I took an A Level in Computer Science in 1977 in the UK. As part of the course we looked at the Eliza program and its code. People thought THAT program could think even though it only had a dozen responses. Today's chatbots have the appearance of thinking, but they are, at core, just versions of Eliza with millions of possible responses.

@nprofile…5plc There are lots of varieties of bread, hence the recipe variation, everyone seems to have their favourite combination of ingredients. I made a lot of bread in lockdown and found it could differ from loaf to loaf even when following the same recipe because of things like ambient kitchen temperature and so on. The other thing to consider, is that New Zealand flour doesn’t always work the same as overseas flour, so aim for a locally written recipe at first.

At bottom, Windows 8 was high maintenance, bug ridden, crash prone and came with other nasty surprises that got in the way of work. The UI was poor and confusing... at one point it would switch between Metro Mode and something else almost at random. It began to feel as if maintaining my (and the family's) Windows laptops was my main job and earning an income was secondary.

At the time my income took off because overnight I was massively more productive. We're not talking about a small improvement, it was huge, I was able to earn almost twice as much.
@nprofile…s06p @nprofile…p3jt For almost a decade I've been saying that anyone at Microsoft who has a clue now works in the company's cloud and enterprise business, it's as if the company has lost interest in Windows and Office and now only sees them as a sales funnel for the cloud and enterprise division.
@nprofile…s06p @nprofile…p3jt The weird thing about that one is that Windows Phone 8 was better than Android when it first appeared. Yeah, I know it came with all the other Microsoft baggage, but for getting things done on a phone, the first iteration was out in front, although there was tumble weed blowing through the App Store. Then MS did what it always does and made it unnecessarily more complicated with WP 8.1, screwed a few app developers and Android looked good again.

@nprofile…s06p @nprofile…p3jt At the last count Linux is 4 percent of the worldwide market. Windows is 72 percent. A decade ago Windows was in the 90s and Linux was 1.6 percent. On current trends Linux will pass Windows around the time the global temperate rises another 2C. :)

It almost worked, back then it wasn't great for fixing up HTML problems on web pages or managing remote files - both tasks might be better now there are more tools. If I was working full time on a newspaper again, I definitely go that route.

That's bad, but many ads are awful to watch and they are constantly repeated. There might be four repetitions of the same ad in an hour of TV. It's even worse in cricket with ads between each over, sometimes spilling into the playing time.
