostr does not have a defined spec beyond what kinds you can use. All the NIPS are possibilities, not requirements. So, with this lens, I think it's important to understand that different clients will have very different features, and that is by design. It's something to embrace, not to try to "fix". Again, I don't think you said anything about this, but just putting it out there for anyone else reading.
Relay management - this boils down to content as I said. It doesn't matter how well you manage your relays, if the content is not there it's not there. Could the UX get better? Absolutely. Will it help? I would guess not at this point. I use Jumble daily and I browse different relays and see seemingly different content but ultimately its the same people saying slightly different things on different relays. It's boring. Because of this I don't even want to check the relays. I do just to see what's up, but nothing is up. To truly make relay management useful and interesting, you need a lot of content to differentiate relays. But, if you think about the kind of garbage you see on X, even their numbers won't warrant super interesting relays if they switched to that model. You might get a reddit-like browsing experience but ultimately it's the same 1% of users who post everything. It could be interesting and useful at scale, but not at our scale.
Pull to refresh - This to me sounds like a feature request - one that warrants active decision to include. As you know we have a different culture here from what we consider "normie fiat" apps. We value other things. For me, one of those things is not hijacking my attention to the maximum and gamifying every action. I know some clients have chose to go down that path (yakihonne) and I even considered it at one point and proposed myself, but I've come to a realization that I would rather build in mechanisms to prevent or limit addiction than to add to it. Pull to refresh is a gambling mechanic that I have considered for x21, but ultimately chose against. This was a conscious choice not to include. But, since we have such a different variety of clients, people can use others that might choose to implement it, or already do -- I don't know if any do because I haven't done a fresh round of tests recently.
Discovery / onboarding - discovery is a function of content again. Yes, we can introduce methods to get people to subscribe to hashtags, to pick interests, even centralize feeds (Primal) or even introduce algos, but ultimately all of those things will boil down to not showing anything interesting to the vast majority of dopamine-jacked brains that expect instant gratification, infinite loads, pull to refresh etc... This is a walled garden / community issue to solve, much of which depends on marketing initiatives, not so much design. We can improve the design but it's a fruitless effort at the moment. Primal already has good onboarding, better than any other social media I've tried (I tested all major ones), and the feed is still full of bitcoin content.
Infinite load issues - these are probably bugs and bugs should be fixed. I will not make excuses for persistent bugs. BUT, I want to give credit to devs who are fixing things all the time and have had github issues outstanding for some time trying to get to all of them. I also want to give credit to people like @npub1zaf…26k5 who started interoperability issue tracking and devs who actually try to fix those things, BUT, I would also point to the very first paragraph to say that some of this is not a problem, but a feature, by design.
DMs - I can't speak much on this, I have tried Keychat and it worked fine for me. There were issues with names or something but I have not tested recently. It seems like White Noise might be good too, though i haven't used it much. Client DM implementation is an individual choice. Some clients (like x21) do not even want DMs -- this is developer choice, nothing to do with UX. It's a bitcoiner culture thing, not something that must be hammered to perfection.
Content fetching / loading of reactions etc.. all has to do with relay connections and caching. This is ultimately a difficult problem and requires local solutions such that @npub1xts…kk5s is working on. Relay on device type of thing. It'll get better. This is a technical / engineering issue, not a designer UX issue.
I write all of this not as an excuse, but to shine a light where others may not have looked or considered. There are limits to what we can replicate from the central server world, and we need to consider how much effort we should make, vs embrace what we're better at.
What bugs me, is people who swing by overnight (not you), and claim to know the problems of nostr (UX) and offer quick solutions (as I tried). It's as if all of these things have not be considered before. Like, we are too dumb to see that other apps work buttery smooth from a database. A lot of these observations are rooted in experiencing ONE client and not even trying the other 90% that do those things that the one lacks in MUCH better. I've tested the onboarding of all fiat apps and they all suck. What makes them sticky is their content. We can focus to improve the 20% roughness of nostr clients, or choose to find ways to bring more people here that will actually stick around -- I think we should focus on finding ways to bring people who will stick around.
On that note, there's a lot to be said about focusing on the strengths of nostr - exploring other stuff and how it can be interwoven with the social stuff. And we're doing this every day. I'm doing it, and I know others are too.

