This morning an existing client texted me to ask about purchasing the extended warranty for the laptop they’re ready to buy. I don’t sell hardware, but I also don’t charge for this sort of pre-purchase assistance.
I know that I’ll make money setting up the laptop after the purchase. And I know that for the life of the laptop, this client is likely to call me for remote tech support. So I’m happy to take some time over a period of days answering questions about memory, storage, CPU types, brand preferences, and so forth. (I texted the client a list of recommended minimum specs several days ago).
Everything I’ve said above is standard customer care stuff. What I want to emphasize to you with this post is rapid availability. The client texted me at 9:05, and I didn’t see it for about a half hour. Whoops! As soon as I saw it, though, I replied. There’s a possibility that the client is in the store, or has a browser tab open ready to complete the purchase online. They need answers. Part of keeping your clients coming back is the seldom talked about attribute of availability.
(If you’re new to my posts, here’s a little background. I make most of my money every year doing on-site cybersecurity projects for public utilities, custom on-site training for network engineers, and solving specialized problems where the in-house expertise needs a brief boost. But that only happens a few times a year. For instance, my next trip is currently scheduled in August. To fill the time between the big revenue generating gigs, I do tech support for companies that are too small to have a full-time IT staff, and for residential customers. I’m not going to sit around and watch TV all day. I love doing this stuff. It’s fun for me).

Could the data center equivalent of the China Syndrome be caused by a DDoS attack?
1) Example question: “Analyze all of the soil sample reports available to you for the continental United States, and draw conclusions about the arsenic levels in the different regions.”
2) Generate 100 such questions.
3) Create a botnet of 50,000 computers.
4) Instruct all of the computers in the botnet to begin asking the same GPT the 100 questions sequentially at a specific time.
Okay, the reality is that all that would do is make the GPT slow down, if you can inject sufficient quantities of questions requiring significant processing power. The data center won’t melt. No China Syndrome here.
But I’m wondering if state actors or hacktivists are experimenting with LLM DDoS attacks. I’m betting they are.

On March 31 I downloaded the Google Drive desktop app. I downloaded it from what I thought was the legitimate Google source, but I was wrong. It was an imposter site. The app contained a trojan. The amount of effort it takes to clean up this mess is phenomenal. If it was a client computer, I’d say, “It’s not cost effective to have me clean this and rebuild it for you,” which is true. But since it’s my own computer, cost isn’t the issue, and it’s a valuable learning exercise.
My pride says, “Don’t tell anyone. Keep this secret!”
My honor says, “Tell people that some attacks look very realistic.”
Anyone can be fooled.
You are not being paranoid.
You are being justifiably cautious.

One of the families that has a personal cybersecurity contract with me is illustrative of how difficult it can be to get people to change their attitudes and behaviors with respect to security.
BACKGROUND
A financially comfortable family in Seattle has a six-month contract with me to work on their cybersecurity and information security. (The fact that they’re financially comfortable is relevant to the story; more on that below). Some things I’m doing with in-home visits, and some of it is done via remote login sessions while they watch. The service covers everything: Internet gateway hardening, computer, tablet, and smartphone security settings, help with 2FA setup, email evaluation, password management process review and improvement, Wi-Fi security, device encryption, and – the subject of today’s post – backups.
THE SITUATION
The wife has expressed considerable concern with backing up pictures from her phone. I’ve recommended offline backups in addition to online storage. I helped her shop online for external USB drives with sufficient storage capacity. She said she’d buy one, but then she canceled this week’s meeting to set it up. Why? Because she hasn’t gotten around to buying the storage device yet.
This isn’t a matter of not being able to afford it. She didn’t stall me because she’s embarrassed about the cost and she’s waiting until payday. No, it’s simply a comfort with the status quo, and the feeling that “it won’t happen to me.” It can be put off, and nothing bad will happen.
THE LESSON
Don’t put it off. It can happen to you. Do your backups.

My domain and email hosting provider turned on "Boxtrapper" by default on my email addresses. First time anyone tried to email me, they were getting blocked, and received an email from Boxtrapper saying they had to click a link to verify they were legit. I have no idea how long it was like that or how many emails I missed. It may have been as much as a couple of weeks. I found the setting and disabled it tonight.

