I paid off our small house - and a piece of government paper says we own it. But we still have to pay $600/mo rent to the govt and rising. Housing costs increase every year due to rent increases and increasing cost of maintenance.

When rent/buy become unaffordable, people live in a tent. (Or car, if they can afford that.) Yes I know many. The police make sure they do not plant vegetables or do anything else productive near their tent (this is actually in the law - you can camp on public property, but not do anything productive). Owning some means of production is key to human dignity. Marx recognized this (but his "solution" has the government take away all means of production from individuals).
One thing that was not apparent in the industrial revolution is that advancing technology makes the means of production ever smaller. It is only immature technologies that are heavily centralized because of the huge capital investment needed. Steam looms used to be a huge investment - now you can get a small powered loom for your workshop. Computers used to be a huge investment - now the poorest carry one in their pocket. Spaceflight currently requires a huge investment. But eventually it will be like a Heinlein novel, where a family buys a used spaceship and goes on a tour.

In this case it wasn't clear. She was born with female parts, "clearly" a girl at birth, raised as a girl, and only DNA testing revealed that he was genetically a guy with developmental issues. Unlike the transgender people, this guy/gal was not trying to deceive anyone (afaik - who knows). It was probably shocking to discover as an adult that he is not a girl after all.

That doesn't solve the problem at the Olympics. The Algerian boxer was born with female parts and raised as a woman. But he/she has XY chromosomes. (Probably those estrogenic chemicals in the environment Alex Jones goes on about.) So if you define "woman" as XX chromosomes, then the parents in Algeria legit did not "know what a woman is". If you define "woman" as "female parts", then he/she is a woman.

The whole point is to reduce population (and profit in the process). "Private" can have several meanings and shades thereof. One emphasis here might be that the key mapping is not run by a globalist corporation.
A key (in at least two senses) database must be resistant to forgery (TLS cabal forges site cert), censorship (ICANN cancels domain), disaster (replicated across multiple geographic areas).
Another solution would be for everyone to run their own DNS server with DNSSEC and ignore ICANN. But that is a big stretch (normies don't know what DNS is).
There is an existing block chain - namecoin (info page at namecoin.org). That is already used for secure, distributed, censorship resistant key value mappings, including domain names and pgp keys. That is where I put my keys.
I wonder why Proton did not use that? It does cost namecoins to create a domain, but updates/renewals require only a transaction fee. Maybe there were scaling concerns. Jeremy (namecoin founder) himself may have requested a separate chain.

Web search seems to indicate that you need a lightning node to provide a lightning address. I have bitcoin, not a lightning node. So the mutiny wallet requires that I install a lightning node? I was looking for a custodial lightning address to get started. But others have recommended I keep working on getting a self-hosted lightning node and run it as a leaf node (which doesn't require 24/7 uptime).

All the suggestions people have made were not accepting new customers. I have had self-custody BTC since its inception. Do you have a non-phoneapp recommendation for Lightning wallet? Currently investigating strike.me (zap) which is said to be on github and is a self-custody LN. I did not want to deal with self-custody for layer 2, but have been assured it is not that hard for leaf nodes - which apparently only needs to be up when you (and other local users) are using it.

One thing I found from my less than expert historical research is that the optimum global CO₂ level is 400 ppm. 300 is too low, and generally has resulted in famine. It's almost as if famine (without totally destroying ecosystems) is the point.

They do understand "names of websites", and I get buy in on a first step of renting a domain name from an ICANN registry and using it for email - even if hosted on gmail. They understand that this gives them the power to change vendors (at least until ICANN cancels their domain) or even self-host. Most registrars also offer WordPress websites.

What *is* the "new internet" was introduced to the public in the 1980s - public key cryptography (I remember where I was sitting in the college library when I read the SciAm article on public keys, knapsack and RSA algorithms. PGP was revolutionary. Now we *can* have authenticated IPs.

Having used "the internet" since 1975 (still have the first protocol spec), I would define "internet" as peer connections carrying IP protocol.
We also had uucp net, which was a transport independent store and forward network. We collected all known peer connections in a text file and ran a graph analysis overnight to optimize routes (bang paths) to destinations.
Today, no one seems to know what a "peer" is anymore. From questioning people about what the "internet" is, I get the idea they think it is their web browser. I.e. HTTP(S) is the only protocol they care about (and indirectly though unknowingly DNS and TLS CAs). Even smtp, they have only experienced through some web client (usually gmail).
The term "protocol" is unknown - except in classical schooling groups where they practice social protocols at formal dinners, concerts, and other events. This is relevant, and a starting point.

When I was in my early teens, women dominated software and men dominated hardware. I was too young to lug around 50lb disk drives and other hardware stuff, so I got started in software with the ladies. I took a typing class - also still mostly ladies. It proved invaluable.
Like weaving and sewing (and unlike physically moving heavy objects), these skills move back and forth in popularity with the sexes. In the 18th century, tailoring and dressmaking (as opposed to fitting) was typically a male profession. Weaving was a male profession - unless industrialization revolutionized the trade.