There was a time when I'd hear criticism from people for exclusively using nostr. At the time I suppose I had some reservations about intentionally creating a filter bubble.
At this point I mostly hear praise from people for not watching the news or using any other social media. Most of the reactions I get are closer to jealousy than criticism. I lost any concern of the downsides somewhere along the way to this point.
The benefits are clear in my own life.

The ability to track the funds is a feature. Your argument leaves the door open for a large subset of the UTXOs being fully fungible and private, namely paranoid cryptoanarchists like us. Bitcoin is useful for creating a highly transparent credit system, but it is not going to be turned into a single centralized social credit system. A fork of it might be, unfortunately, but there will always be that escape hatch for libertarian radicals who just won't give up.

As someone who played Trackmania a lot in its early years, these videos never fail to amaze me. Yeah a big problem is that the government has virtually unlimited resources, making the idea of due process some what laughable these days, especially with anything federal. And if the government does lose after all those resources are spent, who cares? It was taxes and money printing. The people involved lose nothing and actually got a paycheck for doing it! And if we sue the government and some how win damages, we also pay for that lol
The only solution I can come up with is a financial penalty for the officials involved in these cases. "Are you sure, because you can get sued if you're wrong?" That has some downsides, but it would probably end most of the ridiculous nonsense.

I think people like us who live on a Bitcoin standard will be fine though. The issues, in my opinion, will largely be with those trying to play fiat games in a Bitcoinized world. The games will hit a hard wall at some point, throwing people off the ride. Someone at some point will pay the bill that's due. We aren't going to have a painless transition. It probably will be a sustained bear market like you say.
Owner of a diesel repair and performance shop we we friendly with just announced after a few years of litigation they will be bringing their case with the EPA to jury trial in the beginning of next year.
I wish them the best, very few have the courage and resources to take the federal government to court, after years of bleeding you dry and offering deals that keep you out of prison in exchange for the forfeiture of your business and accounts. That's if you're lucky. Criminal cases can start off with door kicking, arrests and asset seizure (which i've shared shared before)
Trials like this can cost shop owners millions in the long term, regardless if it's a win or a loss. In the meantime they put pressure on shops, owners and employees trying to find anything and everything they can to send you to jail. Even up to this point it cost them tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to pay their attorneys. And still under threat of escalations, seizing bank accounts (business and personal) raiding homes and businesses. That's not including the interruption of business, owners on weekly calls, spending long nights poring through paperwork, all while knowing if they make the slightest mistake they will be taken away from their families without hesitation.

We've always made a "loss" on frozen Bitcoin pricing because it went down before the transaction happened.
If you had priced everything for €100k Bitcoin, in May, and it's now at €88k and your transaction hits, then you're down 12% on the trade. Asking for a delay isn't a good strategy, as you don't know if it will go up or down, and trying to demand more Bitcoin will just make everyone angry.

USDT seems to be the king, as it's a familiar and relatively-stable unit. You can be censored by the US government, but they're reigning in most on and off-ramps, so they'll be able to do that with Bitcoin, as well. They can't freeze your Bitcoin wallet, but they can punish anyone who accepts Bitcoin from that wallet, which seriously crimps Bitcoin's utility.

Always resulted in a mass-exodus of people who couldn't figure out how to adjust by moving to other clients and relays.
The users with the most staying power seems to be my "generation", which arrived after the initial building phase and before Primal, so that we tried out different clients and figured out what relays and NIPs are, and stuff. It was a steep learning curve, but we're much more resilient.
It felt like learning how e-mail or SMS or telephones worked, before everyone used WhatsApp. The Primal onboarders are clueless and helpless, like the WhatsApp onboarders. If Primal goes down, they think Nostr is down. If WhatsApp goes down, they think all mobile communication is dead.

