You're absolutely right that criminal prosecution is and has been a bullshit manipulation of power rather than a pursuit of justice, and that the criminal prosecution system with charge stacking and plea bargains makes a mockery of the presumption of innocence. But I was under the impression that criminal defense was at least fairly predictably unjust and inequitable? I think the sensation I'm trying to capture here is lawyers who have built up The Law in their minds as a noble edifice of justice, and one with interesting details and quirks that they love exploring… but then suddenly seeing this sea change of judges who don't care about that perspective at all and just unabashedly impose their political will?