I call it the original (OG) web or decentralized web. I watched big tech run constant ads for people to give up their independent web sites that ran on their own desktop computers and "for just a small percentage or even just collecting marketing info we'll run your whole online life for you!" No changing UPS batteries (video of secretary crawling around under a desk to do that because of poor setup). We make backups for you! (And for the feds.) etc etc
The BIG weapon against the deep state was crypto. The OG web was decentralized and pretty much uncensorable, but entirely unencrypted and unauthenticated. IP forgery was a thing. Forging usenet articles was a common joke (especially on April 1).
Now we have the tools for authenticated IPs and e2e encrypted packet delivery, and a number of protocols for that.
Please note that ICANN DNS and cabal TLS are totally centralized and censored. One thing that could be incorporated into Nostr is a .NOSTR (or other) tld (ala .BIT) where nameservers are shared via Nostr. ICANN DNS would only be used for onboarding.
The globalist TLS cabal can forge and MITM any TLS web site. You can't rely on it. While a private TLS CA is appropriate for an enterprise like AT&T, what better fits Nostr is to use make connections using one of the authenticated overlay mesh networks like yggdrasil or cjdns or pinecone. The dendrite Matrix server incorporates pinecone. Fedora and Redhat offer Cjdns. Yggdrasil is a golang thing - easily compiled if you don't care about downloading random dependency versions from the internet during build (you should - but that makes building a lengthy research project for all the dependencies).
Someone started an yggdrasil-js project - which would fit right in with Nostr web clients (but isn't ready yet).

Also note that TLS is also a scam. Yes. Subsistence farming (or more practically, hunting/gathering) SHOULD be the bottom line fallback in case of extremely oppressive employment - NOT an ideal way to live. The problem with industrial Britain was that oppressed workers had nowhere to do it (farming/hunting/gathering). All the land was owned by aristocrats. This drove the attraction to socialism (replacing oppressive capitalists with oppressive government, which somehow never goes away on its own as promised by Marx).

I've gotten almost all family and friends using Matrix on a server I host (or my brother hosts). It is quite a bit heavier than XMPP, but feels like Signal/WhatsApp/Telegram to them.

Like with Vit D, Mg, Iodine, Vit K, etc, etc the dose makes the poison. For a pasty white Scottish complexion like mine, 12 min / day full summer sun is optimal. Dark skin needs more. Red hair, albino, further north - need less.
Sunrise and sunset are the best times to get more subtle benefits of sunlight. The UV has been mostly filtered out, so no Vit D (or cancer). But the light does good things for mood and vision.

I got rid of my car in 2005. Biking is faster and more convenient within a 10 mile radius (unless a big load needs to be carried). Combo of bike and public transportation is convenient (but slower than car) within 20 mile radius. Also note that driving a car has 3 times the death/injury rate *per mile* of biking or walking. (Bus/train is 5 times safer per mile than driving a car.) Car accidents (not gun murders) used to be the leading cause of death, but now sugar/alcohol/opioid abuse/addiction takes the lead.
The only thing more dangerous than driving a car is driving a motorcycle - those are 5 times more dangerous per mile.
We keep a car for my wife - a one car family like in the 1950s.
Back in 2005, the cheapest used economy car was $400/mo (gas+insurance+maintenance+depreciation). Don't even think about borrowing for a car. Those factors change over the life of a car. As the car ages - maintenance goes up, depreciation goes down, you can drop collision from insurance.
I haven't done detailed pricing, but my impression is that today the cheapest used economy car is $800/mo.

That "getting rid of existing programs" is indeed the stumbling block. As mentioned in my lengthy post, I would consider converting individual govt handouts to UBI as progress (e.g. Food Stamps). But govt has tricky ways to pretend they have removed a program - but really just hidden it.

Depends on what you mean by "Daily driver". VMs are reasonably efficient at compute, disk, network. They are annoying when it comes to graphics. I do run Win10 in a vm to do taxes - but I'm glad it is only once a year.
Why not just run Start9 in a VM in your existing Ubuntu server?
I just bought another server with ECC ram for $70 (plus shipping and RAM upgrade). So that is another avenue to consider.

Signal is not secure. Just ditch it. There are too many open and secure messaging/voice protocols that do not use telco (except via bridge services) already. There are even proprietary Big Tech things like Teams™ (use Matrix instead, there is even a bridge).

There are many bridge services from telco to digital federated voice/messaging. I use diamondcard.us for SIP and jmp.chat for XMPP. jmp.chat also does SIP and Matrix.

It would be nice if the reply count separated people you follow from unknown npubs. It is annoying to see replies, anticipate meeting new people online, and click - only to see another spam. Maybe I'm not using the reputation cut off properly. I notice many of the spams have -4, -5 reputation.

I've been using Cjdns. It provides (cryptoauthenticated) IP6, so nostr, email, matrix, bitcoin, etc are accessible just by running a node. It runs on layer 2 or UDP.
Similar projects are yggdrasil and pinecone.

So when using avian carrier (microSD in backpack on carrier pigeon) or other sneaker net, a minimum of a full round trip is required to see updates. (Outgoing trip with pull requests, return trip with results.)
On SSB, you could publish a follow (bad for the evil govt scenario), and get regular updates without a pull request. Similarly on usenet. The tape cartridge would be preloaded with the current subscriptions when the carrier showed up. I wonder if there is a way to anonymously have standing pull requests?
