I live thousands of miles away from my family and my friends. I don't fly any more so I very rarely see them.
So I am almost obliged to show up every couple of weeks to see people's life events. Many of my friends are getting quite old, quite a few have died...
Every month or two I post Mastodon and Signal links on Facebook, and try to convince people to join. It hasn't happened.

You can't be sure.
We should be looking for a good, practical approximation here, not a perfect answer, which we won't get.
Wall clock time for a computation is a pretty good surrogate for how much energy is consumed, one that's easy to measure and also interesting even to non-technical people.

Governments need first to actually admit the magnitude of the problems. This isn't some tiny issue - this is something which will destroy most of humanity if left unchecked.
They need to strongly explain to their citizens that for their grandchildren to have a livable world, we today will have to make serious sacrifices.
They need to actively forbid many, many activities. They need to embrace #degrowth, and explain that yes, it will tank the markets.

We happen to know that this is Satoshi's wallet ID only because this is the very first wallet ID ever created.
Many, many Bitcoin wallets don't have any sort of identification associated with them and are not on any exchange.
And there are plenty of other cryptocurrencies designed for privacy and obscurity, like Monero.

BIPOC is a very specific term meaning "black and indigenous people of color". It's basically only used in the US, and it's used to distinguish people who either were already living in the US,or brought there by force, from voluntary immigrants to the United States.

In 2016, almost everyone expected that Hillary Clinton would win, and instead Trump won. Luckily, he didn't have it together to take advantage of it.
Now if Trump wins, terrible things will happen, because they have an organization and a plan.

I don't even remember when I first heard about it, it's part of my groundwork.
Important to remember that Therac-25 was not caused by gratuitous incompetence. The company that wrote the software did a great deal of testing and reviewed the code.
Unfortunately, it was early days and the concept of a race condition wasn't well-known, and the bug didn't surface until people got so familiar with the UI that they went through it very fast and hit that race condition.

If it were just a "stumble" no one would be calling for the replacement of the incumbent.
We're on the same side here! I just feel terribly frustrated because I saw this coming in 2020, I was against Biden or Saunders (who I adore!) for that reason, and felt at least that they should appoint a VP who was a viable candidate on their own.
I feel that when the story of this is written, we'll find out that aides knew there was a problem sometime in 2023.

For me, it was the debates. I couldn't even watch the whole thing, it was so stressful. Biden couldn't even hit the talking points on abortion, the issue that keeps giving for over fifty years. (It's hard not to suspect that the reason that since 1973 the Democrats always promise to codify Roe and never do it is because it's such a good campaign issue.)
It is imperative that Trump be defeated. It's the last hope for our ecosystem and a thousand other reasons.

First, that's absolutely not so. They didn't actually force any specific thing to happen.
Second, nothing is being done about climate change, and our civilization will die if we don't.
I would wish that I could teleport that fucking judge 100 years into the future so he can see for himself the consequences of his depraved actions.

Where do you get this weird impression of Biden?!
We have decades of his center-right voting stance.
He supported Vietnam and every war since. He opposed bussing and was a good friend to segregationists. Don't forget how he crushed Anita Hill, giving us Clarence Thomas.

We all knew this was a possibility and yet the DNC didn't plan for it.
They put in place a VP who everyone appears to believe is unelectable (me, I'm not so sure) and yet didn't make any attempt to groom other candidates.
Biden's team strongly implied on multiple occasions in 2020 that he'd step down after one term, and then once he was elected, walked it back.
The DNC as an institution is completely moribund, and needs a complete shakeup from top to bottom.

Remember, they completely screwed up in 2016, and there was no attempt at a post-mortem or any sort of change.
Given that Obama is apparently in on this too, the least hypothesis is that Biden is, in fact, simply not very functional.
