Just saw a post about Jira and I know that this sort of response isn't a an appropriate way to derail that thread, but y'all are on my feed, so you get my intrusive thoughts piped directly into your magic glass.
You don't need to use Jira. There is another way. It's called Linear.
I cannot promise that it'll match all the corners of your tortured workflows and integrations. And there is no ticketing tool which will free you from the burden of actually having to communicate with your colleagues and make decisions about your plans.
But Linear is simply better than Jira. It's as though Jira had been developed by people who are actually trying to make pleasant software which doesn't suck to use. It's such a neat tool that I even use it for personal projects. Go forth, be free, drop Jira!

@npub1wml…37pd You're absolutely right that criminal prosecution is and has been a bullshit manipulation of power rather than a pursuit of justice, and that the criminal prosecution system with charge stacking and plea bargains makes a mockery of the presumption of innocence. But I was under the impression that criminal defense was at least fairly predictably unjust and inequitable? I think the sensation I'm trying to capture here is lawyers who have built up The Law in their minds as a noble edifice of justice, and one with interesting details and quirks that they love exploring… but then suddenly seeing this sea change of judges who don't care about that perspective at all and just unabashedly impose their political will?

Conservative politics are not — as conservatives sometimes want to suggest — about order & caution, adopting change systematically and thoughtfully. Conservatism is a bait and switch. It synthesizes an imagined past out of whole cloth, then claims that we in our hubris are drifting too far from that fantasy.
The conservative agenda is a radical transformation of society into something it has never been while pretending that future is grounded in history. It is not just a rejection of diversity & inclusion, of creativity and human flourishing, but also of the arrow of time and our understanding of where we came from.
Modern conservatives have more in common with Stalin's totalitarianism than modern leftists have in common with Soviet attempts at communism. Stalin's revolution was a redefinition of history in order to control memory & society, while ejecting all those who do not fit the mold. Modern socialists simply want everyone to have what they need to live a fulfilled life with minimal suffering. Which sounds like the story conservatism tries to tell about stability & safety. Except that conservatism has never wanted to provide for everyone: it relies on deprivation and suffering as a constant threat to keep us in line.
Don't fall for it. The conservative fantasy has always been an ahistorical soft tyrrany. A better world is possible, and has existed many times before, in many places filled with people who look and think and love like you do.

I love reading ancient cuneiform tablets. Classics such as "Fuck you, this copper sucks." Good news, everyone: I have successfully replaced my voicemail with an LLM-powered voice chatbot which has been instructed to (1) act like I'm in the middle of some practical & noisy task, (2) have trouble hearing the caller, and (3) try to get the caller to text me instead, ideally via Signal. Hopefully, this will free me from the need to answer the phone ever again, or even listen to voicemail messages. And all it took was being willing to fire up three (3) coal-fired power plants whenever the robot answers the phone!

You can tell that Deep Space Nine is dark & gritty Star Trek out on the boundaries of the Federation's control where imperfect people have to make imperfect choices in imperfect situations. It's because they don't have a conference room. The conference room is the beating heart of a Starfleet crew. Look, I'm all for bodily autonomy. Trans rights are human rights and all that. But I think that your right to gender-affirming support ends when it harms your community. And these modern trucks are more dangerous than basically any other vehicles on public roads. The massive raised hoods almost guarantee that any pedestrian they hit will be thrown under the wheels. And by the same token they make the sightlines on these vehicles impossible. I'm 5'11" and I can stand in front of some modern trucks and be invisible to the driver. I just think that we should place some common-sense restrictions on how dangerous a vehicle can be to the people around it — regardless of how empowering and affirming it is to the driver.

@npub1q2u…tv7q It sure as heck is not! But unfortunately, as you may be aware, the TSA. I still think that traveling with a firearm part can be a great move to somewhat reduce risk of loss and make sure that nobody one baggage inspector has unsupervised access to your bag — especially alongside valuable or hard-to-replace gear.
But it can also be incrementally expensive. I would not (just for a random example) try to secure a case containing a firearm using a Master so-called lock. I'd want to use an actual lock, and the price of having those frequently cut can add up, even if you use fancy replaceable shackles so that you're not wasting the lock body every time.
The US just has so many rough edges where public systems are total nonsense or degraded beyond belief. And that's where there's still public infrastructure at all, which is more and more just cops and other systems of control.

💉 Shots 👏🏻 in 👏🏻 arms!
Went back to the location of my original appointment right when the pharmacy opened at ten. Some of the staff recognized me from yesterday, and the pharmacist took one look at my appointment printout before promising that he'd give me the shots today — he just needed to work out how to outsmart the computer to do it.
The pharmacy was utter chaos while I was waiting: phones ringing off the hook, more customers than the staff could handle, more vaccine appointment errors that they had to fix in order to be allowed to actually give people their shots. Listening to the staff talking behind the counter, it seems like they really aren't getting support from the company — a bunch of them haven't even been paid properly for the last month.
It's now eleven and I'm $250 poorer, but have both flu and Covid shots in my body. 🦾 Sucks to be uninsured, but I'm grateful to have the spare cash to be able to reduce my risk of long Covid or worsening chronic fatigue.

The child tax credit cut child poverty in half in the US. As soon as it expired, child poverty went right back where it was. Poverty is a choice — a policy choice. We could end most poverty today by just giving people money — that's exactly what the child tax credit did.
Not all poverty can be directly solved with cash payments, but most poverty can. Far and away the number one cause of poverty is not having enough money. And when someone has other problems too, money makes those other challenges easier to face.
For decades — in fact most of a century since the early forays into a welfare state — our society has had the means to almost completely abolish poverty and deprivation. We just… keep deciding not to. The example of the child tax credit shows just how easily and quickly cash payments can end poverty. That choice continues to be available, and the implementation is so straightforward.
The number one cause of poverty is not having enough money. When we give people money, they stop being poor. We have the money, and we have the means to give it out.
