Got back from a long trip in our EV, and the charging infrastructure for non-Tesla EV's is absolute shit. Of all the charging (7 or so times), there was only one time I'd consider successful, and that is pulling up, it working and getting full speed.
It doesn't help when the VW infotainment system says an EA charging station is available, but it hasn't even been finished installing (EA's app properly shows it's unavailable).

@npub1yck…ujmw it's a GitHub specific issue, not git. It's how they store git repos. When you fork a repo on GitHub, you don't get your own git repo, you get your own private namespace in a unified git repo, so you have access to all the commits (hashes) that all forks have committed.

I reported a similar issue years ago.
Because GitHub has a unified repo for forked repos, you could fork a repo, commit code. Then you could submit an update to a code based that uses the form as a submodule and make it appear as if your code was part of the official repo.
GitHub's response was a minor UI improvement.
Not surprised this happened.

Tesla still hasn't opened up their super chargers. Until you can buy a third party adapter, and w/o interference between Tesla and your car manufacturer charge your car, the super charger network is NOT open.

Question for people who have purchased a level 2 charger for home, is there any real difference between the different manufacturers? Because it's just a bit of electronics to negotiate the current, and a contactor to connect/disconnect the AC.

Interesting how usb-c pd 2.x+ dropped 12v and adding 9v and 15v.
And crazy you can do lead acid charging doing constant current (bulk charge) and constant voltage (float) with revision 3.0. though you'd be limited by the current supported over the cables.

One habit I need to get out of is logging out of accounts when they have their own browser container. For decades I'd make sure I'd log out of accounts to help prevent XSS attacks, but w/ containers that is/shouldn't be a problem as that container is only used for that specific site.

The whole S3 charging for unauthorized/denied accesses to #S3 shows exactly the culture of #Amazon . Just because they reversed this policy (TBD if they actually do) doesn't mean that other similar policies will be changed. That the support person couldn't raise concerns, that the middle managers didn't care enough about the customers to realize how bad/stupid/damaging it is.

One of the best things I learned a few years ago, was that you can checkout a projects "home page" from github. That is:

Universal usb-c charging is nice. Last night, my laptop wasn't plugged in to charge, and so it was low this morning, and I wanted to use it in bed a bit. Luckily I could just use the charger that I use with my phone to charge the laptop. Didn't have to move or panic or anything.

A few years ago I realized that more companies need to let engineers have some money to contribute to OSS. Say a percent or two of their salary that they can give to free software that is used by the company.
This would help fund software, help get rid of the bureaucracy (don't have to justify it, etc), and put the money where it's likely most needed.
They likely know which projects are under funded or critical to the company.

But recently I started taking a probiotic and it cleared up some of the inflammation/fatigue I've been having. Two things I'd like to see added to #ZFS is, first an API for allowing programs to control trasactions on files, that is, "freeze" a file, allow arbitrary writes to the file, and then commit all the writes at once. This would allow DB's and others to not add their own logging layer.

Simple case for 4k discs, you can actually seek with them. The seeking experience, even with gig fiber is terrible.
Netflix via PS3 isn't terrible, but not great. Amazon Prime via Chromecast is absolutely terrible.
So yes, I'll be buying a few 4k discs (already have), because the experience is so much better than the standard streaming services.

So much this. Proper secure example of GTFO. Any software that has insecure examples doesn't take security seriously and needs to be replaced.
And yes, this includes examples that use http and not https. It's one command to generate a self signed cert, and then it's an [relatively] easy step to replace the self signed cert with a proper cert.

If we want to get off oil/gas, we need a law that requires that landlords must install a level 2 charger in a renter's parking spot if there's off street parking. And it either MUST be free electricity or hooked into the unit's meter (second meter would work as well, but much more expensive). And the landlord cannot deny renting based upon them driving an EV.
Best is better public transit, but that won't happen quickly enough compared to evs.

I haven't tested restore, but I've been doing tm over NFS or sshfs (fuse). Also, it looks like you can do a clean install and use the migration assistant to do a restore from the TM volume. I used that to migrate from my old x86 laptop to the M1.

