No it is not a hard problem, the key rotation problem is simply impossible to solve without reinventing Bitcoin, and the user on boarding problem is trivial solved by web fingers.
They just decided to pretend to be doing something they either knew impossible to do, or worse.
The user adoption wouldn't have been affected if they just gave users usernames ... unless you mean the smoke and mirror of decentralised identity helped adoption, but I suspect no body really gives a shot about that.

For anyone who cares, the reason I a argue for a sovereign e2ee filesystem, is because that is the only thing we can make interoperable between apps... just like POSIX and files in general are the only interoperability success story in history.
What I consider feasible is taking that and make it Web native without getting locked in platforms like Google Drive.
Once that is in place, let the best app developer win, and if one file format becomes very useful, we reverse engineer it like we always do, like interoperability always worked; forcefully.

Being able to embed stuff has nothing to do with interoperability or lexicons it just means open APIs for extensions/widgets.
Unix apps can be piped together with a common stdin/stdout interfaces... but they don't have to publish specs on how do they behave.

I am idealistic too, but I don't pretend that idealistic is a business plan, I get a job and build what I want to see in the world on my own dime if I have to.
But my point stands, and confirmed, interoperability;
1. Only matters to idealists, not businesses nor most users.
2. It is incredibly hard and don't scale, because it is too social, it is much simpler to iterate a product vs protocols.
My point here is we have a very very limited budget for interoperable protocols, and it can only be spent effectively on stuff like udp/tcp/http and the last one stretches that.
Everything more complex is a lost cause in my opinion, so all the fuss on Lexicons is really overrated.
Finally I want to point out that if you make a "X lexicon" your sense of mission can still be fulfilled if users have to download your app to get the X use case. You don't need other devs to buy in... you can generously write specs to help them replicate your feature, but all the time you put there is time and energy you don't dedicate to your customers and their needs.

As I replied earlier, you can't sign everything that the indexer serves, so the only option here is that you go read the original post from the homeserver if you care.
Sure signatures might have made that slightly better, but again many or most of the data the indexer serves simply can't be signed by the author.
Anyways, if you showed the team that signatures can materially improve Pubky, nothing in the protocol will prevent them from adding signatures, but they may still choose to not bother because the juice is not worth the squeeze.
I am happy that i didn't force my personal opinions of signed merkle trees and end to end encryption from the get go, as that would have delayed the app at least a year.
Now the team can do whatever they want. But at least the app is already here and ready to prove its design thesis which is entirely orthogonal to this conversation.

No, you can't derive an ed25519 key from nsec in a way that is drivable from your npub. Meaning you will still have to tell people what is your ed25519 key, but if they know that, they can also know what are your relays, so not much reason to use the DHT.
The catch is the same catch as Nip05, you have to support it at client side.

Hello, the author of Pkarr that uses Mainline DHT here, you can go to app.pkarr.org and put your npub and relays and whatever you want to put in a DNS packet (because that is what it is).
The only problem that prevented Nostr from adopting Pkarr despite my constant advocacy for it for almost two years; the root identity HAS to be ed25519 key, this is not my decision this is what the biggest DHT in the world decided to use decade ago (see estimate of number of nodes here relay.pkarr.org).
So yeah I would love it if Nostr supports Pkarr as a root identity or at least as much as it supports ICANN with Nip05... but that is up to client developers.

Urbit was 100% designed with cloud in mind, listen to the inventory... he just hoped that "confidential computing" would solve the trust issue... which at least Signal agrees with, but if you want to be a purist, it doesn't help that much, you need to trust the chip designers and other assumptions.
Laptops get closed often, fighting the cloud is not viable, but we can make all data E2ee so that the compute happen on your machine but data availability is handled by the cloud.

Merkle Treap is my favorite data structure, it is a mutable sortable merkle tree.
Sortable means you get perfect locality of pointers, instead of the randomisation of hash maps.
Mutable meaning you can add or remove elements while changing Only the nodes on the path from the changed element to the root.
Every update happens from the top bottom, as opposed to bottom up as usual in Merkle trees like the one used in Git.
It is just a joy.
The only downside is if you are using it for set reconciliation with multiple writers, a bad writer can mine keys such that the treap degenerates into a linked list.
So for set reconciliation from multiple untrusted writers, you should use RBSR like Negentropy.

Peergos is an open alternative to Proton Drive offering end to end encrypted filesystem where the server is entirely a dumb host/storage. Put so far it relied on a centralised identity layer similar to Bluesky.
Mlkut.org is my personal effort to port that e2ee filesystem to Rust, simplify it, and replace the centralised identity with Pkarr.
As for why is that helpful, it is because Pkarr tells every client exactly who hosts your data at any moment in time giving you unbroken URLs and strong consistency, while the rest of Mlkut gives you full control over who can read and/or write to any folder or file in your filesystem.
That allows you to use wide variety of open source apps to author and share and publish, but it also allows for collaboration and you can compose these folders to build an emergent community, like forums or groups with moderation etc... there are things that you can't do with only these primitives, but for small world usecases, you can go so far with only this.
Let me put it this way; if you can imagine building it with Proton Drive / Google Drive, you should be able to build it with Mlkut, but also no vendor lock.

