I think GNOME would feel pretty natural to anyone on a laptop coming from macOS but that's about it. :blobfox3c: I totally agree, it's not inherently intuitive whatsoever. I really like the minimalist design choices though so I can't figure out a better way to onboard people that wouldn't just ruin the experience. It's kind of like swiping up to go home on a smartphone. It's not really intuitive on the face of it but it's something people have to learn. On a desktop though, yeah, GNOME is kinda awful to use (unless you're like me with my mouse super key heck YEAH :party_dog: )

I definitely think that's a bigger problem on desktops than laptops though, and most type-C ports on modern laptops should hopefully support USB, 30W or 60W PD charging, DisplayPort and (unfortunately) HDMI. It definitely gets a lot more complicated on a desktop where the I/O isn't as limited and not everything can be USB 4 and basically nothing can put out a video signal when there's a discrete GPU involved. That said, I think nowadays most people who use a desktop are probably either enthusiasts or have some other IT help with the setup. Most average end users aren't going out and buying a desktop anymore. :blobfoxmeltsob:

People always perceive there to be more crime than there actually is. :huskyeyeroll: It's something I noticed a lot in Chicago when people would discuss "dangerous neighborhoods" and I'd reply with the actual crime statistics.
People in lower income neighborhoods tend to be a lot nicer and a lot more sociable, while higher income neighborhoods tend to be more shut in and adversarial. Gimme a bunch of neighbors that hang out on their stoop any day.

The wonderful, liberal idea of freedom of speech is coming up hard against the realities of what unlimited speech does to a population when faced with centralized social media. We can stop copyright infringement all day long, but stopping disinformation, harassment, hate speech, and cult-like political brainwashing is something we as a society are not allowed to touch. I'm very much not the biggest fan of Firefox shoving AI chatbot access into the browser, but the best thing about Firefox is you can at least disable what you don't like. :meowshrug: Or, if you don't like Firefox adding crap that you have to opt-out of, you can use a downstream Firefox fork like Waterfox, LibreWolf, etc. I'm still going to recommend a Firefox-based browser over a Chromium-based browser any day because I think Google having de facto control over web standards is way more dangerous than any stupid crap Mozilla can shove in there.

Telegram is going to start moderating private chats. Which, like, I dunno, isn't great? Not that I don't think they shouldn't be removing illegal content, but based on how Patreon and other tech firms moderate babyfur content you'll excuse me if I don't welcome moderation into one-on-one chats :blobfoxcofeglare:
It says a lot that they'd rather put the resources into moderating their 950 million users than roll out proper end-to-end encryption for all of their chats to wash their hands of it. Make no mistake, they'd rather track your messages than actually give a private and secure messenger. There's no way Telegram isn't doing data collection on all of your messages, since there's no other explanation other than there being a profit motive on your data. :meowshrug:

Yeah I hope not though. One thing I always bang on about with Mastodon is that it actually adds features to the Twitter experience instead of it just being, "Twitter: but FOSS and federated." A lot of FOSS projects just replicate what's there while doing everything worse and I'm so tired of it. :blobcatmlem:

My slow crawl away from Matrix and its various bridges back to just using Telegram and Google Messages continues and I'm not happy about it :blobcorgi_pout: I would rather have an end-to-end encrypted messenger instead of Telegram, and it's still my dream to have all my messengers in one place, but Matrix just isn't there yet and I'm not sure it's ever gonna be. The protocol is a mess where it's bloated in some areas and completely undercooked in others, the apps are all terrible, and Synapse is a complete pain in the ass to work with.
I'd use Signal without the Matrix bridge but A) it's super barebones with a pretty piss-poor app experience in its own right, especially on desktop, B) it's centralized and prone to the same enshittification as everything else, and C) no one else uses it.
I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with my server yet. I spent a lot of time setting it up so I'm not ready to just yank it down yet. :drgn_sigh:
