This is crazy ridiculous. These poor people.
With all the problems in the world, the focus of the state is to capture and execute a squirrel...
Should I write something, that works due to some miracle, in OO or functional style?
I suspect some people can only do the one or the other, well, so they demonize whichever one they suck at.
Luckily, I suck at both, so I'm unbiased.
Done. 😀

GM ☀️ "There are 2 ways to write error free programs. Only the third one works"
I write long-form (markdown) and wiki (Asciidoc) multiple times, per week, and just decided to switch my git readme to Asciidoc because otherwise it's a PITA to format all the diagrams etc.
I mean, think about it, it's the equivalent of publishing all the contacts in your address book. "These are the people whose email I read." 😬
We used to do it, so that we could curate our feed or judge the quality of unfamiliar content, but we have more-effective means of that, now. We should always and everywhere, as a general principle, design things to be least-revealing.
So... why is everyone stuck in Instagram mode?
What purpose does it serve to publicly broadcast who you are following/muting?
Yeah. I've been trying to keep up the with the scriptkiddies, on here, and it just turned into a big ball of mud.
Less safe if you wear a maga hat though.
Meh... Probably close to perfectly safe.
Yeah, but it's amazing at what low code size objects already usually make sense.
Just cut my code size, after making a class diagram and rethinking it. It's now extremely readable, too.
As soon as you have objects, a major refactoring finally works. 😂
What doesn't work for me: OO-programming without a class diagram. Whole thing turns into 🍝
Because they used to just have some whatever-relays, so it was impossible to figure out which ones you might like. But, we're going to get better about that.
...and I am not ashamed. 😅

Running your own personal relay is like a Nostr superpower because you can be publicly active, without everyone and their mother all up in your business, but
https://media.tenor.com/ZeD-08soBE8AAAAC/choi-hoes-mad.gif
You may not realize this, but some people don't do #TheFollowThing because they have personal #relays where they allow/block npubs to the relay, or they use #DVM feeds or other #algos, so they keep what they're looking at **private**.
Some people have moved on, technology-wise, but those are some of the most-active npubs.
https://i.pinimg.com/564x/0c/ff/7d/0cff7d1f1a51d9172032ee9bda548721.jpg
The way we're doing it is very market-approach, as the user chooses the login method and gravitates to the products that support that method. So, the user can "vote with their feet", for which logins are the best.
Which one?
Asciidoc is implemented in wiki events, like https://wikistr.com. We are using the https://asciidoctor.org/ parser in Alexandria.
Gherkin scenarios are coming from me, running them with https://behave.readthedocs.io/en/latest/. Might make an event kind, for that, so that I can link them with the issue events and repo events.
https://plantuml.com/ will be implemented in Alexandria, using the https://docs.asciidoctor.org/diagram-extension/latest/diagram_types/plantuml/ They have a whole bunch of extensions, tho, like LaTeX and ePUB and etc. https://asciidoctor.org/docs/extensions/
I keep going to normal websites and be like, "Where's the Login With Extension button?" 🤔
Free market in logins is actually pretty cool. We will come up with #PeakLogin.
That's true. Typescript devs are really a dime-a-dozen.
I strongly suspect that most people with no concept doc simply aren't knowledgeable enough to write a good one. That's a whole separate skill set, from coding.
Someone with lots of experience is really fast, and they literally "think" the design through, by editing the design docs, so that everyone around them can see them "thinking" in real-time, and collaborate through a discussion of the docs.
Did you miss the long thread about Primal?
Once you get used to Asciidoc, Markdown seems literally retarded.
Once you get used to PlantUML, drawing diagrams seems literally retarded.
Once you get used to Gherkin, writing prose specifications seems literally retarded.
Once you get used to Nostr, logging in to normal websites seems literally retarded.

What Nostr really shows, is the massive quality gap between hacking and engineering.

Noise, from people who don't even have a feature list or some manual tests. I don't have to convince them, tho, since I'm replacing them.

All the hating on software design, test, and automation, in here, is sort of ironic, since Nostr has almost only produced bad software.
By the third iteration, at the latest, "just hack it, bro" begins to break down and regressions creep out. Sometimes Nostr prototypes don't even work well enough, to demo the concept.
All you've done is tell us about your chaotic, atomized work environment, the lack of automation, a code base tied too closely to the feature set, and the fact that you can't refactor without regression.
Classic big, ball of mud architecture.

Yes. Community is in your neighborhood. There is no one closer geographically. Trunk or treat is the main cause for the tradition of Halloween dying out. I want to see my neighborhood filled with decorations and every house handing out candy with kids flooding the streets. I want to ban trunk or treating because is has regressed community and tradition of Halloween. We get a dozen kids in the whole neighborhood and only one in every ten houses participates. I am striving for community. 🫂 Our children deserve the same Halloween experiences we got.

For now, keep minors off of nostr. You can be held liable for exposing them to really, really nasty stuff that is present, just not as much as in other platforms (yet).
Until you can keep keys in a walled garden, nostr is not, IMO, appropriate for minors, unless their parents approve with VERY informed consent.

The corner of the screen in the first video and the corner of the object box in the second video. I just see shitty programming and shitty LCD screens. Most likely they kept touching so hard to get it to select Trump that their finger barely touched the screen below over top of Harris.
As I said, I've bought shitty Android tablets that do exactly this. The touch sensitivity is absolute garbage on them. I can't see foul play when I've experienced this many times myself.
Think about it? If someone is going to cheat, they're not going to do it in plain sight. The cheating would happen under the hood, in the software. What does showing a wrong selection do? Nothing besides make people choose whom they originally wanted. You're not a very good criminal or cheater if you tell everyone you're cheating.
Well... Yes. That's a small volume and a minisplit would have trouble keeping that small of a volume at your temperature efficiently. It would have to cycle on and off rather often unless you do some pre-conditioning and intentional ventilation.
I'm seeing more issues now. You will want to keep it at a higher humidity than what humans find particularly comfortable. A minisplit that is ruining correctly will pull too much water out of the air. You'll need something like a ducted system to add in a humidifier, but with that small of a volume, you'll need to extend the length of the ducting into and out of the tent (basically creating a mostly closed loop system) in order to control temperature and humidity well enough for your purposes.
And mold is going to be an issue on all the equipment.

There is no wallet "holding coins." you have the keys to open an address. "Wallets" are signing apps/devices that allow access to initiate a transaction.

No thanks. I don't trust blockstream that much.
It's not confusing to follow instructions. It took me longer to buy an SD card than to initiate my first child wallet.
That does not translate to tech. Like, at all. 😁
And with that you have to compromise security. So, a coldcard is, IMO the simplest way to be the most secure.
Yes, there is. Geez. Nostr is for everyone.
Heya, NG!
It's a good day! I hope you have a good one! What's on the agenda for today?
Yes! Users can help by setting up topical relays. Cooking relays, travel relays, etc.
It can and will be done in some cases. Those that don't want to are narrowly limiting a natural expansion of a relay's abilities under certain circumstances.
Uh... Why should I care? We're all plebs here. GTFO with all that other BS.
You did it.
Anyone that cares can do it.
I started doing it very recently. I really wasn't nervous at all. The precedure was straightforward and everything worked.
I looked at it. The coldcard is more secure and in some ways simpler. (IMO.)
It's really not. It's literally moving an SD back and forth between devices. The lack of understanding does make it scary, sure. But even I've managed to do it recently and it really is better than trusting anyone else with your life savings.
Probably better to just refer to the owner npub in the NIP11. I have thought about making an npub for my relays before though. It could be done now and used as the owner npub.
How's the ankle doing?

The christpill.nostr1.com relay has been the biggest help, so far.
Not really. I use them, but don't notice any effect, since most people aren't following them in their feed. Also, lost of hashtags are full of spam.
The biggest relays are Bitcoin topical relays, sometimes leaning toward Nostr Dev relays.
Give other topical relays a chance, in the default client settings, so that newbies can choose which topics they'd prefer.
Good luck getting someone to find you, if you talk about AnythingElse. Even Christians find it difficult to network, on here, and we're not just 5 npubs.
The only thing that helps is getting away from Kind 01 on the big relays.