Why did I call him back? Because when people are looking for a job you don’t leave them hanging, that’s why.
We chatted for a bit. I explained that in the name of my company, “FIFO” is a term from software engineering and OT system programming: FIrst In, First Out.
I asked him what he does on the oil rigs. What kind of maintenance? It turns out he does a little bit of everything, from IT support to underwater welding. That raised my eyebrows!
Sorry, Chris, I don’t have a job for you, and I don’t even know who to recommend you to. But I know how tough it is when you’re looking for work, and I know how important it is to get a call back, how much it means just to know what the answer is from any given prospect. I looked up the Wikipedia article on Base64 and found this: "OpenPGP, described in RFC 9580, specifies "ASCII armor", which is identical to the "Base64" encoding described by MIME, with the addition of an optional 24-bit CRC. The checksum is calculated on the input data before encoding; the checksum is then encoded with the same Base64 algorithm and, prefixed by the "=" symbol as the separator, appended to the encoded output data." That makes me wonder if they're using LI to pass encrypted messages in a public forum. Or maybe they just think they're 1337.

I saw a post on LinkedIn that made fun of mouse pads as something no one uses anymore. There were lots of affirmative comments, mocking mouse pads. The only thing I can figure is that some people have never had nice furniture, or they like the built-in touchpads on their laptops.
I did some checking online and found several market forecast articles that all agree - mouse pad sales are on the rise, and the trend is projected to continue for the next several years.

I’ve done OSINT (Open Source INTelligence) before in an effort to find Joey. I tried again this week using some newer methods, and for the first time I was able to find him. He lives in Anchorage, Alaska now. His home is valued at over $400K. His mom and dad, both great people that I enjoyed being around, died in their 80s after being married more than 50 years. When I last saw Joey, he was the third of four children, but not long after my family moved away from East Syracuse his mom had another baby, a little sister. I’m not going to try to contact him. The memories are enough.

There is still a good reason to get paper transaction receipts for in-store purchases when doing any sort of electronic transaction: tap-to-pay, chip, whatever. This weekend at a national retailer I bought a phone case for my new phone. In my car in the parking lot I tried to put it on the phone, and realized I’d bought the wrong case. That’s my mistake, not the store’s fault. Then I walked back inside to exchange it for the correct case, and that’s where the fun began.
When the clerk asked me if I wanted a paper receipt or email, I said, “Email is fine.” But the email address I use for that store is one that I hadn’t set up on the new phone yet, so I had no receipt.
The clerk used my name to look up the account, but there was no record of the purchase. Next he tried using my credit card to bring up the account. Still no record.
He wrinkled his face while scrutinizing the screen and asked, “Did you use this card to make a $340 purchase yesterday in California? Because that’s the most recent transaction I see.”
I get almost instantaneous bank alerts on transactions. I knew that there was no way my card had actually been used for a purchase in California. Either this major retailer had a badly messed up database, or the employee was repeatedly pulling up the same wrong account.
I asked him if he could have a manager come over to sort it out. That involved a wait of several minutes, but eventually they found the transaction record and I was able to make the exchange for the correct item.
There are many unrelated factors at play in this example: lack of access to the email receipt, an inexperienced store employee, my own inattention when picking the part off the display rack… but simply saying “Yes” when I was asked if I wanted a paper receipt would’ve made the process go a lot smoother.

I went to the local Dept of Licensing office to renew my drivers license, which expires this year. Previously I had upgraded my license to a “Real ID,” so I can use it for ID on domestic air flights. This required presenting proof of citizenship. No problem. I presented my birth certificate and passport. The deadline for obtaining a Real ID for domestic air travel is fast approaching. It’s May 7, 2025. After this date, travelers will need a Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card, or another acceptable form of identification, to board domestic flights. For this reason, at the DOL office, the clerks are asking everyone if they want to upgrade their license to Real ID, and if so, then asking for proof of citizenship. I’d already done it. This was just a renewal. No problem. But…
In the line ahead of me was a woman of Asian ethnicity who apparently had a regular drivers license. The clerk asked her if she wanted to upgrade to a Real ID, explained why, and the woman said yes.
Then the clerk asked, “Are you a US citizen?”
I saw the look on the woman’s face. It happened so fast. It was only there for an instant.
It was a look of fear.
She said emphatically but politely, “Yes.”
The clerk asked if the woman had brought the necessary documents with her to prove her citizenship. The woman said no, she didn’t know she needed them, and she’d come back later.
American citizens who are born here, but don’t look like they’re of European descent, are now afraid of their own government.