Something that isn't stable is a bad measure, in addition to being a bad currency. High volatility means Bitcoin is currently only useful as a store of value.
You can literally watch npub's zap amounts adjust up and down with the dollar price, and then they eventually peter out. Impossible to price anything.
I operate under the assumption that no one knows what the fuck they're talking about. The world doesn't operate on perfectly timed cycles, and Bitcoin will likely reflect that as more people adopt it.

The thing about Bitcoin is that you could cure any private imbalance by simply imprisoning or killing everyone who has an inordinate amount of it. Unlike a physical currency, it isn't lying around someplace, waiting to be dug up in a treasure chest or discovered in a bank lock box.
You don't have to receive any Bitcoin to personally profit from this; you just have to take some significant chunk off the market and the remainder would automatically rise in price.
Of course, if you did that too often, the price would _fall_, as people would become afraid to own any, lest they be seen as "money hoarders" and end up on the bad list.

This is all just “everyday stuff” to the standard nerd mantainer 🤓, documentation always have gaps.
And also please donate. Everyone has a threshold where they stop doing things purely out of the kindness of their hearts. Sure, it can last 20 or 30 years for some, but the equation is simple: more donations = more time spent doing FOSS work. No money, eventually no FOSS work.

Android is definitely the most insecure operating system out there. If you care about security you can't run any android device. The only device within the android ecosystem that are considered secure are google pixel devices and obviously better to run them with grapheneOS. Besides that out of the box and for top notch security only iPhones. Many like to bash apple but the fact that apple controls all elements from hardware to software creates a very secure product. The process is pretty straightforward, if I remember right. Use something like Balena Etcher to flash whatever distribution you want to use onto a thumb drive, then boot your computer into the BIOS and make sure it is selected to boot from that thumb drive before booting from the internal hard drive. Save and restart and it should prompt you to install your Linux distro and ask if you want to do so as a dual-boot with your existing OS, or overwrite the existing OS. Choose the former and you will need to tell it how much disk space to partition for your Linux distro.
I am sure you can find more detailed instructions with a pretty quick search, or on your chosen distro's website.

It’s super easy for any service to broadcast a Nostr event at the time of adding a track or album or playlist. It’s just a matter of them deciding to do this or not.
Simple things, e.g., hello world, are fine. But if you get in a little more complex architecture, it’s slop all the way down. What can be done in 5 lines of code will balloon into 50-100 lines of slop with bunch of repetition and lack of any architectural understanding

Files are hosted on blossom servers. Track and playlists are nostr events that contain all the info including url to track.
In RSS your files live on one server here the model is reversed, you host your own content if you like or use blossom servers and people discover it from you.
The big difference is that this is all easily discoverable in nostr and can live along other event types.

All value is theoretical. There is a reason that paper money trades like money. It's all just stuff people value as means to ends.
So basically yeah you're right it's sort of a credit system in the way you're leaning, but if it can be called credit, it is the strongest form of credit ever invented. It being a series of distributed ledgers within a distributed ledger with private enforcement all around and no authority, all in the same currency unit with no rehypothecation, it may as well be called real bitcoin, the way I see it.
#Amethyst does this with generic lists, but you need another client to edit the list itself. #Jumble lets you do this with lists of relays, but not users.
#Coracle does both, but uses custom feeds rather than lists for selecting the relays. However, this means you can combine the two so you can see posts from just a certain list of people and only their posts that are on a select group of relays. Coracle also allows you to edit the user lists, but only if they are not encrypted.

My view is lightning is a promise to pay Bitcoin, it's like a sort of Collateralized Credit but isn't finalized until the channel state is closed.
There's also no guarantee that those zaps are valid if someone rugpulls the channel against someone without a watchtower as well.