Paid relay provider or community relay domain is also probably okay.
That's not a "malfunction."
Or physically exterminate the cause of them. That's right and proper at times.
Build an app.
Use your jumbo npub and Class A contacts to promote it over better solutions.
Leave for weeks or months on vacation or a conference or some distant planet.
Let the app atrophy and ignore issues.
Continue to accept compliments from users who don't use the app, or are sycophants, while everyone else moves on.
Build another app...
Winning.
You're welcome. From what I've seen, #alexandria is the only client being properly developed. Other apps/clients are functional, at times, but... Are not built correctly.
I suppose another example would be amethyst. Vitor is a proper dev, but... I don't exactly care for his style and bullying things into nostr that I don't think belong (at least not yet).
I use amethyst, which mostly works most of the time.
Loud and proud. 😂
I think Javascript is already "out". It's all Typescript, now.
Know what I mean? I've seen people who know how to program in other languages also learn Typescript (I'm being forced into it, myself), but I rarely see people do the reverse. They just do increasingly complex things with Typescript.
They don't seem to ever think,
You know... 🤔... This would be better in C.

I'm not supposed to be doing all this client development. 😂 I keep fiddling around with this stuff, instead of writing my scenarios and automating, like a good little bunny.
I'm _supposed_ to be focused on Python, C++, Java and PHP, but now the scriptkiddies got me editing apps written entirely in Typescript and I'm not happy.
Ah. Well. I see. (But I don't understand.)
Yes, but... That's still easy for a very few to bully newer people into silence. Which has already happened.
Look at how @gitcitadel is building #alexandria
I just added an AUTH relay and looked to see if it wrote (it didn't).
I don't know. I still don't understand Auth on relays. 😅
Ha ha. This is not really a thing, but hope springs eternal.
Ya know... You should learn go 😂

#devs
I don't understand why they use Typescript and Javascript for EVERYTHING.
Das Rabbit have AUTH, now. It didn't, last time I checked.
Got excited, but it's Typescript.
If you look at most repos (and most Nostr repos), there are no tests. None. Nada. And they don't have any manual testers and often ignore issues from users.
They just push-n-pray, often directly to main and production systems, so their released websites are constantly broken, and then they move on and don't look back, until people start frantically tagging them in Kind 01 notes.
Rabbit is a good viewer. It has quirks but it is simple and straightforward. It's a web client.
Outside of a few web clients that seem to function well (but not correctly, IMO), nothing is proper yet for nostr. At all.
Web apps seem easier to throw together, but a good native developer can't be beat by a good web developer because the latter is running the system within a native app (the browser), so it's abstracted away another level. Therefore, web dev has it's own advantages. 🤷🏻♀️
We forked Alexandria from a web app running on NDK (mostly Typscript) and we're already making plans to fall back to our own C++ libraries. I've been sticking to the PHP Helper for my own stuff, since I can actually read that code and follow the logic. And it has tests! 🥳 like so:
https://github.com/nostrver-se/nostr-php/blob/main/tests/RelayResponseTest.php
I have found it personally worth it. I'm healthier, wealthier (in BTC terms), more knowledge, and maybe a bit wiser than before.
So many people don't know this tale.
#nevent1q…2c8d
Yes. I see it all the time in humans that don't even want to put in minimum effort 8 hours a day.
As long as this thing has power, it will keep working. It's also learning as it goes and will iterate efficiency in ways tasty most humans won't. Soon enough robots like this will be moving faster that humans at the same tasks and will be replacing humans at low-skill jobs and then, eventually, high skill jobs where repetition and/or high risk are involved.
It's because they can have one responsive website and then not care about where/how it runs, elsewhere. In theory. In practice, some only work on my PC and others on my cell phone and others only with one browser and (Nostr) with one particular signer and the page doesn't resize properly, so that I have to scroll way to the right, to see the buttons. 🤪
And slow, slow, slow, everywhere.
@nprofile…qlr4 you might want to know about this.
I'll have to try to poke around later, too.
#nevent1q…58h2
Run a mini split. No duct needed. Just mount the air handler on a frame in the tent. You can find a widw variety to pick from. One of the "higher ends" models that can maintain a set temperature would be useful for your purposes.
With any solution, you'll need to watch it for mold, though.
If you don't like that idea, there are still ducted heat pumo setups. They typically cost 25-50% more, but may suit your needs better.
PHP is sort of a weird, inbetween space, because a lot of it uses frameworks and stuff. Even the repos that don't implement symfony, often pull the validator or have Doctrine running, or etc.
Another thing I've noticed, is that scripted stuff tends to utilize lots of tiny libraries from whomever wherever whatever, whereas the native apps are more likely to use larger frameworks, simply code that module themselves, or have it added to their SDK.
Web apps sometimes go wild with inexplicable dependencies, half of which are deprecated or throw errors. And when you look at what that library does in the program, it's like 10 lines of code spared. So much of it is like a trash heap with more and more trash heaped on top. Another layer. Another library. Another dependency. Just import *, rather than only what you actually use, etc.
No. This would leave out many people who can't travel. And it would lead to further concentrating "influence" over what it supposed to be an open protocol.
Not exactly. I'm technically running both on an startOS server. But I don't know what I'm doing yet. 😅
The best web apps I've seen were B2B and the teams often included people from other specialties/branches, with stringent quality requirements. Like, I'm originally from the GAMP area and automotive. We had a DBA from the insurance sector, etc.
The other replies sum up my concerns with bigger blocks. There's also the issue of bigger blocks being abused by more ordinal type BS. I just don't see the upside.
Hmm. I've worked for years on both, for the banking sector.
-- Web apps are easier to run universally, so they attract all the scriptkiddies, whose repos grow and grow, without any additional QC later added.
-- Web apps are demoed live, on a website, which is an active server on a machine someone else controls. Nobody knows if the demo website is the same as the build, unless they're running it themselves.
-- Websites can be more easily updated (which is great for pushing bug-fixes to a test/beta environment), which can lead to forcing users to upgrade to broken or compromised releases.
-- Users are used to weird popups and splashscreens all over websites, whereas strange behavior on native clients freaks them out.
-- Secure web apps require tight and smooth DevOps and automated testing in multiple virtual environments, but native devs are actually more-likely to implement those things.
-- They are also more-likely to write clean code and have unit tests.
-- Javascript, especially, seems to be dodgy.
Etc.
Native apps are generally more secure (and efficient) than web apps.
Web apps can be high-quality, but it's a lot of effort, the work never ends, and web app developers tend have less experience with QM.
The algorithm can only curate the dataset it's been given, so you need a broad-topic data set. It's a symbiosis.
Hmmm....yes. Always consider why something came to be, before changing it or removing it.
That would be an argument for upholding traditions, and that has been a losing argument since the 1950s.
Another thing you can do is heavily-limit who can merge to master, by having that reserved for a separate admin account. Remove collaborators who are not actively working on the project, with 3 months.
Primal is a Strike wallet with a kind01 backend.
Ah, weird. You might want to ask Vitor about the discrepency.
Turned it around. Finally a win!

Yes, we have. Most people outside of countries with unlimited data plans cannot sync the ~1TB that the blockchain is now.
You must run a full chain (in my understanding) in order to have a better time with any sort of lightning stuff. That takes a certain minimum of hardware and power to do. Increasing those requirements is not healthy for the long term wide adoption of BTC in a self-sovereign manner.
Setup a company outside the US and backend WoS.
🤷♂️
I think some nostr devs need to:
A. Stop suckling on the teet of people who don't really care about the same things as most plebs.
B. Stop using janky libraries.
C. Grow some balls and build systems so robust that they can't be taken down.
All of this is just fiat-minded BS that really needs to stop. It's actively hindering building the foundation that nostr needs to not only scale but to literally replace the current internet. (And I'm betting it can, and will.)
Playing KYC patty-cake and relying on JS turdly libraries is typical pump and dump VC BS. That needs to stop.
The stupid, egotistical, adolescent "we're number one" mindset is coming home to roost.
Primal is trash and dangerous. IDGAF what's supposedly coming. Having the lead say "we'll get to that tomorrow" is maddening and shows how little GAF that team has for anyone but their big bags VC money pumpers.
I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, and even I can see these issues as plain as day. I also have so little invested that it's really easy for me to call out the BS when I see it. Primal harshes my mellow, man.
Primal uses Strike's backend and that makes to KYC to use the built in wallet, but no other solution is point and click easy for sending and receiving Zaps. Cashu wallets are medium acceptable here, I guess, if you use Zeus or Phoenix as your wallet and constantly loop out to Lightning.
Looking at what it takes to run a node:
&*<( larger blocks. 😅
How terrible can this be?

