Something that's been on my mind for a little while:
Women who pursue interests, occupations, and roles that some consider masculine are often accused by detractors of "wanting to be men."
This is a straw man. All most of these women really want is to not be held back from being themselves. And if women are interested in and capable of doing masculine things, how exclusively masculine are those things, really? (And why does it matter?)
People who are prescriptive with gendered behavior often claim that their way is natural. If it's so natural, why are they so triggered when people ignore it?
They punish authenticity in the name of authenticity, which is just wild to me.

Nostr is a small frontier town.
There are always the kinds of folks who want to live in a small frontier town. They come because they are tired of being controlled and want freedom; because they get ostracized from mainstream society; because they want to be part of building and founding something; because they are small or medium fish and a smaller pond is better than a bigger one for them; because they prefer knowing their neighbors and relaxed, small town vibes; because they know that frontiers tend to attract their kind of people; or because they see some potential in that town and know that if they stick with it, they and the town will prosper together.
There are always the kinds of folks who don’t want to live in a small frontier town. When they visit, they dislike that there’s nothing exciting to do, the pace of life is too slow with too little action, few people live here, few who live here share their background or interests, wild or offensive people live here, there’s not enough regulation, the infrastructure isn’t well developed, they don’t know how to (or don’t want to) make their own fun.
Some small frontier towns become ghost towns, but others, which are situated strategically, get the chance to grow. Towns on river mouths grow; towns on crossroads and train tracks grow; towns with thriving industries grow. More and different people live there now. There’s more to do, more being said. The town gets a glow-up and the finer things of life flow in. And then, sometimes, some of the city folk are a little more happy to stay.
I believe Nostr is “situated strategically” because of its unique properties, like a frontier town on a river mouth. There’s no need to fret about whether Nostr will grow or become what you hope it will be; just give it time and do your best to leave your mark. There’s no need to dis the “city folk” who don’t want to stay; many of their complaints are perfectly valid; just give it time, and as long as what they’re looking for is possible within Nostr’s basic structure and values, they might just take up residence when things get a little more developed. It doesn’t actually make you any better than them that you stay and they go, though it does show that you are more rugged, or at least better adapted to our particular frontier conditions.
Stay patient and present and I know I’ll be seeing more of you, neighbor!

CFA unsweet tea is delicious though 🧡 I never get sweet tea anywhere, so I can tell you their unsweet stands out as one of the best around. I know of only one restaurant with a comparably good iced unsweet black tea, and it’s a local BBQ place in northern Virginia, not a chain.

I confess to sometimes using a lot of hashtags — all I’m trying to do is anticipate what my intended audience might be searching global for. If the majority of clients had good keyword search instead, I might stop using hashtags at all. As it is, I’m just aware that’s how Nostr search works.

#pasta closeup. Behold the creaminess!
I haven’t done exactly this thing before, but it hit the spot.
Sautéed a yellow bell pepper, then melted some cream cheese in homemade broth. Added cream and marinated gigante beans, which come with their own little pieces of red and green bell peppers. Simmered until very thick and creamy. Added a small amount of tomato paste (not making a tomato sauce, per se, just enough for a hint of tomato), a small amount of garlic sautéed in butter until just fragrant, and a splash of whey. Served with pasta next to some spicy baked chicken.

Hebrews 5:12-14 indicates that the author believed mature Christians would be teachers: “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the actual words of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unacquainted with the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to distinguish between good and evil.”
Proverbs 27:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Examples set in the Psalms to speak in the assembly or congregation:
Psalm 111:1: “Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart, in the company of the upright and in the assembly.”
Psalm 68:11: “The Lord gives the command; The women who proclaim good news are a great army:” and :26 “Bless God in the congregations, Even the Lord, you who are of the fountain of Israel.”
Psalm 40:9-10: “I have proclaimed good news of righteousness in the great congregation; Behold, I will not restrain my lips, Lord, You know. I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your mercy and Your truth from the great congregation.”
Psalm 35:18: “I will give You thanks in the great congregation; I will praise You among a mighty people.”
Psalm 26:12: “My foot stands on level ground; In the congregations I will bless the Lord.”
Psalm 22:22: “I will proclaim Your name to my brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will praise You.”
Psalm 22:25: “From You comes my praise in the great assembly … ”
and to teach: one example is Psalm 71, with many instances.
Not hiding the light of the world: Matthew 5:14 “‘You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
Being a royal priest and proclaiming God’s excellence: 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light”
Use of spiritual gifts, which include teaching and prophecy:
Acts 2:17-18, quoting Joel 2:28-29:
“‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,
‘That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind;
And your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
And your young men will see visions,
And your old men will have dreams;
And even on My male and female servants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days,
And they will prophesy.”
1 Corinthians 14: Ironically, one passage used to keep women silent in church is actually full of instruction on how they are supposed to speak in church; for example:
“Therefore if the whole church gathers together and all the people speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are insane? But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all; the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you.”
Note “the WHOLE church” and “ALL!”
Note that in translations which recognize how ancient Greek collective pronouns work and make it clear to modern English readers, this whole chapter is full of “brothers AND sisters” speaking in church!
The same command to “keep silent” is used in this chapter for those who speak in tongues and those who prophesy as well as women, but it’s NOT a universal silence – it’s a temporary one meant to enforce speaking in turns instead of everyone speaking at once and causing confusion and disorder. When Paul mentions women’s silence, he specifically states “If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home” – women who had not been educated in religious matters were asking questions during the assembly, which was causing disorder. Rather than just accepting the women's lesser knowledge, Paul is encouraging their education – lifting them up so they were able to stand beside the men. That teaching is not in vain, but for the edification of the Church.

