Bugger! I like my discount of course, but I also agree that some of us need it a lot less than students & some others. For a start, a lot of people over 60 are still working. If a “senior” has a good/excellent income from work or super, they probably don’t need a discount in public transport.

Awww, so cute. Glad you don’t accidentally hurt him.
I had long hair as a child, but shoulder length is as long as it’s been since then & it drove me nuts. And if it’s tied up all of the time, what’s the point. But I do like that her hair was grey. Grey hair is much kinder to our faces I think, although playing with hair colour can be fun.

I’m aware that the increased visibility & awareness of trans women makes me, a tall woman with a good sized schnoz, even more vulnerable to people with narrow ideas about femininity. And you know whose fault that is? It’s the fault of people who are ignorant, judgemental, narrow minded &/or hateful, & no one else’s, least of all yours.

People used to come into the post office and pinch the forms used to submit a telegram for transmission. I reckon most of the rude ones were written on these forms, rather than transmitted.

I’m guessing that they work like accents in other languages, to direct pronunciation. Either way, they weren’t available on our keyboards!
I became some somewhat familiar with the spelling, making it less likely to make a mistake, and more likely to notice if I did make one.

I didn’t have to worry about tones thank goodness! But lots of telegrams were sent from offices with high local populations of Vietnamese migrants. They were clearly a crucial form of communication.

I once typed up a telegram of support going to Lindy Chamberlain when she was in jail.
Telegrams in Vietnamese were the most challenging. We were supposed to type “”CCL PLS MSK” if we had an error, & start again. Conscientious me did of course, but I’d hate to know how many were sent with typos in them.

Telegrams were almost a thing of the past when I worked for Australia Post in the 1980s, but limped along until the internet took off. Even ephemera like telegrams are more likely to be archived than digital communications. So much will be lost by current generations.

I wonder how many diagnosed women start on a path of self realisation of their autism at peri-menopause. I’m guessing that most are unintentionally gaslit into thinking they’re “just” menopausal, depressed, anxious or otherwise “neurotic”.

When partner & I went a few years back, (a very long geology lesson), we also visited the East McDonnells. Less dramatic than the west, but eerily beautiful. My other 7 trips were all school camps.

This is at Kata Tjuṯa (formerly The Olga’s), in Central Australia, 40km west of Uluṟu. Unlike Uluṟu, which is a monolith (and most of it is underground, like an iceberg), Kata Tjuṯa is formed of domes of conglomerate rock, masses of various sized pebbles & stones, naturally cemented into larger rocks or domes. It’s a beautiful place. My favourite sites in Central Australia (that I’ve seen) in order of preference, Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park), Kata Tjuṯa, Ormiston Gorge, Uluṟu, Stanley Chasm. There’s lots more that’s also worth seeing. You’ll notice that Uluṟu is not at the top of my list. It’s probably the best known, but it’s not my favourite. If you go to Central Australia & the only geological sites you see are Uluṟu, Stanley chasm & Simpson’s Gap, you’re missing out big time. For you @npub1ef7…7n3q #GeologicalWonders

Yes. That’s because men’s work is valued differently to “women’s” work. Work that is directly linked to profit is more highly paid than work seen as “caring”, with the exception of doctors, still a male dominated profession. (So naturally it must be more important & deserving of higher pay.” It’s not the social value of labour that is recognised & paid accordingly, but the direct economic value. Teaching is valued more highly when it involves older students & less “ caring”. Swapping from “childcare” to “early childhood education” is one way of justifying pay increases for workers, because childcare as such isn’t valued.
“Equal pay for equal work” doesn’t work when the value of some work isn’t recognised. Obviously some occupations require more & more expensive qualifications, or are more demanding or risky, & should be paid accordingly. But even the ways we determine these things is biased. Working with children is demanding, challenging & exhausting, as all parents, teachers & anyone else who works with children knows, but because it’s “natural” for women to work with children (????)….

Back was better thank goodness. Had a lovely day, and my sister cried twice, which is a good sign! Little kids were great, cats were good for a while until it got too busy when they retired to sanctuary, but have fully recovered. Too much food of course, including lots of cake! I didn’t even know that deer were protected in Victoria. Why? Those that have escaped from farms are doing awful damage to our thin soils & flora. If people want to hunt deer, they can go where the deer are indigenous & it is legal to hunt them. They are beautiful animals, but they don’t belong here.

I have a friend who sings, & partner plays guitar. Twice friends have caught Covid when going to sing them perform in a bar, but my friend still hadn’t caught it. Generally careful, but she didn’t mask travelling around UK for 6 weeks & still didn’t catch it. I got masks & a portable HEPA filter for our trip.

I used to use the stairs in the Menzies building at Monash Clayton for exercise, but I really don’t like stairs. Occasionally my depth perception plays up & I have to recalibrate before continuing so that I don’t fall.

I think many families have their strong/smart types who are there when things go wrong, & the ones who always seem to need some help. Some help is fine, but lessons need to be learned & boundaries drawn. Knowing where to draw those boundaries is the hard part. Some people will need more help than others, sometimes for good reason.

I remember hearing my mother talk about how some parents were sending their kids to the homes of other infected kids to get it over with. I’m pretty sure mum didn’t approve, but sister & I got it anyway. We shared a room, & were always going to share illnesses, although I think I had measles before she was born or while she was a baby.

I was there at Easter, a few Spring tourists. It was busy at the palaces, but no waiting or crowds. Touristy but nice. The sad thing was the number of abandoned houses, once large homes of well off people.

I used to work at Aus Post years ago. I’m guessing the delivery method would be the same, regardless of which office you now & used to collect mail from. It sounds like maybe they had a shortage of drivers & decided not to bother trying to deliver, except for the one that got through. Whatever the reason, not good enough & never ok to tell porkies.
I agree re complaints. The higher ups don’t necessarily know there’s an issue otherwise.

As critical as I feel of the Labor government, a lot of the current mess is the fault of voters. Labor watered down their policies after the 2019 loss, & have continued to compromise to keep people in the middle onside, only to lose people from the left. If more voters thought big picture & long term, we wouldn’t end up with shit governments.

I’ve always felt for people who experience of any type, but I was surprised & disappointed to hear of the casual racism experienced by colleagues in shops etc. These were lovely, professional people, warm & friendly, competent at their job, which was to teach & support students in ours schools. (Not that respect shouldn’t be shown towards everyone, regardless of their employment status etc.)

My MIL used to get so frustrated when FIL wouldn’t wear/switch on his hearing aids. He’s much better now, and she’s the one we have to nag to wear her new hearing aids. 😩😂

Oh dear, bit of a test for the old pelvic floor! I had a student who had a nasty cough at the start I the school year, & it turned out to be whooping cough. I got vaxxed when my first grand niece was born, niece’s orders, so will need a booster when grand niece turns 10.

We’re currently looking at holiday accommodation in Spain. There seems to be an enormous number of 1 bedroom studio apartments, probably built for tourism & not necessarily suitable for permanent accommodation. We’re more than happy to book cheap & cheerful 3 star hotels, & will do so when possible, on principle. Limiting our stay in busy Barcelona, partly due to costs, but also crowds. Part of the problem is tourists with limited time who cram into tourist hotspots, neglecting the rest of the country.

Just saw an interesting post by someone missing the simplicity of their childhood. I know that most people wear rose coloured glasses when they’re feeling nostalgic, but I wonder how many autistic people read such posts & think, “No way!”?
I had lots of fun & interesting times during my childhood & adolescence, but there was also so much complexity, confusion & distress. Learning to mask made it easier. I could at least pretend to understand what was going on & therefore attract less negative attention.