Internal 2.5" SATA for now. I still need to get another nvme drive so I can have some redundancy for my server configuration (via raid 1). I have enough ram for now. I don't need to upgrade the ethernet for now, either. (I might eventually get the double 2.5gbps ports so I can run the server as a controller for the network, eventually.)
It's also not what I'm willing to spend and I'm not sure I care about the warranty that much.
But thank you.
Primal is, IMO, trash. I can't help you much since you're an iSlave. (I'm sort of joking. A de-googled android phone is the best option these days if you care about any sort of privacy online, but, you do have to do a bunch of work to make that happen.)
You can use a bunch of lightning wallets without KYC. You'll have to earn sats or transfer sats to that wallet to start zapping. Primal muddles this tremendously.
I think I'll still work an internal drive for now.
I don't want the block size to increase and I'm really over lighting as a viable non-custodial small payment system. I don't know Jack about ark and liquid is a bit squiffy but interesting.
I'm not on that curve at all.
You don't have issues with external drives?
Reliability and price. Speed us not the issue. This will be only for the blockchain.
Does anyone have a better option than this?

Also make sure that you're using a specific version of third-party software, and not "latest", as you can automatically-import compromised code, that way, even if you don't touch the repo.
They have to in order to be as evil as possible. But, a lot of their own source stuff is very solid.
Yes. Scarcity leads to control. Always. Except... This is a very, very abundant place.
My buddy got his big belt sander running again. (The VFD died. 🙄)
A big belt sander makes really short work of flattening things like this. One side is done and flat within 1/16" (~1.5mm), which is totally fine for this. The other side needs a bit of touch up, as you can see in the last pic of this set. I was expecting more, honestly. The few spots that aren't sealed around the outermost ring aren't an issue since that is past where the gasket will seal.
I'll finish it up on Sunday.

Targeting Ethereum stuff.
It's not a crypto library, but all the Web3 guys use it for the crypto animations and wallet-selection pop-up messages, so it was targeted by the hackers because it's commonly used to prompt wallet stuff upon opening a website.
It's still running on some websites and draining wallets, including Bitcoin ones.
@npub1f6u…zcka probably has a longer list, but I'd start an audit for anything that produces animation or pop-up messages, anything that effects relay management, utilizes or checks signatures, or deals with payment rails.
Also, make sure to have GUI tests running, around the clock, on an animation or build server. That will tend to catch unexpected pop-ups because those tend to be modal and the test will time-out and fail. Make sure one of the tests uses a new npub, logging on for the first time, as that is sometimes a different workflow.
Favor clean, quiet design, rather than confusing, overloaded interfaces with things blinking and moving and scrolling, all over, or that get the fan whirring when they load. That constant messiness/chaos reduces the chances that a user will notice when something is amiss. Favor text messages on the page, over extra message boxes, that need to be clicked to close.
And no informational splash screens, please. Do not allow users to get used to weird client behavior.
And if your users report something like just happened, investigate it immediately, even if you have to pull a night shift, and then report back, publicly (if it is confirmed). If your users feel alarmed, so should you.
I'm old. I kinda know better... But, I like to ask and learn from people who are doing the thing.
I'm still always going to give out candy though 🍬
Too many good memories as a kid going from house to house.
Yes. Super over-spec for the purpose, but, pretty much perfect without being expensive or a raspi. 😁
Yup.
We do not have a solid foundation for most of this stuff, yet. Stop being lazy. Do the right thing.
#nevent1q…mzg5
Easy enough. I'll bump the core count up on that VM, also. Just cuz I can and it's not doing much of anything else at the moment.
Currently 32. I got one with more since this is a VM server.
Too many 3rd-party libraries. We need to go back and code our own stuff, or audit the code we integrate. We're handling financial transactions, but leaving the users sitting ducks.
And stop putting the wallet front-and-center. We should not be conditioning users to think about hooking up a wallet, before they even really logged on, or acclimating them to wallet-stuff being constantly in-their-face.
Please also stop pressuring new users to immediately get a zap wallet, as that's leading them to make poor choices in which wallet to use. It is problematic, if a zap wallet requires KYC, even if it doesn't validate the entered data, as some people will still enter real data and it normalizes entering personal data.
And test your software. Sloppy software, that throws up a bunch of error messages and way too many permission messages, as soon as you open it, will lead to everyone just clicking things away, rather than reading the messages or feeling the alarm that they naturally should. Only ask for permissions when you actually need them, and not "in advance".
And can we please move away from java/typescript-everything? It's all a house of cards.

My tiny pc has a an 8th Gen i5-8600 (6 core, 35W TDP processor. I can't stand raspis. So just that alone pushes me to an SSD since it will be fast enough to not screw up. This is making enough sense now.

What you say about the drive makes sense.
You can't block anyone. He just doesn't post a lot. Unless you have a custom algorithm like @nprofile…8grv talked about at Nostr Valley then you will be unlikely to see certain things because of timing.

But that's pretty rad that he'll be able to recover his sats
So...
To SSD or HD?
Context: BTC node.
Requirements: low power, low noise, decent longevity.
Possible concerns with an SSD:
-write life
-higher initial outlay for 2TB drive (as per advice)
Concerns with HD:
-Higher power consumption
-no clue about reliability vs. SSD in this aoplication
Thoughts? Experiences?

I've had a small Lightning channel of 1M sats closing for MONTHS. I can't bump it. There's only 10K sats on my side, so I don't really care. I decided to go back through old Plebnet chats and found the node owner. He didn't know he had 990,000 sats sitting there in limbo 😮 His node is dead because of hardware issues. Watching Arnie ride a camel is worth it. 😁
I'm re-watching the original movie Conan the Barbarian.
Arnie's bag acting aside, it's actually a good movie. The plot is legit decent. Some of the s a actors are just good. The action is 80s cheesy, but... Honestly better than most others of the time.

E.g. Dude shows up. Makes two low-effort notes, gets boosted and quoted by some big npubs, ends up in third place on the trending list and people literally trying to hunt him down off-Nostr, to throw money at him and beg him to come back. ROFLMAO.
It's a total crap-shoot, really, because some npubs are just such big fish, in our tiny pond, that everything they do shifts the entire current. They don't necessarily do it on purpose, but we can observe it happening, every day.

Can you zap anyone else? Maybe your wallet isn't configured?
Do you have a github repository? I would prefer to install it via Obtanium instead of the play store. Thank you.
Was it the one from circa 35 minutes ago?
That's why I'm wondering what actually happened.
I might.
I'm just questioning the premise of your questions. I don't think you should be bothering to worry about that.
Organizational BTC is a very complex topic. It's not a good idea to have one person hold the keys to a "wallet." (Gosh, I hate that term in the context of BTC.) Multi-sig is the bare minimum, IMO.
I do appreciate your neutrality, tho, @npub1zaf…26k5 . It says good things about Damus, that you are working so hard for the project.
But I'm more of an auditor, than a peacemaker, and Primal has been giving off code-smells the whole time. There's some fundamental problem, with the way the project is managed, and it isn't being addressed.
I received the zap, tho. Thanks, by the way! 😊

Yes, but I expect them to then be upfront about what happened and _immediately_ investigate it themselves, and openly self-report with their biggest npub.
They should be aggressively transparent.
Yeah, don't bother trying to change my mind on Primal. Waste of your time.
I wonder what they were using it for, and what is now broken, by removing it. It must have been doing _something_ important, or it wouldn't have been activated by the users over and over.
Did they just comment it out in that commit and everything goes back to normal? That's.... weird.

I wonder who is on the Damus recommendation list? 🤔 I've only seen the one from Primal, since I'm on Android.
I'm assuming this isn't aimed at me.
I've never had someone complain that I critique Nostr apps too infrequently.
But Primal is a doozy.

Yes, that's what Primal also does.
The Primal trending list is a different topic.
Nope. I tend to not care about watches. I like my $6 watch. It's cheaper than the Lego set would be. 😅
Why did the devs from other apps have to figure this out and report it to us? Where are their devs? Where are they ever?
Where did they dig up this library? Why were they using it?
Why have they left that repo to rot for 6 months?
Also, they've been like this, from the beginning. I'm incredibly underwhelmed by the entire project. I've always encouraged people to switch to a different kind 01 client, as soon as possible, and I bet that those that switch early, are more likely to stick around.
You can move to an active approval model.
I don't know how many people try to use your support. Approving would be a hassle if it's a high volume, so, I get that having a paywall as an effective filter is appealing, especially since you're trying to grow.
Honestly, I get it. I was just very surprised by $100, especially since I just got startOS running this week. 😅
Okay, I thought so. I have Android, but I remember @npub1xts…kk5s talking about it, to get rid of ReplyGuy, or something.
Yup. I am guessing that someone forgot to use a VPN or tor and made a transfer.
Which client did that guy onboard with, that he got bombarded with Bitcoin content, even though he didn't want that?
Maybe default/suggested relays need to get adjusted to include some like hotrightnow and christpill, or something else topical.
That's no fun. I hope you recover soon!

