a lot of the dramatic tension comes from the fact that the protagonists have to keep secrets from each other. one of the themes is how secrets--particularly forced secrecy, like having to live on the DL--poison relationships, and the self. the sort of damage that happens when vital parts of yourself are deprived of the oxygen they need to survive.
