i have a planter where i stick 'throwaway' cuttings that i'm not too invested in...sometimes it produces nice results. this 'Kiwi' aeonium produced some bright yellows because it was growing in full sun. the indoor plant is green with pink edges...still a nice look, though not as vibrant.

this year's succulent pot, likely hitting its peak before the cold weather comes. other than the echeveria in the middle, this pot was made from extra cuttings from my houseplants that would otherwise have ended up in the trash. ironically they now look much more lush than the mother plants, from the outdoor sunshine.

my little low-cost suiseki in its new home. rock, sand, and gravel all collected at the same shoreline, in the Canadian Shield.
almost everything up there is granite...even the sand is crushed up granite. (or possibly gneiss...i'm no geologist.) everything grows in a thin layer of topsoil there, because the bedrock was scraped almost bare by glaciers in the past.

volunteer lilac update: the Japanese lilac seedling spent about two months apparently just sitting there, surviving but doing nothing. i suspect it was using that time to generate roots. now it's putting out a nice flush of growth. the top four pairs of leaves have all come out in about the span of a week.

not so much weather as light. one of the central themes is the complicated relationship of light and dark. (this ties into the theme of Lucifer literally being the 'light-bringer.') light means different things in different contexts. e.g. sometimes light reveals, but sometimes it obscures things by being too bright. similarly shadow can be sinister, or protection from light that is too strong, i.e. shade.

i think i've kind of tried them all? when i set out to write a story, i don't worry about keeping within the guardrails of a particular genre. many good books have elements from multiple genres. ('Beloved' comes to mind.)
i'd probably hate writing pure genre fiction. mostly because the fandom gets worse, the deeper you go into subjects that mostly appeal to nerds with a grudge against the world that shunned them

but the popularity of an opinion does not make it correct. 'acknowledge the difficulty of the situation, and that you have not suddenly become an expert on every inflammatory issue because you can command a lot of likes' is an unattractive position.

i used to see this trend in queer fiction, where gay stories were funny, and lesbian stories were just Sad As Hell. or self-consciously absorbed with theory. it was like the difference between sass culture and drowning Ophelia.

@npub1zdp…vqv8 the details of the medical follow-up (no ambulance called, discharged before dying at home) are suspicious for medical discrimination as well. i don't know enough about head trauma to know if whatever complication caused Nex's delayed death could have been foreseen by the medical staff. but it sure is fishy as hell.

it's been a while since i've posted about Miss Tiny. she had an episode last fall where she was licking off big patches of her belly fur. (you can't see the problem area in this photo.) vet suspects it was a food allergy, and she is probably right; the hair loss stopped after we switched to a hypoallergenic food. the fur is growing back now, but slowly. i'm hoping the regrowth speeds up around springtime, once the cats start replacing their coats.

@npub1zdp…vqv8 @npub1hw2…f35q i have the opposite regret that i never pursued chemistry past gr 10 (which was still a general science course that covered chem + physics + bio). i dropped out of 11th grade chem because of [turmoil] and because the instructor was not very good. not because she was mean or anything - she was just fresh out of teacher's college and obviously very green. i suppose some class had to be her first, and it happened to be us. 🤷 oh well. but i've always wished i'd continued in chem.

@npub1zdp…vqv8 i've noticed a lot of white women get extremely touchy when you try to discuss realistic vs. unrealistic perceptions of crime. some of them have invested a lot in the idea that the streets are dangerous; they get mad at you for pointing out the ways that this narrative is manufactured. generally by conservatives pushing for more repressive policing, or the rollback of civil rights.

@npub1zdp…vqv8 what's even more important than the device itself is getting a good provider. audiologists and hearing specialists vary widely in skill and in adherence to best practices. a good hearing aid will do a lousy job if it isn't programmed correctly; OTOH even a fairly basic hearing aid can sound pretty good if it's programmed well.
my patients do quite well with Phonak. but i wouldn't necessarily endorse them above all other brands for every situation--other brands can be just as good.

@npub10pr…qn7d it would be interesting to see if there are studies that compare handwriting alone, typewriting alone, and a combination of the two processes. (for instance, brainstorming using handwriting, then typing up final drafts and using word processing for revision.)
if there are different advantages to both processes then using both for different parts of the task would presumably take advantage of the best of both worlds.