That's Amethyst, but I think Damus also does something similar, right @npub1zaf…26k5?
More people need to know.

That's what I'm wondering.
That doesn't explain how or even if it was monero that was compromised or the valorous launderers of money simply screwed up with basic opsec.
God. (Poorly, but still.)
So I'm not interested in worrying about what the satanic pedo death cult gubment thinks about my money and what I do with it.

Yeah, financial trading and arbitrage is how a lot of big corps make their money, nowadays. The others are just worse at it; making money off of consumer financing, like GM did, or trading stock options or whatnot.
Don't know why they don't all do this. That's the real question.
It's funny because it's true. We want Nostr to succeed and we want new users to feel welcome.
You don't see Nostr's value-added, in itself, but mainly as an additional conduit for Lightning payments?
I've been using Linux, at home, since like 2005, and tested on a Linux/Windows dual-boot since the 1998 or something, but this will be my first Official Work LinuxOnly Laptop.

This user deleted his profile shortly after joining Nostr, but it wasn't because of the community. If you read the early comments before he deleted his profile, you'll see Nostriches providing help. They're giving him instructions on how to find tune his feed, choose his own algorithm, and make the most of Nostr - no matter the content.
I don't think we as a community could have done any better in this example.
I believe this failure at user retention was not at the fault of the community, but more so on the user not willing to learn.
Could we have done better? Sure. There's always room for improvement.
However, the user needs to be willing to learn as well. They need to be willing to step outside their comfort zone, just a little, and learn.
Better luck next time.

CEO had a terrible attitude and I told him that he wasn't going to last long and he didn't.
The increasing follow-concentration is a direct result of their trending list and their preset follow-list for newbies. This was immediately obvious, from the get-go, but they have just left it like that.
Also, whilst the majority of the other devs and relay-managers immediately jumped on the ReplyGuy issue, Primal was lackadaisical. They are often AWOL, and they don't seem to use the relay, web client, or image server, themselves, on a daily basis, so they let the systems atrophy, and fill up with literal garbage, while performance crawls to a halt.
The other devs are eventually annoyed by their own stuff being broken, since they use it regularly themselves, but Primal devs are like vegan butchers. They can legit watch their repos rot for half a year and not give a damn. I've seen a lot, but that takes the cake.
Primal got way too much funding and way too much adoring press, from the get-go. They're front-and-center at the conferences, of course, talking a big game. They be like

I have questions.
#nevent1q…my6c
It's custodial lightning with extra steps
I've thought this for a while. It's especially true since many people don't understand that they aren't locked into "an app."
Bitcoin Twitter was better (content-wise) than this because the posts faced more competition for attention and the replies weren't just Bitcoiners, so you had to stay on your toes.
Making Nostr all about Bitcoin seems to have sucked in a bunch of grifters and finance-suits-in-hoodies, and it's turned newcomer's microblogging feeds into a cheesy, discount-version of Bitcoin Twitter.
Nostr has zaps, but zaps aren't the reason Nostr exists. Nostr predates the zap. Nostr has its own agenda. The real Nostr devs care about Nostr, for its own sake, and not just as a place to spend Bitcoin.
This note is signed with my private key and published to the relay on my laptop. GFY.
#nevent1q…eqfw
Then you're just locked into the mint... eCash is even worse custodially... There is no way to verify mint holdings because of the privacy aspects.
It's not preferable. Hoping Ark can illuminate a better solution.
Oops. Oh, duh. Well, I don't notice, either way, so it makes me happy.
They forget that the feeds can be merged in the clients, or you can post to multiple relays, simultaneously, or feed the notes from other relays into your relays. It's like lots of brooks that can criss-cross, rather than a river.
If you don't like Bitcoin, but still like Nostr, here's one simple trick to remove the vast majority of Bitcoin content! I suspect a lot of the problems Nostr has been having are a direct result of people onboarding through Primal, but it won't let up until Primal finally goes away or completely reforms.
I suspect that it's a majority of those onboarding, lately, unfortunately, but we manage to salvage some of them and get them to other clients.

They've been using crypto libraries, while marketing themselves as a Bitcoin app, yes, and it sort of bubbled up, due to an attack on the library.
Primal web repo hasn't moved in 6 months, not even a bug-fix, but they rolled back this particular commit, last night. 😅
Their whole "Bitcoin Nostr" schtick always rubbed me the wrong way, anyway, as Nostr isn't supposed to just be for Bitcoiners, and they turned Nostr into a feeder for Strike KYC, but whatever.

You could just run startOS on its own. That's easy. Like, burn a USB stick and reboot easy.
I was pursuaded away from umbrel for a wife variety of reasons. I'm sure that between me and a couple others we could get your stuff up and running. I would seriously recommend proxmox as a base setup for a VM server. It's a bit more fiddly to set up, but... You can do pretty much anything with it that's outside of what startOS is currently limited to doing. (but startOS does it very well, and I prefer that.)
Sure...
But to be fair, going carnivore for ~11 months has done more for my health than nearly anything else ever in my life. So... Fad or not, it works for me to get to my goals.
The other side of this is that I just don't care if other people are or not.
The money isn't to build the software. Building software is fun. People will do it for free or for tips. At least, for the initial big release.
The money is to MAINTAIN the software and SUPPORT the software. And that's where the actual talent comes into play, and qualities like honesty, integrity, empathy, diligence, etc.

Not yet, I'm pretty sure. And you'd pretty much need to keep it plugged in for any server stuff. Those drain the battery heavily due to the many simultaneous connections needed for simplex to work.
I'll be doing this with a startOS server, which I do have running on a tiny pc.
Still time to enter!

Thinking about it, I'm not sure I've ever had pumpkin soup. I love butternut squash soup, though.
I really could go for an apple tart right now. Your caramel apple (especially with properly made caramel) is certainly not a thing to play second fiddle against anything, though!
Have you every had apple cider donuts? They are dense, moist and coated in cinnamon and sugar. They are best fresh, and I think would pair very well with Chai!
Now I want all of those. 😅

I think everyone is slowly realizing that software doesn't actually scale, according to how much money you throw at it. Good software can be developed really cheaply. Bad software can be developed very expensively.

We were in #Frankfurt am Main last summer, but I never got around to posting the pics, so I'll just piggy-back on yours. This is from the same, restored Old Town, near the famous Frankfurter Römer city hall.
The church is the evangelical "Nikolaikirche" (Nicolas Church), and the (excellent) brunch was at Cafe Moenus, which is a tiny, cramped, self-service place on the corner, with relatively low prices. It was raining, but we still really enjoyed the nightly skyline-view from our hotel's roof-bar.

Silly me.
They are only a failure point, if they are global and accept all inputs.
This is one major problem that Nostr solves, that the "We all need to be using one of the big, public relays" people don't seem willing to acknowledge. The best way to make filtering easier and fairer, is to split the stream into lots of different channels, each moderated according to a different method, by different people.

One thing I've noticed, is that some people on here completely lack empathy. They don't realize that their "good vibes" stuff can be offensive, for instance, because they only talk to people who agree with them, so they think _everyone_ agrees with them. They're unaware of their own bubble.
Like, they'll be all "good vibes, only", but their feed is full of pictures of raw meat, which is like a slaughterhouse horror show, for anyone who isn't into that. Or someone will post pictures of cookies, unaware of how many people on here are 🫨 triggered by the sight of anything involving wheat.
Like, nearly anything anyone says or does can be taken offensively, by someone else, as there isn't a consensus across the entire population. Part of successful adulting is being able to deal with someone having a different opinion.
Fr. We can sit around the campfire and politely debate and agree, to disagree, but I don't do no kimbaya singing.

I will politely disagree. You don't need to charge for access if you control access. I have been part of many comminuties online over ~30 years that didn't charge but had very little spam out scammers because access and culture was such that it was very self-regulating.
But, I'm not saying you shouldn't charge. You are providing direct, quick access in an unprecedented manner that prioritizes those who have laid out significant fiat for your hardware. Having thought about that more over the last day, I've come to see why it us ultimately a good thing to do what you are doing for the sustainability of Start9.
I feel seen! 😅

That's a shame, but, it's not the end of the world.

