You've got a task that you know you need to do. You set up some external reminders, etc. to do them. But even though I can remember to do something via these reminders, I'm resentful about having to do it.
I can't really pin down the cause of this resentment. Is it something about being externally reminded? Is it the task itself (journaling, which admittedly I've never enjoyed)?

I don't feel great about the prospects of any creative industry, maybe any industry, in 10 years. I can't help but feel the people who do it out of love are beaten down and exploited and the only ones left who have the energy to care are the ones who only care about their own greed.
Anyways, still haven't fully given up on traditional publishing. For some reason.

Hey, #WritingCommunity, what do you think of the genre "magical realism", especially its usage outside of its Central American roots?
IMO, it feels like a dilution of the term to use it for fiction that isn't either part of that tradition or at the very least use absurdism/the supernatural as a social critique. But on the other hand there seems to be a gap for that sort of "one magical thing, everything else realistic" in our genre lexicon.
What would you call that?

I've had the most luck swapping manuscript for manuscript. The reciprocity lessens the odds of people flaking out. Also having your beta reader be your target audience is important too, and writing a book you're interested in reading tends to be a good proxy for that. There's a google group called critique partner swap where I found my people.
I've also tried to get things going on here via @npub1a3s…xk4e but no luck lol. Even when I was just offering to read stuff for nothing in return! I promise I'm both very nice and very good at feedback. Anyways anyone wanna swap stories with me? 6k words, scifi, biodiversity, nanomachines, eat the rich.

Hey writing friends, I've noticed that I have a bunch of newer favorite books with just... really weak sequels. Like beautiful, lightning first books and the extremely meh seconds and thirds. This is definitely a direct outcome of "publishers are more likely to buy trilogies" and the fact they make you write each book in like, a year after the first one, right? My short story got longlisted by space cat press. Apparently my prize is an appearance on a list in a newsletter lmao.

@npub1kkp…5sfx That's the feeling I get too. Like, classic horror will take you through uncanny as it builds up to the big scare.
I have noticed a thing in internet uncanny fiction (backrooms, some early slenderman stuff) where they have trouble ending the story. Makes sense though, since uncanny has so much in ambiguity, and ending in ambiguity feels weird. Maybe...uncanny? :D