What created order do you believe in here?
I think that when you come across a verse, it’s useful to think about what it can’t mean as you figure out what it does mean.
That Paul, and more importantly, God himself, commended women who taught and were leaders cancels out the interpretation that women cannot teach and lead.
You can study some of the women I named.

Excellent point I have been planning to post on and invite discussion on sometime soon.
I definitely think that it is precisely that church service roles have often become exactly what they should not be that make this debate so pointed.
Just like as governments grow in power over people, politics become more brutal and ugly, I think that the assumed dominant and hierarchalist view of church service roles (and marriage relationships) leads to much fear of some group or other being “in power” and ruling the other.
Humans were not created to be rule each other, but to rule Creation together.

Yesterday, our church body finally voted on issues that have been on the table for well over a year:
1. Whether to remain affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, and
2. Whether to continue donating funds to them.
Here is the text of the speech I prepared to present my view before the votes. All members were invited to speak for three minutes.

In Western culture, virgin brides wear white dresses. It’s tradition! Our mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers knew this.
But this tradition actually dates back only to the Victorian era. It is, in reality, neither required nor ancient.
On the place of Christian women, I’m happy to talk with anyone about my belief that a true return to tradition — more importantly by far, a return to God’s vision for creation — is not a return to gender roles and hierarchies, but a return to a more ancient equality.
That the same Holy Spirit is poured out on men and women is proof enough in my eyes. But that among the praiseworthy teachers and leaders in the Bible we can find Priscilla, Phoebe, Deborah, and many more, makes the case even more clear, as does a view of countless threads and trends within scripture and the words and actions of Jesus.
Reading the same Bible, some come away convinced like I am, while others come away with the opposite view, or something in between. Baptists have a tradition of plurality, and so not surprisingly, both views are found here at this very church.
Many voices I heard while we were discussing this issue were concerned that if we allowed flexibility on the tradition of women being barred from pastorhood, it would begin a “slippery slope,” and next, we would be allowing actively homosexual pastors.
This is a false equivalency. As excellent as an actively homosexual pastor’s preaching may be, they are still living part of their life in unrepentant sin.
It is not a sin to simply BE a woman. It is not a sin to preach the word of God and shepherd a church body. I further maintain it’s not a sin to do both, or to listen to her when she does.
Breaking the admirable Baptist tradition of plurality, the SBC leadership recently tried to force their perspective on what had long been a matter left up to individual Baptist churches to decide, cracking down on the leadership of women while PROTECTING the leadership of sexual abusers, covering up their crimes and keeping them in contact with past and potential future victims, including children.
Nearly 300 abusers. More than 700 victims. Nearly 20 years of complicity.
Such twisted priorities and actions absolutely do not reflect my values, and I know they do not reflect yours. I believe we should sever ties with the SBC as soon and completely as possible.

So, what happened?
1. Nearly 2/3 of the members who participated voted to leave the SBC. Unfortunately, a 3/4 result was required for the motion to pass.
Some of those who spoke in favor of staying gave as their reason that if we did not stay and fight, the political takeover of the SBC (which extends far beyond the issue of women in ministry) will proceed unhindered. Our pastor encouraged them to reflect, then, on what they will do to fight; I hope they listen to his words.
2. A strong majority voted to stop funding the SBC and this was enough for that motion to pass.