This is the best and worst thing about tackling hard projects
Lovely. Thank you for sharing.
💯 We've come to the same conclusion.
Software can be freely shared, without much loss to the originator, as they are simply documents (that's why they're free speech). But services (including relays) that are "free and public" are prone to being
* short-lived (due to running costs and longer-term effort),
* of low quality or with a small userbase (size matters, to this discussion, because it effects the amount of cost or effort involved),
* heavily subsidized (so, controlled by third parties, rather than the users),
* or overrun by scammers and spammers.
#nevent1q…qypk
An "active followers" count would be more informative. Like, only people who have been active within the past 3 months, or something.
Number of lurkers doesn't really say much, as anyone can view our notes without loggin in, over the Internet. And, if I could have an active-follower list, I'd be inclined to peruse it, to see if anyone interesting is in there. They're following me, right? So, they might be pretty cool, right? 🤔
I have one more question @npub1xdt…ntxy can I update an article page by replacing the event, or is each article in a permanent state, once published to the website?
Just discovered another #Nostrudel dev-friendly feature:
It tells me when my server is down, by giving me a ❗ on my profile.
😅
I like the hashtag #name10books.
#nevent1q…dazh
404 not found. Did it work?
Dual boot is very useful.
I hate it.
I'm learning to run VMs on a small server so I never, ever have to dual boot again. 😅
Thy regularly is the hard part.
I think it's not actualizing the profile and relay-list data, at pain-points. Like, this morning, I had to go to my settings and refresh the relay page, and then go back to the "post" button, on the edit article view, in order to have the full, updated list.
We've crossed the #PeakNIP divide, where some of the NUDs are more widely-applicable than some of the NIPs, but we don't want to give anyone bad feels, so we just pretend it didn't happen.
Another easy thing you can do, is to publish it in a different event kind and then just promote the event in a kind 01 note, or publish it to a website.
People who can #Name10Books tend to browse the articles, including from people they don't follow. Eventually, this subset of users will be entering Nostr primarily over the various long-form and OtherStuff, like they currently do with Medium, Substack, GitHub, or SimplyRecipes, so make sure that you have your notes up there.
#note10nr…fxsl
Implicit list.
Like, when choosing someone to date. "He seems nice. Hope he calls me." versus "He gives me the ick."
Well, sure, but you can't write "this dev gives me the ick" on an audit report. 😅
I actually think -- paradoxically -- that the people drinking the Nostr kool-aid the hardest, often have the least appreciation for the solutions it offers, as a technology. That's why they sound like mindless fanatics, rather than discerning citizens.
They use Nostr for philosophical reasons, not for practical ones, but the philosophy should flow from the practicality. That's why they have trouble judging the efficacy of new concepts or voicing criticism for obviously stupid ideas or shoddy implementations. These are all "holy cows" to them, rather than tools to be used, that are more or less well-crafted or innovative.
You can use Nostr to create something simplistically brilliant, or convolutedly idiotic. Software isn't automatically better, just because it uses Nostr, but much software could be improved, by integrating Nostr. Only developers who understand what Nostr does -- and does well! -- are going to make the jump.
This is my prediction.
I see u, sister. 🫶
https://media.tenor.com/IBQE1UP052MAAAAC/arrested-development-dozens-of-us.gif
I sense that the urge to twist viable solutions, to run them "under Nostr", is going to be a short-lived phase. Solutions need to fit to the problem, and not be chosen for their own sake.
Not everything needs to be 💯 Nostr, but everything might eventually have a little bit of Nostr in it, or be inspired by some Nostr-derived construct, or be capable of integrating with Nostr.
It increasingly feels like Nostr has entered a second stage, where not everyone from the first stage will make it, but it won't end up where it's been headed. 🤔
Moving away from morally-overwrought Bitcointwitter 2.0 to a real communications protocol, that people will just use in their implementation -- along with other protocols -- because it solves some particular problem they're dealing with.
Because that's what Nostr did:
It solved some problems.

Anything specific, you are referring to?
The problem is that they're not working closely with people who heavily use their applications, so there are no incremental improvements.
Yeah, but #Alexandria will eventually also display long-form, so I'm now chill about it.

GM, to the GM Gestapo. 🤙🏻
Best, in this case, would be to show an informative message, that the post is not found, and then redirect to the author's profile.
I used to GM/GN more often, but then some of y'all turned it into a thing we _have_ to do, and that sucked all of the joy out of it.
Find it funny, that we went through the effort of starting a freedom protocol, and a bunch of control freaks immediately moved in and started policing the feeds and telling us what to write.

If you want to know why so many people are cloying sycophants to the mega-npubs:
The mega-npubs are the Nostr algo.
There's like 10 accounts, where, if they boost your stuff, thousands of people see it. If they don't, dozens of people see it. So everyone hangs around them and licks their toes.
Well, I don't, but I've got bad social skills.

I logged in with my browser extension.
Nope. It would be simpler, but would break lots of clients.
I can't find anyone who uses it, regularly. 🤔
Do you notice a difference, or is it just another client?
Yeah, like Biden's Inflation Reduction Act bought up all the big industrial companies with massive subsidies and tax breaks. They're all relocating to the States and laying people off or scrapping plans for new factories.
Germany tried to force companies to be more energy-efficient by raising the price of energy, but America does it by lowering the price of energy, while giving subsidies for reducing consumption.

I think this needs more eyeballs. Granted, I have no clue how to do this in code, but, I think it should go something like this:
1. The toilet would have an NFC reader nearby. Most of us have our phones with us when we go to poop, so...
2. A signing app is opened to initiate an NFC signing event.
3. The system the reader is attached to pulls down a list of settings via relays.
4. The bidet is set to your preferred butt blaster mode.
5. Butt blaster mode is initiated either automatically (per settings) or with another confirmation event. This could be a settings confirmation before initiation.
6. Your butt gets cleaned (and maybe dried, depending on the bidet's abilities) automatically.
7. Smile happily.
8. And since we're in fantasy land... This would be on every toilet in the whole world.

Oh! And check it Cocaine Crabs from Space. It's soooo hokey that it's funny. It reminds me of Tromaville movies from the 80s
Big Ass Spiders is another funny one, too.
The easy answer is write yourself in and vote for you. I've done it plenty of times. I've voted for Yoda, Magneto, Dr. Doom, Underdog and one of my grandfathers, also. Vote, but never join their cult.
I normally vote independent, but this year I'm voted early for Trump. This'll be his last time. So 4yrs of him being exactly who we know he'll be. His supporters are all new blood; making way for new ideas. With Kamala you're getting potentially 8yrs of insanity and lies and the same warmongering garbage as always. As a Black man, I'll do better under his administration.
I can't tell you who to vote for, but ultimately you'll have to vote for you... Which is also an option (write-in 😊).
No. I can't afford it.
Yes. It is too expensive for me both in terms of fiat and in terms of bifurcation of the user-initiated support from the rest of the support system. This is going to lock out people who want to DIY stuff, and will have very valuable experience to bring to the table, and the community will be poorer for the exclusion of those people.
So, yeah. It's too much. IMO. But, I don't make those decisions. I would never buy one of your servers, anyway, since the hardware is too limiting and I can't do anything else with it. I set up startOS on proxmox on a much more powerful tiny pc that I got used for not much more than one of your servers. I can run anything else on your servers. That's too limited. That being said, you need to generate revenue, so, maybe that's the correct decision. I just think that's a rather ostracizing, un-friendly move that may turn others away from trying your software before considering buying your hardware to run it. 🤷♂️
This makes me less likely to continue to use startOS or recommend it to others. But hey, you do you. 👍
Oh, I'm sure they will.
Telegram is a lot harder to manage and spam is rampant, so... I get it. But, that's still too much to ask IMO.

Also good. Totally different, though. 😁
Oof. That's a really steep price to buy in to the server.
I totally get moving away from telegram, though.
But $100? Yeesh.

Hot, soapy water.
Acetone is a good solvent. It is not a surfactant. It will move the heavy cutting oil around, but not remove it from the surface of the steel. It can make things worse in aluminum if the aluminum is not washed in hot soapy water first, then allowed to dry. (Aluminum is a sponge)
Yes! I'm fascinated by the recipes that @nprofile…hjv6 posts!
Thank you. It's a rather large weight off my mind.