The unit that is really incentivezed is the unit that enough individuals incentives, either with money or relationships.
Peergos.net has been running on fumes for more than a decade because on person cares enough and charges enough and gets enough grants. Ente's CEO had his first salary after 5 years.

So many apps would benifit from an open source alternative to Proton Drive, and while we are at it no vendor lock and you can migrate servers while keeping all your URLs and shares functional.
And if that took off, everytime an app refuses to integrate with it, an open source app would fill the void.

If you are in the market for a free and open source alternative to Proton Drive, you should check peergos.org the founder have been working on this for 11 years with no VC money as a matter of principle.
And if you would rather have these features in Nostr apps, I started working on a Rust library (Peergos is written in Java) that can be embedded in any client with no opinions on the identity layer.

My bias is that unique names are red herring and only matters to major brands, while users are happy with phone numbers in WhatsApp for example, and they can use local names for their contacts.
I challenge you to remember the twitter handles of a good fraction of the people you follow on Twitter and other platforms, it doesn't matter, the search box / search engines reliably get you what you want, so why memorize.
As others said, Zokoo triangle is like the speed of light, you will never be able to break it, all you can do is claim that your registry is better than ICANN registry, and you would be wrong, ICANN is more trustworthy, and honest about what they do.
My idea was merely to mitigate the downsides of very long public keys, so they are more like a nice permissionless url shortening.
Finally, it is important to note that human readable names are less useful to security than public keys, because the later demand some WoT or something, while human readable names are trusted for no reason, so you end up with stuff like JackDorseey and all these shenanigans.
Note that WhatsApp does a perfect job there; it shows you whatever the caller names themselves but in grey color and prefixed with a ~ ... then only when YOU name them, the name is in black and no ~ prefixes
This (and the many subjective WoT efforts) are the only way to do this without reinventing ICANN and Certificates Authorities.
But maybe I am wrong, would love to see a break through in what was assumed impossible.

I think we can steal Urbit IDs, and use Bitcoin for the fair and permissionless distribution, no sale, no transfer, no renewal, nothing, just short human readable names.

In fact, Bluesky is much more likely to implement any change to the protocol and interop, clients or server side, because development is just as centralised as Bitcoin, Git or Linux. And that is independent from whether the network is centralised or not. You can have a reference implementation but thousands of instances, or you can have only one server but fragmented clients.

The issue isn't privacy, it is scaling. Although with Drivechains you can have chains that are private. Monero does not solve scaling it adds one more token you have to worry whether it will be acceptable or not. That goes against adoption.

Ok at least ecash is trying to make Bitcoin available to everyone, but I don't think ecash banks are going to survive such cracking down.
At most respect to all the operators that don't require KYC, to a great risk to themselves, but they won't survive, I am afraid.

I did play with it but not enough to stand by it yet, whenever I tried it it didn't seem complex but still clunky, however they don't do anything I wouldn't do myself except with great effort so I can't judge them for not ironing out the interface yet, it is not an easy task.

Whenever someone compares miners to a federation or a consortium they keep omitting the most mind boggling fact, the magic of PoW blockchains and Nakamoto consensus, the unprecedented computer science breakthrough that is; Anyone can join without asking the existing set of operators for permission, in fact even if all operators disappear someone can ressume the service, again without permission.
There is absolutely nothing like that anywhere else, and for a god reason; it is expensive like a mf, and only rarely woth the cost.

Whenever a feature needs to be in every client for the protocol to be safe and usuable, I can't help but think: Platform. Browsers had to do the green lock thing for example.
When you need to protect users from apps, then you need a platform, be it operating systems or browsers.

If Blockchains had no shitcoin (merge minning and two way beg) no one would be pretending that they are not useful. They clearly offer services that can't be offered any other way without either KYC or the UX and rug pulls of black markets.
If I was building on Bitcoin, I would just assume that Drivechains are a thing, and if they never happen then the only opportunity cost is not working on a whole other industry, because the status quo is doomed for becoming either a small KYCed industry or obscure black market anarchy.
It will became ridiculous when all LSPs are asking you to KYC, or geoblocking you, while Tether on Tron is the only acceptable thing at your local non-kyc exchanges.

Another thing about Peergos is that it puts so much effort into being p2p friendly with IPFS baggage and complexity that is only needed for people to be able to host random parts of your data in a p2p... I personally think all of that baggage is not helpful... no one uses peergos in a p2p manner nor they ever will.
So the question is how much simpler can we get if we remove all of that Protocol Labs stuff.