One of the best reasons to use #ZFS snapshots on my time machine backup is that once every couple years, Apple corrupts it. So I can go back to a previous snapshot where it was good, and use that. Just recovered my backup this way. Once it's done, I'll need to do the promote and rename to replace the old, corrupted backup.

Today, whole taking a shower, I wonder why drain water heat recovery isn't more common. For places like California where natural gas heating is common, it's a good way to reduce your burning of fossil fuels. Not sure how much of an impact it'll make on the newer heat pump hot water heaters.

Really wish there was an easy and user visible way to see why my display keeps dropping out. Is it because the cable is bad or something? Who knows, all I know is that sometimes it comes back after a few seconds, other times it comes back after I unplug and replug it back in.

@npub1yck…ujmw are you saying that thunderbolt spec requires accurate markings on the cable? I'm seeing cables w/ markings, but they don't look standardize/mandatory. They look like some engineer decided hey, lets put the version number on it, picked a random font, and put a 3 or a 4 on the cable.

@npub1yck…ujmw I thought that windows 7 or 8 had this feature that would pop up a little dialog telling users that things were slow, but I guess maybe they got rid of it because there's enough shit products like terrible USB thumb drives that talk USB 3.0 5Gbps, but their flash chips still run at 10MB/sec, so running faster than USB 2.0 doesn't make any sense.

Even modern computers won't tell you, hey, idiot, something between your computer and your device isn't usb 3 compatible, might want to change it. And w/ how much smarts are required for each component in the chain, it wouldn't actually be that hard to have added the ability to pinpoint the "broken" component.

You should not be allowed to sell USB-C cables that aren't USB 3.0 (5Gbps) capable w/o VERY clearly labeling as such in the title AND on the actual cable.
I bought a USB-C "charger cable" made by Anker, and burried in the specs is: Data Transfer: USB 2.0, 480 Mbps, but no where on the cable is it so labeled.

I experienced this first hand. We had an appliance that would work fine for months then get packet loss but a reboot "fixed" it.
Problem was someone set the appliance for 100mbit full, disabling autoneg, despite switch using autoneg. The driver had a bug where it wouldn't reinit the phy after setting the mode, so it's stay in autoneg mode till link down (switch got rebooted) and then the phy would be 100 full, but switch would be half as the card didn't autoneg.

Email is broken is so many ways. servers intentionally ignoring 400 temporary errors, and treating them as 500 errors. 500 errors not being raised to the user because it's some automated system that's fire and forget. Yet, it's works the best since it's a common protocol that almost everyone implements, instead of the mess that is all the other communications protocols.

@npub1yck…ujmw This is because of the AC-4 decoding. ATSC 1.0 uses AC-3 which is/was widely available.
I'm not sure why SiliconDust is using cloud to decode AC-4, but I have a feeling it may have to do with patents (that it was easier to license patents for the few servers, than all the apps that they provide for free, when most users won't even use the feature).

One of the issues w/ #IPv6 is that it isn't monitored/maintained nearly as well as IPv4.
I've been having connectivity issues the last few days, and pretty sure it's down to spotty IPv6.
Of course people are going to disable IPv6 if the quality of their internet is worse than on IPv4 only.

It does have a JSON export option, which is good and makes it more usable.

So, trying to extract information from [Canon] RAW files, and of course none of the open source libraries actually extract most/all of the information in them.
ImageMagick (via wand-py) doesn't, dcraw doesn't, libraw doesn't (or at least not by default and no obvious way to get the rest out).
I may have to pull out my old python code I wrote like 15 years ago and update it.

Reason I asked is that my personal experience says no. When I worked in the office, I'd get sick at least once a year. When I started wfh, I stopped getting sick, despite having a child start elementary school the time I started wfh.

Just realized the one thing that C23 SHOULD have added was a directive to turn off all optimizations for a block of code, or at least disable most of the liveliness checks/dead code elimination, etc.
You cannot write [guaranteed] constant time code in C w/ how the standard is written.

Need the p there to prevent confusion with nvme1p1 and nvme11.
The use of letters to enumerate disk devices on Linux always drove me nuts (lol, tried to avoid using number, but just ended up using a variation).