I see someone commenting on it earlier today.
That is odd. For sure. Does anyone else have that issue?

I don't. I only see most people enstantiated into tribal teams and being manipulated more and more.
The system will break, and it will destroy most of the people that are involved in it.
Eh. I don't really have time for those. I know for a fact a few of them are just outright propaganda by linking at who funded them.
I know I'm not going to change your mind. I appreciate the discussion. I just don't think you're correct, fundamentally. That's cool. If you are truly healthy, good. Most Vegans I run across are sickly, dim people, or, in more cases, just fat. That's so wrong. LOL
Sure, sure but more are turning away from that. As am I. I also think that anything that comes from monoculture is bad, and that is only a recent human "invention." it will pass in time.
But, more to the point of this conversation, locally grown meat is better for everyone and everything than having everyone on the planet stay eating vegan all at once. We don't have enough arable land for that to do it in a sustainable manner, and to do it sustainably, animals must be integrated into those systems, so... I still see no reason to not eat meat.
Those inefficiencies are the system, and the system is doing what it is designed to do. It's not going to get much better for a while. IMO.
I just ordered a new cell phone.
Few understand the significance of this.
Heya! Steel covered in heavy cutting oil. It's disgusting.
No. Not all processes are progress. Some processes lead to death and destruction. Actually, many. There are very few processes that lead to growth.
Uh... No.
Cows don't kill the plants they eat, if they are left to graze. They trim down the leaves, but don't uproot the roots. In turn, their manure drops and provides food for various other creatures that increase the availability of nutrients for the grasses, which, in turn, grow healthier, which makes the cows healthier. It's an upward cycle of fertility and growth.
So, if that's what you think, I'm not sure what the rest of your assumptions are.
Awesome. I will add this to the list to fix in the next release.
Best would probably be, if it didn't return an error, as nothing actually went wrong and there is no further need to act. Like the info Cloudfodder returns here.
Just FYI.

Heya! It's already better. Thank you. ❤️
I'm not sure what you mean.
Yes, and you still don't have to give your attention to my situation as you have. I very much appreciate your experience and time.
Plants kill. Plants farm bacteria and harvest them for various nutrients. So... I'm not sure how this lines up with your viewpoint. Going 100% plenty based tends to kill more individual creatures than if I eat one cow a year. I do not see how this can be reconciled. It makes very little sense to me.
1. I can go to most orchards legally.
2. Most slaughterhouses (in the US) are awful. I would not go there.
3. If I ever have kids, they are going to learn to hunt and break down the game they kill. They will know where their food comes from.
Good morning.
That does take a lot of effort over time. It's harder to do with short time preferences.
How so? Everything will need to be resolved to the chain eventually. And, I'm really cheesed off by lightning and just find on chain easier at this point.
Also, what apps are you deleting?
Yes. Because the MIC is destroying other peoples' lives. So, it is of direct and great interest to people. This should not be the case.
Good morning!
What are we congratulating?
Congratulations! This is a huge milestone. I'm impressed with that you were able to squeeze outbox support in as well!
Good morning, even if you're a coffee addict. 😎
Good morning! Lovely view!

Thank you.
Who knows. I'm at the age for new, weird things to pop up. Maybe it is allergies. 😅
Without people like us, then nothing good would get done. Don't worry about it and keep doing that. It's ultimately good for nostr!
Gotcha. Yes. I'd agree with that.
Maybe, unless they kill off any interest in nostr from the world at large because it just doesn't work since they are in a death-spiral of pushing new features and ignoring previously terrible code.
But we're being gaslit that the decline is our fault and that there's nothing wrong and trying to grow a lively, interactive comminuty is being an attention whore. GTFO with that BS.
It does. Hugely. They don't realize how much money they are wasting on every job that comes into the shop. I've told them. It's not my problem at this point.
That is probably the case. I'll have to look more closely at it. Trying to make this video on the code base before I make more changes. Thank you for the report though! Keep em coming.

It comes from the machine shop. This company doesn't have a friggin clue about welding and why it's bad to leave parts covered in heavy, highly sulfured oil. I've literally been telling them about this issue for over a year.
But that's not how they are paying their bills. So... There's no motivation to do that. It's a legit conflict of interests and they refuse to acknowledge that it is so.
Yup. I will. It's not the end of the world. It just sucks for now. I'm sure it will happen again. 😅
Good morning, #nostriches!
I am starting off my day welding slimey steel. Again. 😮💨 🙄

What both of those do, is allow us to target our message at a specific audience or audiences, and concentrate those recipients in the same "digital room".
Says it could not connect to the database, but I think it might just be rejecting a duplicate upon broadcasting. You might want to return a more informative message, in that case.
On that note, @npub1zmc…7f60 your relay is throwing me an error.
One thing I've noticed, is that devs doing something more profound or innovative, quickly get frustrated by the lack of enthusiasm they receive upon announcing changes.
There are so many #devs, on here, that they don't realize that only a subset of that group is knowledgeable or experienced enough, to understand the significance of what they're publishing, and provide constructive feedback.
Try to find the "senior devs" and tag them, directly, in your announcement. If you can get them to respond they will often tag others, to come and take a look. Don't only tag the most well-known devs, tho, as everyone tags them and their notifications are flooded.
And don't expect that post to be popular. It is not in the nature of that post, to be "popular", as it is not aimed at the general populace.
Topical #relays and #communities are going to make this easier, but it's taking a while to get the clients done, so we'll have to actively hunt each other down, until then.
If you're writing something a bit high-brow or "unpopular" (in the literal sense, of requiring expertise of specialization to interpret) -- either because it's very academic or technical, or written in a more literary style -- don't feel bad, if you don't get many responses to it.
Your audience here, as everywhere, is a tiny subset of the overall population. Think more about targeting that audience with "discovery aids", like hashtags, or publishing to a relay where a lot of such people read, like devs.nostr1.com or theforest.nostr1.com.

Hmm... Pascal's wager, but applied to #economics .
If he's right, and rising government largess crowds out private enterprise and leads to deflation, then people are buying #gold as a hedge against worldwide economic collapse.
If he's wrong, and it leads to inflation, then people are buying gold as a hedge against monetary debasement.

Also, Amethyst's dev seems more Nostr-principled and he has some good people contributing to his repo.
They basically do work for Twitter, since they work for Jack.
Military for example. Self organized armies will on most occasions fail to defeat a centraly planned one. They lack the coordination made possible by centralization. The exception is when the Central authority makes a big mistake. Decentralized systems will make less mistakes over time.
All centralized systems fail in the long run because they have a central point of failure. They almost always outperform self organized ones in the short term. That doesn't make decentralized systems the best systems. Different systems for different reasons. Speech and money should be decentralized. They cannot fail. There are some tradeoffs that make central systems great for certain other applications.
Your claim is people are too dumb to make responsibe decisions. I think more highly of human beings. Humans are accountable for their actions. Making a stupid decision does not mean you are devoid of consequences.
Going live tomorrow Wednesday, on zap.stream with Eddie Goeke, a carnivore youtuber, at 9am Mexico City time (UTC-6) I will attempt to purple pill again. Wish me luck and hopefully you guys can zap him a bit so he can feel the nostrich love!

According to my dad fiatjaf, blossom is much better
I want to implement nip96 in go but it's kind of a big undertaking.

https://habla.news/u/silberengel@sovbit.host/1730184966317
It's difficult to "surface" content, on here, and becoming more so, as the content window narrows.
One of the main issues is the simple fact that you can't tell what other people are seeing, and you don't get feedback unless they actively respond with an event. People subscribing to your relay or following you, doesn't mean that they see anything you write. In fact, they probably don't see any of it, because you posted at the wrong hour of the day, they stopped using the relays you're on, their client has a bug or doesn't use outboxes, they muted you, they're looking at a special list or a DVM feed, etc.
So, if you have a large audience or a no audience (because your post didn't publish, for instance), the response you receive is the same: silence.
Did anyone see that? No idea. Probably not. Maybe.
People think it's weird, that I always mark the notes I've read with a "like", or something, but I know the unsettling weirdness of not-knowing if a message sent has been received.
You don't reduce suffering by ending life. Malthusian bullshit.
We loved on a world where people didn't have sex of they didn't want to get pregnant and if they did nearly 100% of people made do less than 100 years ago. But now it's impossible for us animals to suppress our desires. We're nothing but smart monekys with no personal responsibility for our actions. Makes sense when you look at the world in a way that makes that little sense.
Not sure how to argue with someone that doesn't see a difference between you and a fish. This is the best they got.