Here’s some context for my post about not starting a reply with, “No offense, but…”
On LinkedIn this morning I was reading through some posts, and one post had a comment that started with that phrase. And, of course, there was a reason. The comment was likely to be interpreted by the OP as offensive.
That’s the point.
When someone starts a reply with the “no offense” disclaimer, they already KNOW that the reply is likely to be perceived as insulting in some way.
And they don’t care. They do it anyway.
If you really don’t want to cause offense, stop, think, and organize your thoughts and words. Whatever you were about to say – whatever point you wanted to make – can probably be made without causing offense. Don’t be lazy. Think it through, and re-compose your reply.
Unless, of course, you really are a jerk, and simply MUST make an offensive comment.
But I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt, and that’s why I’m giving you a recommendation about a better way of writing. If you really don’t want to offend, and if your point really is valid, there’s a way to write what you want to say that is more likely to be received well by the one you’re writing to.
Now, let’s go to the other side of the coin.
There are times when it’s okay, even imperative, to offend.
Call out racism. Call out privilege. Call out improper behavior. Call out false reporting. If you offend, so what? Here is a truism for citizens of the Fediverse, citizens of nations, and citizens of the planet:
Good citizenship offends bad citizens.

Since my first Windows computer in the 1990s, I’ve been saving my Internet bookmarks and transferring them to each new computer. Today I imported them into a new browser and – what? – I have 6,808 bookmarks. I use maybe twenty sites on a regular basis, but I have folders for every category you can think of: science, reference, math, shopping, financial, travel, and so on. I would’ve guessed there might be a couple hundred bookmarks in there. I bet more than half of those are dead links now.

Here’s one little vignette that helps explain why Wireless Advocates suddenly shuttered its operation in 2022. (Background: until then, they were the retailer that managed all cell phone sales in all Costco stores. Same thing for all military base exchanges).
I was brought in from outside in a joint role as CISO and Director of Infrastructure in January 2020. As Director of Infrastructure, I also had oversight of the Help Desk, providing support to our sales staff in the retail locations.
Recall that this is right before COVID. None of us knew what was about to happen.
I reported to the CIO/VP of IT. We’ll call her Lorna.
During my first week, Lorna took me to the Sales Dept and introduced me to the VP of Sales. Let’s call him Mark.
As Lorna put it, “Mark has something he wants to run by you.”
In the Sales Dept they had a complete, full-size mockup of a Costco in-store kiosk. They used it to determine layout, shelf space, displays, etc., and then sent the plan-o-grams out to the store locations when there was a change. There were two point-of-sale terminals at each kiosk, located on diagonal corners from each other. These POS terminals were just Windows PCs running emulators, with a credit card reader attached. The monitor was just above a horizontal shelf that ran all the way around the kiosk. The keyboard and mouse were on the shelf. All of the remaining shelf space was used to display phones and advertising placards.
Mark showed me all of this and then got around to his point. “I’d like you to replace the full-size keyboards with mini-keyboards. I can get two more advertising cards on the counter when you do this.” Mark explained that we received ad revenue from the carriers for every ad placard. I was speechless for a moment. This was so ridiculously stupid I couldn’t believe anyone was serious.

No revenue meant no spending, so Mark had no funds for the Great Mini-Keyboard Project. No one asked me about it again.
Here's what I wanted to say to Mark, right in front of Lorna, at that first meeting. “So Mark. I’ve never met you before today, but I know quite a bit about you. I know that you suck at your job. I know that sales are abysmal, and the CEO is blaming you. I know that you’ve tried everything you can think of to boost sales, but you’re just not able to do it. So, out of sheer desperation and lack of reasonable ideas to actually sell phones, you’re frantically trying to gain a little more revenue from advertising. But, Mark, you weren’t hired to sell advertising. You were hired to sell phones.”
In my imagination, I continued. “Mark, I’ve got sales reps in the kiosks right now complaining about the existing keyboards. They want bigger, ergonomic keyboards – you know, those keyboards with rolling hills and valleys and a big space between half the letters and numbers.” (Of course, I hadn’t talked to anyone in the stores yet, but I can tell you from long experience that if you have several hundred employees, some of them want ergonomic keyboards).

