Altered States(1978)by Paddy Chayefsky who adapted it into the screenplay for the 1980 Ken Russell film starring the great William Hurt. Cover art for the novel is unknown to me.
(The movie influenced the end scene in A-Ha's Take On Me(1984) music video).

In an interview in 2004 Joe Eszterhas spoke on the movie when he described screenwriters behaviour like hookers:
"I think there have been exceptions to the rule, and I think that there have been some really militant, famous exceptions to it, most especially Paddy Chayefsky, who viewed himself as a screenwriter the same way he viewed himself as a playwright. He even had a clause in his contract for Altered States, saying that his words simply couldn't be changed. Of course, what happened there–one of the saddest and darkly funniest stories I know about screenwriters in Hollywood–is that Ken Russell, who directed the film at the height of his fame as an auteur director, was also at the height of his alcoholism.

He began changing the script upside down, at which point Chayefsky and the studio reminded him that he couldn't do that, by contract. At which point Russell, angered, began purposely trying to destroy Paddy's dialogue by having the actors eat while they were delivering it, or having them deliver it in a staccato, machine-gun kind of style, so that you couldn't make out what they were saying. Ultimately, he was able to destroy both Paddy's script and the movie, which was a critical and commercial failure. It was a heartbreaking experience for Chayefsky, who had fought for decades against that, and for protecting his material. It was such a heartbreaking experience that he died shortly afterwards, some say from a broken heart."

Later, he joined the PGP Corporation—one of the first companies to commercialize cryptography—working alongside the legendary Phil Zimmermann.
He was an active member of the Cypherpunks mailing list, exchanging ideas with pioneers like Wei Dai and Nick Szabo.

Hal Finney had been following a new idea circulating on the cypherpunk mailing list: #Bitcoin.
On January 11, 2009, a Sunday, someone named Satoshi posted Bitcoin’s source code on the list.
Hal was the FIRST to reply! In a moment of wild imagination, he suggested that 1 BTC could one day be worth $10 million.

Hal even exchanged emails with Satoshi and helped fix bugs in Bitcoin's code.
On January 12 in Greenwich (January 11 at 7:24 PM in California), Hal received 10 #BTC in a "test" transaction initiated by the creator himself.
This was—and will forever remain—the first transaction in the history of #Bitcoin.

It was August 2009. Hal Finney was diagnosed with ALS.
The longest-living patient with the syndrome was Stephen Hawking, who survived for 55 years.
Most don't make it past 5.
In October, Hal shared his diagnosis online in a post titled "Dying Outside." His unshakable sense of humor stood out 👇
"I am lucky to have good support, caring family, and access to excellent medical care. Still, I find myself sometimes walking in circles, obsessing over what I could have done differently. But hey, life goes on—except for me, apparently!"
Even as his body failed, Hal's mind remained as sharp as ever.

Hal’s vital functions were ceased, and the cryonic procedure was initiated.
He became the 128th patient of Alcor.
Today, his body floats in a tank at -150°C, in the middle of Arizona.

It's not something that plagues my thoughts, or causes me regular distress. It's just something I look back at with regret. No matter what you have, I think it's kinda hard not to feel some sorta way about a decision that cost you $400k. Especially if you didn't grow up with money.
I've never been cavalier with money, and no matter what I have, I don't think I'll ever be one of those people who wastes money for the sake of wasting it. I'll never be someone who lights $100 bills on fire as a way of showing off. Even if I could afford it. The way I grew up, and what I was taught about money in my youth is still with me. And I think that's a good thing.
This isn't a Bitcoin block convo, it's a LN offline payments one.
In nostr, here is always trust. Fairly big. That's the issue. You trust the relay operators. For notes in 99% of all notes, not a big deal.
For real money, larger sums, a mortgage payment, whatever, it could be a massive deal and that trust needs to be minimized.
Having a 3rd party server doesn't really help, they could always shutdown or not pass on the store, etc...
Just spit balling issues here. I have NO idea how to solve the node issue. my main lightning node has zero issues, plenty of liquidity, and requires very minimal maintenance and occasional rebalancing. But I'm pretty even on them anyways, so I don't see it as a big deal.
Perhaps the answer is a few levels. Trustless(minimized) by own node online, trusting a 3rd party server for passing on when online(block stream has this), self controlled hosted LN, and of course fully custodial.
It's silly to think everyone will run a node, as well as that everyone will or should be custodial.

✅ หากการใช้งานนั้นมี Passphrase ผมจะให้คะแนน Physical Attack เพิ่มอีกประมาณ 2 คะแนน เมื่อเปรียบเทียบจากการใช้งานแบบเดียวกันแต่ไม่มี Passphrase (เพราะว่าขโมย HW ไปก็ทำอะไรไม่ได้ ,, ยกเว้น HW บางรุ่นที่สามารถกรอก Passphrase ทิ้งไว้ได้) แต่จะลดคะแนนส่วนของ Human Error ให้น้อยลงแทน!! เพราะว่าเพิ่มโอกาสที่จะลืม Passphrase ได้
✅ หากเลือกใช้วิธีที่มีระบบสำรอง (Redundancy) ผมจะให้คะแนน Human Error เต็มสิบ !! (เพราะว่ามีสำรองนั่นแหละ ,, ถึงลืมก็ไม่เป็นไร .. ยังพอที่จะ Recovery กระเป๋ากลับมาได้)