Do I really have to explain how humans are intrinsically different from all other animals?
Oh, yeah, I forgot about some of those. *shudder*
It would have to be finance/economics as a niche, to compare, I suppose. Bitcoin can be expanded, to cover those topics, in a much wider sense, but I think it's telling that we have attracted some real economic talent, and they just write about video games and food, and NGU.
They clearly don't think we have the brains to discuss anything else. Sort of embarrassing.
Oh, I've definitely noticed. I used to like to write about Bitcoin, sometimes, on Twitter, but it's been shoved down my throat so monotonously and hysterically, since I've been here, that I usually just scroll past Bitcoin-whatever stuff.
It's been much more interesting, discussing Bitcoin at meetups, as the discussions are more profound and philosophical, holistic or highly technical. I bet that depth of Bitcoin convo would be less off-putting for new arrivals, as it would mostly be academic, but the algorithmic pressure is clearly against it.
So your desire to have sex is more important than the life of an unborn human. That's your argument. It falls flat on its face.
Hard not to. Engineering feats are awesome
I hijacked this. So reposting to point out the question #asknostr #note1wrx…n68d
I think we sometimes also have to admit that anything aimed at the middle-audience will tend to be most-popular. That is, after all, what "popular" means: "intended for or suited to the taste, understanding, or means of the general public, rather than specialists or intellectuals".
Lyn isn't dropping her high-brow economics stuff, in here. She's just writing conversationally about video games and whatnot.
There are a lot of devs on here, so it gives us the impression that we're surrounded by our peers, but we're actually a tiny minority. Anything aimed at knowledgeable engineers, is niche, and won't attract wider attention.
That's the catch. Still cavemen, but have been cajoled into a society that's asked a lot more of them than comes naturally.
So it goes...
I think similar for women, just their mother instincts over take the sexual urges at some point and then then become far more serious because of that. Not a bad thing either, someone has to be serious....
I harbor nothing but contempt and vitriol for commies. They deserve worse.
I'm at that point now. You can't help but extend the offer of a life raft to your loved ones at least a few times.
What kind of job?
H job?
B job? Etc...

Are you really arguing that not having sex is a not a solution to not getting pregnant?
Yes, it's definitely communities.
To be honest, I suspect "better trending microblogging algos" would just slightly shift this effect to a different clump of users, rather than eliminating it. Rankings invariably lead to homogenization and blandness. Post things that trend. Don't post things that don't trend.
It's training humans, as if they were dogs (or smart-bots), and only those who are extremely centered can withstand that, over time. And those few will slide into irrelevance.
Communities allow people to stay human, and still be heard.
Has everyone already seen this?
It's the precise opposite configuration, as we're aiming for, with #Alexandria, but the chat-first interface is an interesting configuration for a kind-01-handling client. Been watching the videos. 🤔

Such as life indeed. So I try not to complain and instead focus on working more.
I've refuted all of your arguments. Then I insulted you for making stupid ones.
Your arguments are immoral, tired and weak. I will not apologize to weak malthusian useful idiots. In fact, my rhetoric isn't harsh enough if anything.
#nevent1q…08kn
An unborn child does have a right to life and they are entitled to the womb of the mother who made a choice to have sex. If they don't want a child, they can't simply not have sex. Pretty simple.
No it's not murder to prevent conception. Abortion pills should be banned, not birth control, abstention and condoms.
Should the state be involved in murder?
State control of reproduction? Who ever said that? The state isn't forcing anyone to have sex. I advocate that the nation I live in, enforce the right to life. Women need not "bear a pregnancy" if they aren't having sex by their own volition. It's not a personal decision to make a value assessment of the life the child COULD have. That's a ridiculous statement. Your entire supposition is deplorable. Trying to save face by saying I support nation states involvement in people personal lives is distracting from your argument by being so plainly dishonest. Yes. I support any entity who would advocate for children conceived to have their lives protected. The same way I support any entity to defend the lives of other people or bring justice to those who have been wronged. I don't care of it's the state. We need more people, not less. You're a sick malthusian useful idiot. I won't apologize.
Not it's on very insane hardware, but too many clients query it 10 times per second to make one fees
Just needs one query, if you're being rate limited then the client is reqing badly
That's a very long thread to justify abortion. It's a terrible argument. 2 wrongs don't make a right. Life begins at conception. It's immoral to take the life of someone else that has done no wrong to you. Especially one as innocent and defenseless as a child in the womb. It's that simple. I don't give a single shit about extenuating circumstances. They bear no consequence on the present issue that someone else's life is not yours to decide the fate of. But, but , but.... All just trying to justify your I'll conceived notion that abortion is some kind of healthcare. It's not. And no, a c section is not abortion. No, care for an ectopic pregnancy is not abortion and is not illegal in any state with limits on abortion.
Hell yes!!!! Is this live-streamed? What time is it at?
The irony. It hurts.

At any rate, that thread is a real Walk of Shame for Nostr.
Everyone new here, who is struggling with the same problems I am, while creating real content, just got that thread dumped in their feed, by the same Nostr Algo that has made those people so arrogantly and obnoxiously tone-deaf.
This is what happens, when there is no connection between effort and reward. People get lazy. People assume things will never change. People lose empathy for others. People assume everyone who criticizes the status quo is soft in the head.

But I gotta say, I post about grain from time to time, making a big robust relay implementation from scratch. Nearly no engagement usually. But when UTXO makes a 1 off specialized relay, it's the talk of the town for a few days.
Again, not that I don't love all the relay implementations. We need more. But it's a little demoralizing when I'm making the same thing but way more involved single project and it gets 1/100th of the reach.
Such curation is also how we can quickly get high-signal newbies a bigger audience.
Coracle is also more DVM than plain trending. Nostr.Band is off on a separate website, so it doesn't have a strong effect and is mostly looked at by Nostr statistic nerds, like me. Freerse doesn't have that many users.
It's mostly Primal, I think, but there are so many people using Primal, that it's skewed everyone else's feeds.
Long as you're focused, we're Gucc'd
Have a good day. Stay focused.
For comparison: https://nostrudel.ninja/#/r/wss%3A%2F%2Fnostrelites.org%2F
Wow, that's actually quite good, yes.

I GOT THE OFFER LFG!!! #note1hyq…5lf4
Likely not gonna work for me.
I think Damus is getting algos in the next version, but they aren't going to be the "normal" trending ones, as far as I know. More DVM-style, so that you can customize what you see. Like Amethyst has.
I don't think Damus has one. More Primal, Freerse, Coracle, Nostr.Band, etc.
Like this: https://primal.net/home
Let me go empty the cache and repull. Just had nostrelites subscribed and now my feed is a hot mess. 🙈
Wheat is a very small relay but is the feed good?
No.
I don't have a silly I-device.
No clue. Hence... My likely eternal relationship status. 😅
The WoT relays have surprisingly terrible global feeds. Much better than nos.lol global, of course, but I still have to look at them through following or etc. filter. Need more manual curation on the lower level, I think.
Follow lists aren't a good-enough measure for trust, in an environment where many/most npubs follow lots of npubs, but don't look at what they post. About as effective, as requiring a one-time fee to write (so, not very effective).
Manual curation of relay whitelists is still winning this round.
I don't mean to brag, but I've met at least 3 Dan's from Nostr. Some may think that this is how we win, one Dan at a time.
It's gross. Do not recommend.
It's not just buggier there. It's just buggy. Glad it's working again, but for how long? 🙄
I'm focusing on building my own clients, and reducing this Influencer Effect there.
That Pepsi cup looks like it has a huge straw!
Sometimes I wish I could get higher amounts of reactions and reposts for @nprofile…uy3d, but I remind myself that if I continue the work the results will come.
Then I'll think the same thing about the amount of Sats from zaps, but I remind myself that one day people will look back at the amounts I'm getting now, and think that's crazy how much Sats just a few individuals were willing to give away to support the project.
I've got to stay humble.
That's even cooler! I'm soldering.
#nevent1q…af4c
Some clients have lists that their system develops to show "trending" posts. Damus and primal (and I guess coracle, too) being the biggest proponents of that kind of thing.
That's actually quite clever. A bit like the original rotating-outbox model, but for npubs, instead of relays.
I've tried to do something similar, manually, by hunting down new npubs and boosting them into everyone's feed.
Yes, but I've never seen such an extreme distribution.
Most social media is better about helping people interact and discover on the lower-levels. There's more concern with helping new users find normal people to talk to, and less funneling of everyone into an audience for a tiny minority of celebrity accounts.
Also, it's incredibly off-putting, to new users, to give them onboarding instructions like:
1) Follow lots of people and some might follow you back.
2) Post "GM" every morning.
3) Write about Bitcoin.
4) Post "GN" every night.
5) Blast your notes to all active relays.
6) Respond to the notes at the top of the trending list.
7) Hang out around Jack and Odell.
8) Use more hashtags.
This is a highly unnatural way to interact. That's why it's ironic, that we're so proud of "having no algos". What is that list, if not an algo? People quickly developed a manual algo, to make up for the lack of a digital one, is all.
I'm curious as to what other people think of this.
Evidently, I'm an oddity in that several of my notes seem to end up on the trending lists, and I have no clue why. So, my experience using nostr seems to be out of the ordinary.
🤷♂️

I only started seeing it, today, but I don't know if it might not have been introduced earlier. Saw it three times, today.
I mean, I'd go just to find I out.