I skated through COVID working from my home office, mostly as a network architect for California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS).
Then, in December 2022, I saw an amazing news item: Wireless Advocates had ceased operations, overnight. Even Costco didn’t seem to know in advance, though I have to wonder about that.
So Wireless Advocates never recovered from COVID. Their VP of Sales never figured out how to do his job. Their CIO never solved the problems with technical debt. They were apparently freakishly lucky with no cybersecurity breaches, because that network was riddled with vulnerabilities.
My takeaway from that experience is that when a company is dysfunctional, it’s dysfunctional through and through. It isn’t just one dysfunctional department. It’s systemic rot, affecting the entire tree, from roots to leaves.

The Salesperson’s Challenge: Identifying Valid Prospects
(Full disclosure: I write from the perspective of the buyer, not the salesperson, but that’s valuable information. If you’re the salesperson, you need to understand how the buyer thinks).
BACKGROUND
Yesterday I was talking to a young Territory Manager about cybersecurity products. He’s a fantastic guy, not entirely new to sales, but still, he’s in the early stages of his sales career. He’s going to be very successful in sales if that’s where he decides to stay. He has the integrity, diligence, care for his clients, and attention to detail that will ensure his success.
Anyway, back to the post, which is about qualifying your prospects.
We were talking about how to identify qualified leads, so you don’t waste your time pitching to people who will never buy, even if they love your product and service offerings.
He told me that the company he works for had identified their target customer as companies with annual revenue in a certain range. He also told me the annual cost of one of their main service offerings.
I said, “The customers at the lower end of your target revenue range are going to have a tough time deciding to say yes, because your product comes out to a little more than one percent of their annual revenue.”
He was mildly surprised. “Is one percent too much?”
Yes, it is. A lot of small to mid-size businesses have annual profits in the single digit range. Taking on a new expense that eats up an entire percentage point is a big deal.
THE SOLUTION
It’s probably not realistic to reduce the price of your product. So the solution is to target companies with higher annual revenue. If you’re going to close, say, 5% of your pitches, then you can’t waste valuable time pitching to people who don’t believe they can afford what you’re offering.
The upper management of the company this Territory Manager works for should adjust upward the minimum annual revenue for their targeted leads. That way, his Account Reps won’t be discouraged by pursuing prospects that walk away as soon as the conversation turns to price.

A 79 year-old man on the East Coast surprised me this weekend. He called me to work remotely on his Windows 7 computer. I think I talked him into upgrading to a new computer with Windows 11. He asked me for recommendations. I gave him the minimum specs I recommend and taught him how to read the specs in the ads at Best Buy. He said he knows a local computer shop, and he thinks he’ll just go in there with the list of specs I gave him and ask them to put one together.
That was the part that shocked me.
He’s in a state on the Atlantic Coast. He knows a local computer shop. Yet he calls me, in Washington State, for tech support.

Do you make presentations with PowerPoint slides? Here are some pointers for communicating seamlessly. I’ll start with a story.
The Washington State IT Industry Forum sent me a post-conference feedback form. In the section for “Any Other Comments?” I wrote this:
“The PowerPoint slides used for the Keynote and the Fireside Chat needed to be prepared with a much larger font. The Marcus Pavilion is too big a space to use that small a font. The words on the slides occupied maybe 10% of the surface area. People don’t attend to see the pretty slide background – they want to see the words. Use the space on the slide to communicate, not decorate.”
Maybe you could use this advice, too. The information on the slide is more important than the appearance of the slide.
Big letters. High contrast colors.
Another thing to remember: you can’t project black. If your presentation is going to be in a room with all the lights on, the color of the screen you see when you first walk in the room, before the projector is turned on, is as black as it gets. During your presentation, the white screen only looks like it has black areas because the projected white light is so much brighter than the screen. The audience perceives black as an optical illusion, a trick of the mind. Therefore, if you make a slide with white letters on a black background, it will be harder to read than a slide that has black letters on a white background.
And don’t use black on red or red on black. People can only see that combination clearly in a small, darkened conference room where everyone is seated around the same table. In a large auditorium or conference hall, the attendees won’t be able to read it at all.