FAIR BUT ALSO OPEN SOURCE ELECTRONIC MACHINES WITH A PAPER RECEIPT YOU MANUALLY DROP IN AN AUDIT BOX IS A FINE COMPROMISE.
We'll see. Just get tired of people claiming I'm just desperate for attention.
If I just wanted more attention, I'd write from my npub that is 10x bigger.

Dang. Can you use a piece of plywood under the legs to move it around?
IT IS INSANE THAT VOTING MACHINES ARE NOT OPEN SOURCE.
I know that you're trying to fix it.
I'm trying to point out that it's a problem that needs to be fixed. Most people with a wide reach are not willing to admit that it's a problem because they're benefitting from the imbalance. They do not want this to change and respond to complaints with ridicule, but people are leaving over this.
And no amount of new relay will help, if everyone is stuck looking at Band, LOL, Primal, and Damus because the clients don't get relay management right or purposefully tie users to their own relay.

I don't.
I'm really not cool with them making Terminators.
I'm not a fan of tactical peanut butter, but your spray job is impeccable!
My money's on the BD bot 😳
That's where a lot of the really grossest stuff I ever saw on nostr came from. Glad I don't need to set any of that anymore.
Oh, right. Maybe they went there.
For the record, @npub1utx…50e8 currently has 9 posts trending on nostr.band. Yes, nine. N-I-N-E.

Look at that list. Same people over and over. Tell me that there isn't something seriously fucked up about Kind 01 feeds.

Good.
I'm closer to better self custody.
That's good. You know.
I just have my goals and I'll learn a ton along the way. 😁
I wonder where all of the rapey guys and the other perverts left to. 🤔 Fediverse?
Are the still on nos.lol and Damus?
I use NAK from within my PHP CLIs and my desktop app in PyQt, by calling shell commands.
NAK is like a superpower.
I have write-limited relays in my inbox list. It was the only thing that made Nostr bearable.
You had to be there. Be glad you weren't there.
I just want to get my chat on.
Most people can't see my stuff, unless they follow me, even if they subscribe to my relay. 🤷🏻♀️
They all follow each other. Follow circle-jerk. 😂
I think I'm up to 8 accounts, now. 🤔
None of them are. And I never look at "following" feed, anyway. And, yet, I see all of your posts. I am one of the few who can perform this trick.

That's why they're focusing on building cars in china
And the KYC, and the lack of relay management. And no Amber sign-in or outboxes.
Yup. Sure. But, I need to learn this so I can do other stuff in the future. Being able to run nodes and relays is kind of a side bonus.
The dumb thing is that I low-key hate all of it. 😅
You're welcome. I'm a huge fan of good acapella and dabbled in covert recording in my younger years. I have a relative that is an audio engineer. I know enough to know how much work went into getting that recorded as well as you did.
It means that many people (the relay subscribers, including myself) don't have to follow you, to see your posts. It has more impact, than a follow.
I can see you, even if I don't follow you.
It hardly ever works, the other way around.
I am posting from the future.
There are hardly any NIPs about relays. Every client dev just does whatever.
I said yes, because I know it works on Amethyst, but it's often buggy, elsewhere, or the client hasn't implemented outboxes.
I'm on Nostrudel, but I'll try again.
Nobody does. That's the problem.
Relay devs are having to fix client bugs, by pulling the controller into the relay.
Also, their cache relay stuff.

Unsolicited opinion, but I love seeing critiques of nostr clients — from new users and old ones. It’s how any of the clients have even gotten to be as functional as they are today. There’s also plenty of room for improvement, in various directions depending on the intended use case for the individual client. New users can offer a fresh set of eyes when some of us have gotten used to the quirks that create friction. (Sure, there’s also the trope of “I’m new to ___ and I’m here to fix it” which isn’t particularly helpful, but my sense is that this isn’t want you’re referring to).
I haven’t seen so much of this “shutting down” of people who voice their criticisms, but it’s disappointing to hear that there’s enough of it to turn people off.
I’ve had a great experience over the past couple of years here, watching how quickly the protocol and clients have grown into a robust information system (social uses included), and seeing the content expand far beyond the mainly-Bitcoin discussion of the earliest adopters. (I enjoy the Bitcoin content as well — and it’s usually of a much higher caliber here than on Twitter or Reddit — but I want/need a lot more than that to have a fulfilling social experience, and for nostr to continue growing).
Some protocol limitations exist, sure, but doesn’t mean a client can’t be built to deliver a certain type of experience, if that’s what the developer wants. Couple that with the fact that nearly everything is open source, if someone wants to change/improve a feature they can submit a PR or clone the entire thing and build it a different way. That’s powerful, especially compared to the closed silo/walled garden ecosystem we’ve all experienced up until now.
I’ve seen the devs behind social clients like @npub1pu3…tfch , @npub18m7…q955, @npub142g…xrj0, Coracle (why no tag suggestion?), and @npub1n0s…k6h0 all being very receptive to constructive criticism.
I’d be willing to bet that the individuals who shut down your criticism are missing the point — we’re all trying to make this thing work, and win, and it’s early enough that things can break and be rebuilt without significant disruption. My experience of critique/user feedback, both personally and seeing it on my feed, has been that the devs actually building the projects are pretty open to/appreciative of it (as opposed to the accounts who might just jump into a thread to tell someone to f’ off for complaining, because the internet simply does have trolls).
But I’d never block someone for voicing technical/UX feedback about their client. That’s worthy of a repost and attempt to replicate the issue and fix it. My two sats ⚡️🤝
Breaking all records. 😂
But that's more than most, I assume.

Fold has never returned my emails and they won't accept me as a customer. I don't know why. I've tried for years.
I have very little interest in having dollars at all. I have 99.9% of my life in bitcoin. It would be great to be able to pay for everything with bitcoin.
Just trying to maximize my bitcoin standard living.
Yeah, tried that. Since some popular clients couldn't find my notes, I had to give up and add more and more outbox relays.
Upon further investigation, insta carting is the way to get to the stores i need products for.
#nevent1q…enzp
I've been learning soldering as well! I hope it's going well!
A guy I recently met in my area has a large machine for cutting metal. I made the design. It's a vector that he was able to use to program the machine to cut it out like that! It's a pretty incredible machine.
Yeah, client devs and long-time users think the problems are with the protocol itself, and/or that it isn't humanly possible to build a Nostr client that actually works.
People who don't understand software development believe them and repeat their nonsense.
I guess i could insta cart for groceries
I've only used bitrefill.
I get the Chevron gift cards from there. And top golf.
I use them often. But they don't have all the ones I need

I've had it before. It's a real pain sometimes. Prob worth exploring again though. I had it before nostr for VPN Netflix in Mexico purposes. I don't Netflix anymore though.
Bitcoin standard rant,
All I have left to figure out is paying my rent, bills, and groceries with bitcoin.
I know I can get a Walmart gift card but I hate Walmart.
Ideally, Costco and Publix gift cards.
I should really reach out to my local beef butcher as an alternative to buying beef from Costco.
Bills and rent are the trickier ones to tackle.
Im sure there is a work around somehow.
Getting gas with the Chevron/Texaco app and gift cards has been great so far though.
Are there any ways to pay your bills with bitcoin?
#asknostr
Meh, it's just people trying to deflect attention from bad product quality.
It's an old rhetorical trick, where you expand the scope of the argument to such a degree, that it becomes impossible to solve. A form of argumentum ad absurdum.