The Law of Unintended Consequences – I just had an interesting little learning exercise with Outlook in Office 365...
A remote support client contacted me because he lost the "From" column in his Inbox. My solution was to select one of his other folders, then go to “Change View,” then “Apply Current View to Other Mail Folders.”
Everything seemed great. Added bonus: all of his many sub-folders now showed the same view. I ended the remote connection to his computer and we hung up the phone. But a while later he called me back.
Why? Because in the “Sent Items” view, it normally shows the “To” column, but my global change made Sent Items show the “From” column instead. It just showed his own name, all the way down the list of emails!
So I did a more granular configuration on the Sent Items folder. I went to “View Settings,” then “Columns.” I added the “To” field and removed the “From” field, for just that one folder.
We’ll see if he calls me back again, but I think it’s going to be okay now.

The choice between In-house SOC and Managed SOC doesn’t start with cost. You start with an analysis of EFFECTIVENESS and SUITABILITY for your organization’s security needs. IF and ONLY IF both options are effective and suitable for your organization, THEN you can compare cost.
Usually – and I mean 99 times out of 100 – only one option is both effective and suitable for your organization.
Example 1: A small company doesn’t have enough security incidents to maintain a full-time in-house staff. An in-house SOC isn’t suitable. In this situation, if any SOC at all is suitable, you’re comparing prices of competing managed SOCs, you’re not comparing in-house versus managed SOCs.
Example 2: A large company has enough incidents to maintain a full-time in-house SOC. The in-house SOC will provide better response times, more control, greater knowledge of the network and users, better communication with the IT staff, better communication with the CISO, better project coordination, and – I promise – better security, because of all of the things I just mentioned.
The managed SOC has to pay their people, pay for their infrastructure, AND make a profit. There is no way the managed SOC can provide the same level of service without charging you more than it would cost you to do it yourself.

How do you make a cybersecurity presentation about government requirements be interesting? In this photo, you see me casting a spell on the attendees to keep their eyes open. ;-)
The secret to making an interesting presentation is to start by advertising it accurately. That way, the only people who bother to show up are people who are already interested in the topic. That’s half the battle right there – getting the right audience.
The next step is to provide useful information and actionable steps in a way that’s easy to understand and helps the listeners feel like they can successfully do the things that need to be done.
Assemble motivated attendees. Then, tell them:
What they need to know.
What to do.
How to do it.

Yes, there are some cybercriminals with skillz. But the reality is, most cybercrime is as subtle as a hammer.
The cybersecurity expert creates a sophisticated work of art, with encrypted storage, an access control list, and MFA.
The cybercriminal sends a phishing email, and the victim swings the hammer for them.
Spend the money to segment your network.
Decentralize as much as you can.
Take non-essential data offline.
Stop thinking all data is equally essential to daily operations.
Stop making everything Internet accessible.
Eschew the cloud for anything other than sales and marketing.

<Insert curse words here> I made a mistake. A person emailed me today to ask for a half hour of my time to discuss a problem they were having with a federal grant project. In other words, they're making money off of the project, and they needed my help. They said it was urgent. Included lots of details. So important we could discuss it after hours. We set up a time this evening and did the Teams meeting.
My mistake: I didn't discuss rates in advance. He thought it was free, just a conversation between friends.
I told him never mind, I won't invoice it.
IT'S A FEDERAL GRANT PROJECT. HE'S MAKING MONEY. HE ASKED ME FOR HELP. And he expected me to give him my knowledge and advice for free.
It's my mistake, because I didn't make it clear earlier today when we were scheduling that this is a legitimate billable use of my time.
It's his mistake, because that "friendship" is over. Business only from now on.

Your cloud storage will face fewer attacks if its IP address is unrelated to your domain IP address. They shouldn’t be in the same range.
It’s not a perfect solution, but statistically it does reduce the number of targeted attacks.
Try it, and check your logs.

Be cautious about purchasing online from Facebook Marketplace. I recommend that you only purchase from people you know.
As an example, right now JoAnn is in the news. They're going out of business and closing all stores. Cybercriminals are cashing in on this by creating fake ads, pretending to be JoAnn, with "closeout sales" in the Facebook Marketplace. When you click or tap on the ad, it takes you to a very realistic website - but it's NOT joann(dot)com.
If the Facebook Marketplace ad is for a friend or relative, great! But if the ad is for a famous company, skip the ad and go straight to the company's website to do your shopping.

A couple of times recently I’ve talked to people who expressed their perception that USB drives are past their pull date – like it’s old technology that no one needs or uses anymore. And I am once again concerned for the future of humanity.
Military-grade problem: if everything is expected to be Internet-connected in order to work, it’s easier than most people realize to bring an entire nation to its knees.
Cybersecurity problem: if all information is transferred and stored exclusively on Internet-connected systems, all information has a global attack surface.
Reliability problem: if you need to access the information in a location with spotty wireless Internet coverage, you’re cut off from the information you need.
Privacy problem: if everything is Internet-connected, you’re placing implicit trust in the ISP owner, the Wi-Fi system owner, and the cloud services owner, to respect your privacy, your personhood, your autonomy, your dignity – and your right to disconnect.

Some people on this instance love LinkedIn, some don’t. And, BTW, I don’t care whether you like it or not. I’m not here to change your mind. You do you.
I like it because I get new business from the site, so I’m active, posting about five times a week. When you get to a certain tipping point, for whatever reason you become “popular,” and you start getting a lot of connection requests. I’m somewhere in a middle area, where I get a few requests almost every day, but I can still take the time to look at each profile and make an individual decision.
I reject half or more of the connection requests I receive, because I’m not interested in a big follower account; I’m interested in building relationships with people in my fields, and with potential clients.
I have a short standard list of things I look for first, that are automatic rejection items. I won’t list them all here; proprietary formula and all that. But I will tell you about one automatic rejection item:
Mention business development in your profile.
Every time I’ve accepted a connection request from someone in business development, it’s followed by a sales pitch. Period. That’s the only reason they connected. The thing is, I’m a sole proprietor, and I am just not that interesting to them. They want big clients with thousands of dollars to spend on enterprise-grade software.
So I don’t feel bad about rejecting them. Fact is, if they’d bother to do any research at all, they’d reject me, and wouldn’t even send me a connection request.
The irony here is that I’m on LinkedIn for ... business development.
But I never mention the phrase. I just post useful information. People read it and say, “This guy knows his sh*t.” Later, if they have a need that corresponds to the subjects I post about, they say, “I’ll check with Bob.”
My sales advice to you is, don’t try to pull in unwilling customers. Be there, be helpful, and let the customers come to you.

I ask because I've had people ask me about getting spam emails saying that they’re compromised due to visiting a website, even if they have an antivirus product or Internet security suite installed. It sounds like a standard social engineering/ransomware scam...but with all the zero-day exploits in the news, it makes one wonder.”
MY ANSWER
That’s a great question, thanks for asking! First, I know from your technical background that you understand these things, but I’m going to start with a vocabulary section for the sake of others who might read this. Then I’ll get to the answer.
Zero-day vulnerability – This is a vulnerability that has just been discovered. The cybercriminal may publish information about the vulnerability to other criminals, but the software manufacturer has had no time to write corrected code.
Exploit – An exploit is when a cybercriminal takes action on a vulnerability. Vulnerabilities can exist without being exploited. This is more common than you might think, because some vulnerabilities depend on a complex set of pre-existing conditions that aren’t easy for the cybercriminal to reproduce.
Zero-day exploit – A zero-day exploit is an action against a zero-day vulnerability.
Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEVs) – The Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog is maintained and published by CISA. I’m not going to put the link here. You can find it with any search engine.
Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) – The CVE List contains all known vulnerabilities (strictly speaking, but we’ll ignore the exceptions). This list is longer than the KEV Catalog. The definitive CVE List is at cve(dot)org.
Now that the vocabulary lesson is out of the way, we’ll get to the answer you were asking for.
1) Zero-day vulnerabilities do exist. Some zero-day exploits can be stopped by antimalware solutions, if the exploit is behavior-based, pattern-based, or otherwise recognizable. But, most of the time, zero-day exploits slide right through the defenses.
2) The spammer does not – indeed, cannot – know if your computer has been compromised. The only person who knows is the actual cybercriminal who ran the exploit.
3) The cybercriminal who ran the exploit usually doesn’t want you to know your machine has been compromised. They won’t send you an email!
4) In the case of ransomware, the cybercriminal’s message usually (always?) appears on screen. It’s not an email.
5) Summary: Yes, your computer can be infected without your antimalware product detecting it. But the cybercriminal is unlikely to email you. The email “informing” you of malware is almost certainly a social engineering attack, unrelated to anything.

That raises a different problem. I wrote an article about it several years ago. This is about online banking, not online purchasing.
TL;DR: If you don't create your online bank account, a cybercriminal can create the online connection to your account with their email address. The bank will notify you by snail mail, but by then the cybercriminal will have drained the money from your account.
